RSection 77.8 DRIVE BELTSB. Blade SharpeningAll drive belts are spring-loaded and self-tensioning,however after the first 2, 4, 8 and 10 hours of operation,the belts should be checked for proper alignment and wear.Thereafter, check the belts after every 40 hours of operationor weekly, whichever occurs first.- NOTE -If you experience frequent belt wear or breakage,see your authorized <strong>Scag</strong> service center for beltadjustment.7.9 CUTTER BLADESA. Blade Inspection1.2.3.Remove the ignition key before servicing the blades.Raise the mower deck to the highest position. Placethe lanyard pin in the highest cutting height positionto prevent the cutter deck from falling.WARNINGAlways wear proper hand and eye protection whenworking with cutter blades.Check the cutter blades for straightness. If the cutterblades appear bent, they will need to be replaced.WARNINGDo not attempt to straighten a bent blade, andnever weld a broken or cracked blade. Alwaysreplace it with a new blade to assure safety.1.2.- NOTE -If possible, use a file to sharpen the blade. Usinga wheel grinder may burn the blade.- NOTE -DO NOT sharpen the blades beyond 1/3 of thewidth of the blade. See Figure 7-7.Sharpen the cutting edge at the same bevel as theoriginal. See Figure 7-7. Sharpen only the top of thecutting edge to maintain sharpness.Do Not Cut In30Angle Blade BackFigure 7-7. If the blades are outof balance, vibration and premature wear can occur.See your authorized <strong>Scag</strong> dealer for blade balancingor special tools, if you choose to balance your ownblades.C. Blade ReplacementWARNINGAlways wear proper hand and eye protection whenworking with cutter blades.4.If a blade cutting edge is dull or nicked, it should besharpened. Remove the blades for sharpening. See"Blade Replacement."- NOTE -Keep the blades sharp. Cutting with dull blades notonly yields a poor mowing job, but slows the cuttingspeed of the mower and causes extra wear on theengine and the blade drive by pulling hard.1.2.3.Remove the ignition key before replacing the blades.Raise the mower deck to the highest position. Placethe lanyard pin in the highest cutting height positionto prevent the cutter deck from falling.Secure the cutter blades to prevent them fromrotating, (use the optional Blade Buddy tool P/N9212, to assist in securing the cutter blades), removethe nut from the blade attaching bolt. Remove thecutter blade, bolt and spacer from the spindle shaft.See Figure 7-8.35
