The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Centre for Applied Neurosciences was estab- The Applied Science Faculty at <strong>Swinburne</strong> has a Centre which<br />
lished in 1985. carries out the following functions:<br />
Its primary purpose is to facilitate research into the relationship<br />
between human behavioural states and measured brain activ-<br />
ity. The Centre also undertakes contract research in areas<br />
consistent with its primary purpose.<br />
At this stage, the Centre is engaged in research into:<br />
(a) brain electrical activity and schizophrenia;<br />
(b) cortical evoked potentials and recovery from brain damage;<br />
(c) cortical evoked activity and the objective assessment <strong>of</strong><br />
selective attention;<br />
(d) monitoring <strong>of</strong> awareness and anaesthetic depth using<br />
visual evoked potentials.<br />
Other aims <strong>of</strong> the Centre include:<br />
To assist in the teaching <strong>of</strong> the neurosciences in undergraduate<br />
and postgraduate <strong>Swinburne</strong> programs.<br />
To <strong>of</strong>fer a facility enabling individuals to pursue postgraduate<br />
studies in the neurosciences.<br />
To promote the availability and commercial development <strong>of</strong><br />
intellectual property originating within the Centre.<br />
Computer Animation Development Centre<br />

The Centre was established in 1984, following the receipt <strong>of</strong><br />
funding from the Department <strong>of</strong> Employment and Industrial<br />
Affairs.<br />
The Centre runs short courses in computer animation techniques,<br />
specialist industry seminars and acts as an information<br />
resource centre and referral agency.<br />
Equipment installed in the Centre is also used within the<br />
graduate diploma course in film and television for students<br />
specialising in computer animation.<br />
Centre for Computer lntegrated Manufacturing<br />

Established in 1985 under the Key Centres <strong>of</strong> Teaching and<br />
Research Program funded by the Commonwealth Tertiary<br />
Education Commission, the Centre aims to provide a focus for<br />
teaching and research in Computer lntegrated Manufacturing<br />
(CIM).<br />
Funding has been provided for three years during which the<br />
Centre plans to build upon the resources already existing in the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Manufacturing Engineering and the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
Centre for Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing, by<br />
establishing a computer integrated manufacturing facility for<br />
high level teaching <strong>of</strong> CIM to students from all tertiary institutions,<br />
and demonstration and training in the technology for<br />
industry.<br />
The Centre has a group <strong>of</strong> staff available to assist in industrial<br />
development projects in CIM.<br />
Centre for Industrial Democracy<br />

The Centre was established in 1982 to provide an advisory and<br />
referral service to commercial enterprises, government depart-<br />
ments and any other groups who intend to incorporate aspects<br />
<strong>of</strong> industrial democracy.<br />
It has become a clearing house for industrial democracy issues;<br />
papers are published occasionally; seminars and workshops<br />
are organised and it is now part <strong>of</strong> a statewide and interstate<br />
network <strong>of</strong> agencles which provide these facilities.<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers technical information to secondary school staff;<br />
provides the opportunity for secondary students to carry out<br />
experimental work at <strong>Swinburne</strong>, using equipment not readi-<br />
ly available in schools;<br />
operates the Travelling Science and <strong>Technology</strong> Show<br />
which is designed to stimulate interest in science;<br />
provides a meeting place for the exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas between<br />
teachers.<br />
Centre for Urban Studies<br />

The Centre for Urban Studies was established at <strong>Swinburne</strong> to<br />
co-ordinate and promote the involvement <strong>of</strong> teaching staff in the<br />
urban studies field. The Management Committee is composed<br />
<strong>of</strong> staff from Sociology, Psychology, Mathematics, Economics<br />
and Civil Engineering, which reflects the multidisciplined<br />
approach at the Centre. A program <strong>of</strong> short courses, seminars<br />
and research forms the basis <strong>of</strong> act~vities. Short courses have<br />
included Landscape Design and Local Area Traffic Management,<br />
and seminars, where outside specialists have been<br />
invited as guest speakers, included The Informal Economy and<br />
the City and The Local State.<br />
More recently, the Centre has become increasingly involved in<br />
urban research. The lnner East Housing Study, funded by the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Community Welfare Services, examined the<br />
changing demographic trends <strong>of</strong> the lnner East Region and the<br />
implications for housing provision and local housing policy. A<br />
study on Youth Housing Policy for the Australian Housing<br />
Research Council focused on the need, demand and supply <strong>of</strong><br />
housing for youth in Melbourne, Sydney and a country region.<br />
Other continuing research includes a study <strong>of</strong> the development,<br />
location and impact <strong>of</strong> public housing in Melbourne; preparation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> publications for the Institute <strong>of</strong> Family Studies on<br />
contemporary housing and its impact on the Australian family;<br />
preparation <strong>of</strong> housing studies for local municipalities, and<br />
establishment <strong>of</strong> a housing data base for the Melbourne<br />
metropolitan area.<br />
Centre for Women's Studies<br />

The Centre for Women's Studies was established in 1984 and<br />
is comprised <strong>of</strong> members drawn from all divisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
who have a wide range <strong>of</strong> expertise relevant to gender and the<br />
status <strong>of</strong> women.<br />
The activities <strong>of</strong> the Centre include:<br />
Presenting short courses on topics which concern women<br />
and gender (e.g., feminist theory, women and literature).<br />
Such courses are open to the general public.<br />
Carrying out research projects which investigate aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
the status <strong>of</strong> women and social policy relevant to the special<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> women.<br />
Compiling educational materials relating to women's studies<br />
for use in teaching courses on sex and gender as well as for<br />
inclusion in existing courses.<br />
