ANDINATRAFFIC - EDICION <strong>No</strong>. 4I&S ITS modernizes the trafficcontrol systems in PragueITS has a contract with the Technická správakomunikací Praha (TSK - Technical municipalauthorities for street maintenance) to supply,modernize and maintain the traffic controlinstallations. The aim is to improve the flow oftraffic by introducing control concepts that dependon the traffic situation. At the same time, the failuresafety of the technical systems is to be increasedand fault rectification is to be accelerated. Thecontract is worth 4.4 billion crowns (around 156million €) for 15 years.Traffic control in Prague is currently divided intoten zones. Only five of these have a traffic controlcenter and are connected to the main trafficcontrol center. By 2010, five new traffic controlcenters will have been installed and the existingones will have been modernized with SitrafficScala traffic computers. Within the next ten years,the number of intersections fitted with traffic lightsis to be increased from today’s 474 to 700. Thetraffic control installations at intersections will beconnected to the local traffic control centers bydata cables. The new traffic lights to be installedwill be equipped with Sitraffic C900V.The new systems and equipment are in accordancewith the OCIT standard. This will ensurecompatibility with the existing traffic installationsand control systems such as the prioritizationsystem installed at some intersections to givepriority to public transport vehiclesA central objective of the modernization projectis to improve the flow of traffic in the Czechcapital. With the help of signal plans which aredependent on the area traffic, for example, theSitraffic Scala traffic computer system enablesthe traffic to be controlled on the basis of its actualdensity within a zone. All 700 intersections will beconnected to this system. In addition, most of thetraffic lights will be able to work in local dynamicmode. This will allow automatic extension of thegreen phase when the traffic density is high,27
