Undergraduate<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

The general criterion for consideration for entry to a <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

course is <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s assessment <strong>of</strong> an applicant's ability to<br />

complete a chosen course.<br />

1. To satisfy the general entrance requirements and to be<br />

considered for admission to the first year <strong>of</strong> a degree or<br />

diploma course a student must have satisfied one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

following:<br />

1.1 Completed successfully a Year 12 course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

accredited by the Victorian lnstitute <strong>of</strong> Secondary<br />

Education (VISE), or completed a course deemed<br />

equivalent by VISE;<br />

1.2 Satisfied the requirements <strong>of</strong> an approved Tertiary<br />

Orientation Program at a Victorian technical school or<br />

TAFE college;<br />

1.3 Obtained, prior to 1979, grades <strong>of</strong> D or higher in at least<br />

four subjects at the Victorian Higher School Certificate<br />

examination or satisfied the requirements <strong>of</strong> Victorian<br />

adult matriculation;<br />

1.4 Gained a qualification deemed by the lnstitute to be the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the above.<br />

2. In addition to meeting the general requirements above,<br />

applicants must also satisfy any prerequisite or special<br />

requirements specified by the faculty conducting the course<br />

and listed in the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Handbook.<br />

3. Each faculty may specify criteria for special entry schemes,<br />

covering applicants who may not hold the necessary formal<br />

entry qualifications but who in the course selection <strong>of</strong>ficer's<br />

view have the motivation and potential to successfully<br />

complete the course concerned.<br />

Application procedure<br />

Full-time<br />

First year<br />

Applications for entry to full-time study at the first year level,<br />

except for the special provisions <strong>note</strong>d below, must be made<br />

through the Victorian Universities Admissions Committee<br />

(VUAC), 40 Park Street, South Melbourne, 3205.<br />

Applications must be made on the appropriate VUAC form:<br />

Form N<br />

For students studying at HSC or TOP level at present, copies <strong>of</strong><br />

the form are made available through the schools and colleges<br />

concerned. Students should consult the VUAC publication,<br />

Guide for Prospective 1986 Students.<br />

Form E<br />

For all other applicants. Copies <strong>of</strong> the form, and the Guide for<br />

Prospective 1986 Students in which it is enclosed, are obtain-<br />

able from VUAC.<br />

Special provisions<br />

Full-time<br />

Second year and higher<br />

Applications should be made directly to <strong>Swinburne</strong> and not<br />

through VUAC. Forms can be obtained from the Admissions<br />

Officer, 819 8386.<br />

Closing dates for full-time places in second and higher years<br />

are:<br />

Applied Science 10 January 1986<br />

Art - Film and Television 25 October 1985<br />

- Graphic Design 15 November 1985<br />

Arts 17 January 1986<br />

Business 17 January 1986<br />

Engineering 17 January 1986<br />

Part-time<br />

Part-time courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in all faculties except Art.<br />

All applications for part-time courses must be made directly to<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>. Forms are obtained from the Admissions Officer,<br />

819 8386.<br />

Closing dates for part-time places are:<br />

Applied Science 10 January 1986<br />

Arts 17 January 1986<br />

Business 17 January 1986<br />

Engineering 17 January 1986<br />

The special provisions for mature-age entry set out above apply<br />

for entry to first year part-time courses. Applications under the<br />

provisions for part-time places should be forwarded to the<br />

Admissions Officer by the dates stipulated.<br />

Deferred entry<br />

Students who are <strong>of</strong>fered a place in first year for 1986 may<br />

apply for a deferment until 1987. Applications must be addres-<br />

sed to the Registrar, and must be made at the time an <strong>of</strong>fer is<br />

received.<br />

Deferment <strong>of</strong> up to one year will be virtually automatic for those<br />

students who apply as soon as they receive an <strong>of</strong>fer. Students<br />

who have been granted deferment will be informed in writing by<br />

the faculty concerned.<br />

Deferments will be valid for one year only, for entry to the<br />

particular course for which the original <strong>of</strong>fer was made.<br />

If a student who has been granted a deferment applies to<br />

another faculty or to another college or university, the <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a<br />

reserved place will lapse.<br />

Overseas students<br />

Approval to study in Australia must first be granted by the<br />

Australian Government. Prospective students must, in the first<br />

instance, contact the Australian High Commission or the<br />

Embassy nearest their home in AprilIJune <strong>of</strong> the year before<br />

they wish to commence their studies.<br />

Applications to enter first year at <strong>Swinburne</strong> lnstitute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />

(or any other college <strong>of</strong> advanced education, institute or<br />

university in Victoria) should be made before 4 October 1985, to<br />

the Victorian Universities Admissions Committee (VUAC).<br />

Applications to enter later years <strong>of</strong> tertiary courses should be<br />

made direct to the Registrar.<br />

Governments <strong>of</strong> some countries have special requirements for<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> College <strong>of</strong> TAFE students<br />

Tertiary Orientation Program<br />

Tertiary Orientation Program students should consult the Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> the ~ , ~ <strong>of</strong> ~~~~~~l , ~ studies, i ~ ~ swinburne college <strong>of</strong> TAFE,<br />

with regard to application procedure.<br />
