Union cafe<br />
The Cafe provides a range <strong>of</strong> articles such as confectionery, hot<br />
and cold drinks, hot take-away food, sandwiches and cakes.<br />
The Cafe is conveniently located on the ground level <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Union Building and prices are kept low to meet student budgets.<br />
Contact Resource Centre<br />
This Centre is housed in the building on the corner <strong>of</strong> John<br />
Street and Burwood Road.<br />
The Contact Resource Centre has club rooms and meeting<br />
rooms for clubs to hold meetings. There is a lounge which is<br />
particularly geared for mature-age and part-time students,<br />
although other students have complete access to this room.<br />
The lounge is open from 9.OOam to 10.00pm.<br />
The Centre is also a resource library. This is a starting point for<br />
students doing research on their class projects. The Centre<br />
carries material on current affairs, consumer news, legal aid<br />
and health and welfare leaflets. At the Centre, students can<br />
participate in the awareness-raising process by conducting<br />
special projects. The Centre caters for clubs and societies that<br />
need research and organisational assistance with projects and<br />
functions.<br />
Equipment loan service<br />
The Contact Centre operates as the distribution point for<br />
equipment for gardening, automotive repairs, carpentry, camp-<br />
ing, leisure activity and education. Students and staff are<br />
entitled to hire the equipment at a small charge. Call in at<br />
Contact or the Union Office for details.<br />
Activities Department<br />
Activities are organised on campus by the Student Union and<br />
various clubs and societies to make your stay at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
more enjoyable. These range from bands, barbeques, balls,<br />
workshops, cinema, theatre, comedy acts and discoes.<br />
SCT Resource and Drop-in Centre<br />
To meet the needs <strong>of</strong> TAFE students a Resource and Drop-in<br />
Centre is located on the TAFE campus. In this Centre, parlour<br />
games, magazines and tea and c<strong>of</strong>fee making facilities are<br />
available free <strong>of</strong> charge to students. A lounge and study area is<br />
also provided for student use.<br />
Legal Adviser<br />
The Student Union provides a free legal service for full- and<br />
part-time students. Every week the solicitor is available for your<br />
legal queries. Appointments must be made at the Union Office.<br />
The solicitor is available every Tuesday, during the academic<br />
year, between 2.00pm and 6.00pm.<br />
Education Research Officer<br />
The role <strong>of</strong> the Education Research Officer is to act as advocate<br />
for students in areas <strong>of</strong> dispute. These areas are dealing with<br />
problems between students and lecturersltutors in a confiden-<br />
tial manner; advising and assisting students In appeals con-<br />
cerning assessment, course content and course workload; to<br />
assist students through the use <strong>of</strong> course evaluation surveys,<br />
and to do educational research for the Union.<br />
The Student Union's Education Research Officer is located in<br />
the Union Office to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> Institute and TAFE<br />
students.<br />

Sports Association<br />

At <strong>Swinburne</strong> there is a very active Sports Association which<br />
promotes and encourages a wide variety <strong>of</strong> sporting and<br />
recreational activities. The Association is run by students and<br />
has over twenty affiliated clubs. The Association's <strong>of</strong>fice is<br />
housed in the Sports Centre which has four squash courts, a<br />
very well-equipped weight-training gymnasium and table ten-<br />
nislrecreation room. The aim <strong>of</strong> the Association is to promote<br />
greater awareness <strong>of</strong> the benefits <strong>of</strong> physical fitness and<br />
involve student and staff in a variety <strong>of</strong> recreational and sporting<br />
activities. A diverse program is available including recreational<br />
sports such as SCUBA diving, sailboarding, waterskiing, and<br />
snowskiing and traditional sports <strong>of</strong> football, soccer, netball and<br />
basketball, etc. A fitness appraisal scheme is available along<br />
with a full-time Physical Recreation Officer to advise all<br />
members <strong>of</strong> the Association.<br />
The Association competes in an intercollegiate competition<br />
between other Victorian colleges and on a national level it is<br />
affiliated with the Australian Colleges <strong>of</strong> Advanced Education<br />
Sports Association, which conducts interstate sporting carni-<br />
vals. The sports involved in these competitions are athlet~cs,<br />
badminton, basketball, football, hockey, netball, soccer,<br />
squash, swimming, table-tennis, tennis and volleyball.<br />
In addition to the above sports, there are several other clubs<br />
which arrange activities, trips and competitions.<br />
These include the following:<br />
Aerobics<br />
Classes daily for both men and women at lunchtimes and in the<br />
evenings.<br />
Car<br />
Regular car rallies, motorkhanas, hill-climbs, sprints, films and<br />
social evenings.<br />
Field and game<br />
Club rifles, shotguns, and reloading equipment :2vailable.<br />
Regular skeetltrap shoots and hunting trips are held.<br />
Gymnasium<br />
Well-equipped weight-training gymnasium catering for both<br />
men and women; regular instruction available.<br />
Martial arts<br />
Both Tae Kwon Do and Tan Soo Do classes are conducted on<br />
campus.<br />
Motorcycle<br />
Regular club rides, competitions, plus use <strong>of</strong> club room and<br />
tools.<br />
Sailboarding<br />
Sailboarding <strong>of</strong>fers classes, trips and hiring <strong>of</strong> boards for<br />
participants at all levels <strong>of</strong> this exciting sport.<br />
SCUBA diving<br />
Classes for beginners and regular dives. The club has its own<br />
inflatable dinghy with an outboard. Equipment available for hire.<br />
Snow skiing<br />
Mid-week and weekend trips to Hotham, Buller and Falls Creek<br />
during the mid-year break. Weekend trips during second<br />
semester.<br />
Union Office<br />
This is situated on the fourth level <strong>of</strong> the Union Buildina.<br />
Surfing<br />
Regular trips both local and interstate, equipment available.<br />
Students use it as a drop-in and discussion centre. various Water skiing<br />
services are provided at the general <strong>of</strong>fice including car parking Offers instruction to beginners as well as experienced skiers.<br />

This is a referral and resource point, located on the 3rd level <strong>of</strong><br />
the Union Building, for students seeking information on services<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered within <strong>Swinburne</strong> and in the neighbourhood. Messages<br />
for colleagues can be left here to be collected. Students will find<br />
holidays and weekends.<br />
