Biología de la Conservación de Vella pseudocytisus subsp. pauiAbstractThe flora of Aragon sum up 3,398 vascular plants and 691 bryophytes, but notall of them are in a good conservation status. This chapter offers a quick review of theconservation context in Aragon, specifically for threatened flora and for Vella pseudocytisussubsp. paui.Since the end of the 20th century a considerable amount of research has beenelaborated towards plant conservation in Aragon. It is worth mentioning the taskcarried out by IPE, the publication of “Strategies for threatened flora conservation inAragon”, the LIFE program “Study and conservation of 14 species of threatened florain Aragon” 1997-2000, and the different stages of AFA, which have laid the basis tothe legal rules for nature conservation. The “Natural de Aragón” network incorporates a broad number of Natural ProtectedAreas and other elements, among them Natura 2000 Network is the most extensive(13,549 km 2 , 28.4% of Aragon surface). From another point of view, at presentthe Threatened Species Catalogue of Aragon (CEAA) is made up of 136 plants (15endangered, 20 sensitive to habitat perturbation, 45 vulnerable and 56 of special interest)and 93 animals (11, 19, 21 and 43 respectively, plus one extinct). The inclusion of one species in this catalogue implies enacting its action plan. Inthis field, Aragon passed the first ever recovery plan for a plant in Europe, the onefor Boderea chouardii, paving the way for more plans to other species. Specifically forplants, there are three recovery plans: for B. chouardii, Vella pseudocytisus subsp. pauiand Cypripedium calceolus and one conservation plan for Krascheninnikovia ceratoides. As a whole, there has been five action plans for animals, among them the recoveryplans for breaded vulture, mussel Margaritifera auricularia and freshwater crayfish, and the habitat conservation for lesser kestel are still in force. The Vella recovery plan, in addition to regulate its protection status, proposesseveral guidelines and actions leading to the preservation of individuals and habitats, the rise of awareness and administrative coordination. In this context, it is worth mentioningthe reintroduction of the plant in the region of Calatayud since 2007.In spite of this progress, there are other lines of action that deserve further developementfor the endangered flora as a whole: ex situ conservation, management ofaccurate data, better environmental management, etc. The improvement of all thesetools should help to halt flora habitat lost and population erosion in Aragon.
