olor. Artistas de distintas generaciones y nacionalidades proponen
diferentes temperaturas desde las más variadas disciplinas,
trabajando la memoria y carácter del espacio.
A mi madre
Me explicaré.
a rosa, a ajo…
Y no me refiero físicamente (aunque a veces
postula el nombre y Joan Brossa cierra el trato: «te lo regalo»;
sociedad y respondiendo a nuestras propuestas.
olor. Se generan así distintas temperaturas, aprovechando la
memoria y carácter del espacio. Algunas funcionarán separadas,
individualmente; otras buscando significados conjuntos,
cobrando nuevas vidas al unirse visualmente. El espacio
se piensa desde muchos puntos de vista.
No pocos autores focalizaron sus experiencias desde la sinestesia;
pintores como Kandinsky, poetas como Arthur Rimbaud,
compositores como Alexander Scriabin y Olivier Messiaen
18
No pocas obras huelen a tiempos
Me
ambos casos el espectador se adentra en un espacio íntimo;
Ofelia, inexpresiva, enajenada
que entiende como reacción interactiva permanente;
Juan Uslé, Albert Oehlen, Jessica Stockholder, etc.
No anda nada lejos
Nuria Fuster o Jannis Kounellis.
Jonathan Lasker, Art & Languaje, Federico Herrero o Luis
estuviese comprimiendo a otro.
He ahí la paradoja.
JUAN LUIS MORAZA
Koldo XIV-K 14-KA, 1998
•
Escultura • Bronce, madera y acero
• 10 x 30 x 30 cm + 151 x 20 x 20 cm (peana)
sean temporales»—Zygmunt Bauman
extenso work in progress cuyo motor son un constante cuestionamiento
Deconstruir, diseccionar, desmenuzar, desdibujar o cartografiar
DOUGLAS GORDON
Self-portrait of you + me (Jenny Agutter), 2006
•
corporalidad, suspendida y enraizada, sarta rítmica circular, secada y
que suene siempre igual, para que el sonido baile como baila una flauta;
olor? ¿Debía buscar a esa persona?
Anguiano huele a caída.
Inmediatamente me
por los que vivimos son una combinación de sentimientos y pensamientos;
English Texts
Olfactory notes by Ernesto Ventós
· The sense of smell is the first sense we develop at birth. This being so, we grow up
surrounded by smells: of our family, of food, of the neighbourhood, of school.
· All of my memories of my family are linked to smells: wet earth with eucalyptus,
cups of tea at my grandmother›s, mothballs in drawers and wardrobes, tobacco…
· Art is a coded language, which makes it absolutely necessary to acquire a
specialized vision of it. The same is true of perfume: breathe in through the
nose, smell to reveal its codes.
· The way we look at the outside world is not the same as the way we look at a work
of art. This latter mechanism of perception may be similar to how smell works.
· The (olfactory) note may be pleasing or disagreeable, well constructed, even
original, surprising and attractive … but one can always find something
missing, something hard to possibly explain that will possibly give it charm, it
seems to me. That›s why I always insist that love is an essential component of
the perfumer´s craft.
· A landscape whose contemplation requires no effort can be as interesting and
as rich in suggestions as a painting or a sculpture that is unique in the world. In
many cases they are like the smells that people admire, which most of the time
are grand, but not necessarily beautiful.
· The scale I practice in smelling each day is:
Smelling art
Smelling the neighbourhood
Smelling colour
Smelling characteristics
· Oler y comprender is a work by Bernard Rancillac. Learning to smell in order
to understand—understanding in order to smell better: this is my own personal
adaptation of the title to prove that another sense, such as smell, can also
facilitate our comprehension of the language of art.
· As Rancillac observes, ‹… no one has ever become a painter from the mere
fact of contemplating nature, a beautiful tree, a beautiful woman …,› and
no one has ever become creator of essences from the mere fact of smelling a
wonderful fragrance.
· Artists express themselves by means of gestures; at once form and colour,
volume and movement, their intrinsic qualities serving to manifest elegance
in a line, sensibility, aggressiveness, sensitive, dry, shy, sensual and so on,
qualities that are also, curiously enough, apparent in fragrances.
· It is this interrelation between the world of art and the world of fragrances
that very often allows me to interpret a work of art according to the criteria for
appreciating a fragrance.
Living from the Essence
It may be that the above title can be read as suggesting that we are talking here
about seeing life in terms of spirituality, but that is not the case; my aim here is
to show how someone with a special sensitivity can understand the world around
them, in its innermost reality, by way of a sense. Let me explain.
