Information tools These are applications that provide information in various<br />
formats (for example, text, sound, graphics and video). Examples of informative<br />
tools include multimedia encyclopaedias and resources available in the<br />
World-Wide-Web (WWW).<br />
Situating tools These are systems that situate students in an environment where<br />
they may ‘experience’ the context and happenings. Such systems include<br />
simulation, games and virtual reality.<br />
Construction tools These are usually tools that can be used for manipulating<br />
information, organizing one’s ideas or interpretations. For instance, mind mapping<br />
or social networking applications that allow students to organize their ideas or<br />
reflections and communicate with others.<br />
Communication tools They are applications which facilitate communication<br />
among teachers and students, such as e-mail, blogs, e-conferencing and e-discussion<br />
boards.<br />
In addition to these four categories, ICT may also serve as tutorial and diagnostic<br />
tools. In real classroom practices, perhaps especially in primary school classrooms<br />
where integrated curriculum is commonplace, ICT often serves more than one role<br />
simultaneously. Furthermore, it is likely that developments in <strong>technology</strong> will lead<br />
to pedagogies that are unrealized and unimagined as yet, which may alter and extend<br />
the above list of roles in the future.<br />
21 st Century Generic Competencies<br />
In many countries it is recognised that there are ‘generic competencies’, necessary<br />
for living, <strong>learning</strong> and working in the 21 st century. One such generic competency is<br />
the ability to use ICT for a variety of purposes, like accessing information,<br />
communicating, building knowledge, representing ideas, problem solving, <strong>creating</strong><br />
and developing ideas and products, collaborating, and <strong>learning</strong> how to learn. The<br />
place of ICT as a generic competency is now enshrined in policy and curriculum<br />
documents in many countries. For example, in Australia, the use of ICT has been<br />
identified as ‘general capability’, needed by all students to succeed in life and work<br />
in the 21 st century (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority,<br />
2011).<br />
Because ICT is constantly developing, opportunities for teaching and <strong>learning</strong><br />
are also continually evolving. For example, the use of computers and the Internet<br />
no longer need to be positioned in fixed places; mobile technologies allow<br />
interaction via text messaging and access to the Internet wherever and whenever<br />
one wants. A significant development of ICT in primary classrooms is<br />
the introduction of tablet computers such as the Apple iPad. These mobile<br />
tablet devices are being introduced into primary classrooms around the world<br />
and teachers and children are finding new ways of using them to fulfil a variety<br />
