En la mañana del 15 de agosto, los
Samilantes cumplen con su danza
ritual de adoración frente a la iglesia
y junto a los fieles acompañan a la
imagen en procesión por las calles
del pueblo. Pasado el mediodía, los
improvisados toreros comienzan su
labor, encomendándose previamente
a la Virgen. Desafían al toro que
les tocó en suerte para quitarle de
entre los cuernos una vincha roja
con monedas de plata para ofrendársela
a la Patrona. El ritual es de agradecimiento
y pedido de protección y
mantiene viva una tradición española,
introducida en la región durante
de la época de la colonia.
Es el único lugar en Argentina, donde
pervive esta costumbre ancestral
taurina, siendo una ceremonia incruenta..

streets begins. The whole villagers will
accompany the Virgin’s image. After
midday, improvised “toreros” – bullfighters
– after entrusting themselves
to the Virgin’s protection – begin their
labor: They defy one bull trying to catch
a red headband adorned with silver
coins from the bull’s horns. Once their
task is successfully completed, the toreros
offer the headband to the Virgin’s
image. This is a ritual of Spanish origin
kept alive since the time of the colonies
in South America. A ritual of these
characteristics is only to be seen in Jujuy
and it is a bloodless bullfight.
