ENGLISH TRANSLATION ered very crucial. Indeed, the breasts lack muscular fiber and the jostling and vibrating involved causes them to be subjected to up to 9 cm of vertical movement when a woman practices a sport. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The survey carried out by Ipsos for Mode City & Interfilière confirms that French women are well informed about the basic functions of the materials utilized in garments intended for sports-related use. But it is in this very field that the textile industry continues to come out with new technical breakthroughs in order to offer every higher levels of comfort and performance, accompanied by greater concern for safeguarding the environment. One of the functions that is relatively new in the area of textiles for athletic garments is compression, a technology prevalently applied in the medical sector. The effect of compression is obtained with a knit fabric featuring graduated elasticity, providing greater compression at the ankle, gradually reducing this effect as the items moves up toward the thigh. This graduated constriction makes it possible to stimulate circulation, retard the emission of lactic acid (the cause of excruciating cramps) and accelerate recovery after physical exertion. Other desirable effects induced by the action are greater proprioception (awareness, control and precision of movement) and a very welcome sense of support, especially critical in the case of endurance sports. The classic synthetics (polyamide, polyester and elastan) are obtained primarily from the transformation of petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Recently, however, thanks to research ever greater use is being made of an alternative chemical obtained from biomass (corn, sugar beet and agricultural waste products). Not only are these so-called biosourced products renewable, in certain cases they are also biodegradable. Currently this exciting but still developing textile field only boasts a few marketable materials, but every day new products are being studied and developed. And there happen to be a number of Italians among the pioneers in the field of biosourced fabrics. BODY LOVE WITH ANNA VICTORIA Anna Victoria (spokeswoman for Triaction by Triumph) is a fitness coach who has developed a very intense workout technique, a woman who also knows what she wants when it comes to athletic underwear. "My underwear items for athletic use, especially my bras, have to be lightweight but, at the same time, provide maximum support. When I wear these items I must be able to count on protection without added weight and bulk when engaging in athletic activities. I wear athletic bras every day! I do this because I find Triaction bras to be more comfortable than the ones not designed for sports-related activities. Comfortable, suitable underwear is extremely important while engaged in sporting activities. It provides you with a sense of safety and protection that enables you to push yourself to perform at the maximum of your potential without worrying about support or the possibility that something might slip and shift position. Considerations ofcomfort and, naturally, style come right after the key requirement: support.” THE EXPERIENCE OF THREE ATHLETES Three female athletes, their different activities and their underwear. We asked three women to tell usabout their most intimate apparel 1 | Ilaria Toschi | yoga I use athletic underwear every day, at least for when I’m practicing a sport or while teaching. And sometimes simply during the course of normal daily activities. I’m very comfortable and at perfect ease wearing a top in microfiber by Pompea because it is made from a very soft, breathable fabric with no seams, metallic components or plastic elements. I have used more high-tech brands, like Nike and low-cost brands, like Decathlon, and even plain cotton tops by anonymous brands. I am able to find Pompea at the supermarket as well as in stores selling sports gear and attire (in particular Decathlon). I have never opted to go to an intimate apparel store to find sports-related underwear. When it comes to the features I am most eager to find when shopping for underwear suitable for athletic or fitness use, the most important property is softness. I like it to move with the body, that it contours and supports without in any way constricting. The lightness of the fabric and breathability are additional necessary characteristics. I have no patience with synthetic items that turn out to be only slightly elastic. Probably due to my particular build (tall, with a small bust) I have a hard time finding models in the exact right size for me. Items that fit me through the chest and in terms of length generally come with cups that are too big and, vice versa, when I find a good fit for my breasts, the shoulder straps are too short (when I raise my arms, for instance) or the item is uncomfortably tight along the band right under my bust. 2 | Britta Ushkamp | running Underwear for athletic applications, especially bras, has to be comfortable, while holding the bust in the right position, allowing the breasts only an essential minimal freedom of movement. This is why I prefer to get models that guarantee maximum support. When running this is obviously of critical importance. In the case of long-distance event it is vitally crucial that the fastening of the bra in back be extra-soft, otherwise it could scratch and irritate the skin. I have already experienced an ugly surprise of this nature halfway through an important marathon. Exacerbated by continued movement and perspiration, the fastening of the bra left a nasty sore on my skin, an injury that took a long time to heal completely. So now, before a race I wrap the bra fastening with a plaster type bandage or adhesive fabric in order to avoid having the same thing happen again – even if the bra is well constructed and the fastening seems to be plenty soft. My favorite running bra is the Momentum Pro model by Anita Active. The frontal fastening system, connected to the straps is perfect for my purposes. It also turns out to be easier to take off if you have to change in public during an athletic event. When it comes to briefs, I have managed to find an absolutely fabulous model by the Lulu Lemon brand. It’s a super-soft thong in modal, perfect for running. The seams in this model are so soft you feel like you’re wearing nothing! When it gets really hot out, I prefer running shorts with an incorporated underwear lining. I also wear my athletic bras for everyday occasions, practically on a daily basis. 3 | Mareva Ranftl | running, triathlon, surfing and swimming The perfect bra for the sports I practice shouldn’t compress the bust too much and has to always guarantee maximum comfort without scratching or leaving marks or, God forbid, sores on the skin. It also has to be attractive and lend itself to being sported as an outerwear top, without the addition of T-shirt or anything else.
