Smoking is permitted only in the stair lobbies, level 2 and in<br />

those areas clearly marked by notices.<br />

Cigarettes must not be placed anywhere except in the ashtrays<br />

provided.<br />

Bags and cases may be brought into the library, but must be<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered for inspection on leaving.<br />

An atmosphere <strong>of</strong> quiet must be maintained in the library so that<br />

it is at all times a place conducive to independent study and<br />

quiet reading. Silence must be kept in the areas indicated and<br />

conversation restricted to the areas set aside for this purpose.<br />

Any person who, in the opinion <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the library staff<br />

and the senior staff member on the premises, repeatedly fails to<br />

observe the above rules, or who disfigures or damages a book,<br />

periodical or any other library resource or fitting in any way, may<br />

be excluded from the library for the rest <strong>of</strong> the day, and shall be<br />

responsible for all damage caused.<br />

Persistent or serious <strong>of</strong>fenders may be reported by the<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Librarian to the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Registrar for disciplinary<br />

action which may include suspension <strong>of</strong> borrowing privileges,<br />

exclusion from the library, and withholding <strong>of</strong> examination<br />

results.<br />

Power to alter rules<br />

One or more <strong>of</strong> the rules for general conduct may be changed<br />

from time to time by the Director, Educational Services, on the<br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Librarian.<br />

At the discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Librarian one or more <strong>of</strong> the<br />

rules may, under special circumstances, be temporarily suspended.<br />

Each suspension shall be reported at the earliest<br />

opportunity to the Director, Educational Services and to the<br />

Librarv Committee.<br />

Photocopying<br />

Photocopying machines available to staff and students are<br />

located on level one <strong>of</strong> the library building. Users must <strong>note</strong> the<br />

relevant provisions <strong>of</strong> the Copyright ~ ct, and abide by them,<br />

These services, with the exception <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> the Chaplain, are<br />

administered by the Student Health and Welfare Unit.<br />

Student counselling<br />

The Student Counselling Service is available to students, staff,<br />

prospective students, parents and partners <strong>of</strong> students. The<br />

service is free and strictly confidential.<br />

Counselling is concerned with helping people, individually and<br />

in groups, with personal problems, vocational and career<br />

decision and planning, course and career information, financial<br />

concerns and study problems.<br />

Some areas <strong>of</strong> student concern are: loneliness, adjustment to<br />

life at <strong>Swinburne</strong>, subject choice, deferment, choosing a<br />

course, examination anxiety, exclusion, vocational choice,<br />

studying part-time, leave <strong>of</strong> absence, academic difficulties,<br />

concern about others, study problems, marital and pre-marital<br />

counselling, relationships, disabilities, sexuality, family, finan-<br />

cial problems, career planning and decisions, scholarships and<br />

student allowances.<br />

The counselling service is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm<br />

throughout the year and remains open for part-time students on<br />

Monday evenings until 6.30pm or at other times by appoint-<br />

ment.<br />

To assist students and prospective students in their choice <strong>of</strong><br />

careers and courses, the Careers lnformation Counsellor main-<br />

tains a comprehensive library including information on a wide<br />

range <strong>of</strong> courses at <strong>Swinburne</strong> and elsewhere: appren-<br />

ticeships, evening classes, middle-level courses in TAFE col-<br />

leges, tertiary and postgraduate courses.<br />

The library is for the use <strong>of</strong> all <strong>Swinburne</strong> students and staff,<br />

prospective students and schools within the area.<br />

The Student Employment Office provides more specific in-<br />

formation on employers and employment opportunities.
