The reference and lending library is housed in a modern
five-storey building with capacity for 600 readers. There are 48
full-time staff. All books, periodicals and other materials in the
collection are available for use in the library and most may be
borrowed. Copying facilities are available at reasonable costs.
The major purpose of the library is to supplement and support
formal course instruction and to provide ample opportunity for
recreational and general reading.
In 1984 the collection comprised 230,810 items. In addition,
3,134 periodical titles are received, including a wide range of
indexes and abstracts. There is a rapidly growing collection of
audio-visual material, including records, audio and videotapes,
slides and films.
Library staff work in close association with teaching staff in
developing these resources, and in helping the students by
introducing them to a diversified collection of literature and a
wide range of media on all types of subjects. Formal and
informal instruction is given to students on the use of
catalogues, reference works and bibliographical aids both in
direct connection with the~r courses, and also in relating their
specialist courses to society as a whole. Reciprocal borrowing
facilities at other tertiary educational institutions have been
arranged to increase the resources available to students and
staff.