Allow me to introduce a gentleman from Barcelona, a perfumer by profession,
an art lover and a collector. He is also a creative artist in two very different
realms: perfume and the visual arts. In the latter he goes under the pseudonym
Nasevo (nas, which is 'nose' in Catalan, followed by the initials of his name,
Ernesto Ventós Omedes), he gives his tireless imagination free rein to interpret
the world through his nasal appendage, because the nose is the line of continuity.
Born and bred among drums of the raw materials used to create perfumes and
essences, and trained to become in time what is known as a 'nose of reference',
Ernesto would be incapable of understanding the world around him without his
sense of smell. When you are with him, you are aware of how much he is able to
perceive and of how much you are missing—'this smells of roses, of garlic …'—
and you feel like an olfactory illiterate. But Ernesto has always sought to go further,
to break down the barriers of this physical guide, and set out to use this innate and
cultivated ability to build up his collection of art: colección olorVISUAL (visual smell
collection) is his great olfactory chord, commenced 37 years ago. Because, for him,
art smells. And I do not mean physically (though that, too, at times), but rather that
an artwork awakens in him an olfactory perception, an olfactory memory. Thanks
to this privileged memory the works, whatever their artistic language, communicate
something special to him: 'this piece smells,' he declares emphatically. And his
memories appear to him like a cascade, by way of their smells.
This singular approach to collecting has not been easy, quite the opposite: at
first, the appeals to artists and galleries fell on deaf ears. So complicated was the
beginning that this collection almost failed to take shape. But one of these invitations
was sent to Albert Ràfols Casamada, who felt that he understood Ernesto, because
he had painted a series of canvases based on his olfactory memories. Sometimes
coincidences are written somewhere, so that they come to be, and this is what
happened with the painting Lavanda, from 1979: 'I was thrilled when I saw reflected
in a small canvas my olfactory memory of lavender fields, when I was a student of
perfumery,' Ernesto has said. It was that simple and that complex.
From this moment on, and thanks to Ràfols Casamada, artists and galleries
begin to acknowledge this different way of collecting and to help the enthusiastic
art lover to create colección olorVISUAL. This was to be composed not only of the
visual works by the different artists, but also of the texts in which they wrote of
their artistic-olfactory perceptions.
The name … is due to another great artist, Joan Brossa, a close friend of
Ernesto's, who told him 'I make visual poetry and you, with your collection,
make smell visual'. The collector liked this, asked if he could borrow the name,
and Brossa closed the deal: 'I'm giving it to you.' And, in effect, the singularity of
the collection is reflected in this special gift.
But let's get to the essence. Ernesto had a very clear objective in starting the
collection: to teach people to smell through art, and to teach people to see art
through smell. But why was the collector so committed to championing this
sense? Simply because he is a perfumer? Because we all share the same fact:
smell is the first sense that allows us to discover the world around us when we
are born. And thanks to smell that we can be transported back to a past time, to
some experience we lived many years ago. It is, therefore, a sense that leads from
the purely physical to the deeply emotional. Sadly, though, we lose the ability to
130
smell as we mature into adulthood. This is where colección olorVISUAL rescues that
capacity from oblivion and makes it a mediating element that enables us engage
with contemporary art in the collection's exhibitions and educational activities.
Essències (Essences) is the title of eleven exhibitions held between 1996 and
2006. Each of the shows since 2009 has had its own specific title, given that each
is articulated around a thesis that differentiates it from the others. Olor de… (Smell
of …) is the title of the series of exhibitions whose main thesis is the forging of
close links with the location in which each is staged.
It is thrilling to see how the people who take part in the olfactory workshops,
olfactory screenings and olfactory experiences—both children or adults—
let themselves be carried away by colección olorVISUAL, breaking out of the
straitjacket imposed by established social canons and responding to our proposals.
For example, when people are asked to describe the colour red in olfactory
terms, they may say it smells like fruit and flowers, but also blood, and on a more
visceral and emotion level associate it with love, anger, passion, sex, anxiety …
Fear smells of sulphur and metal; for most of us it has an acidic, bitter smell …
'it smells black,' people have told us. When the olfactory challenge is posed by an
artwork from the collection such as Nanna Hänninen's 2009 video piece Trying to
be a better me, we find that it smells of emotions, of a closed space, of time, but is
not associated with any colour, but other works from colección olorVISUAL prompt
an emphatic chromatic response: 'it smells of green' or 'it smells pink', even
though the colours cited are not in fact present in the work.
Art is able to awaken the senses and colección olorVISUAL awakens our
memories and recollections by means of smell. The capacity of art to evoke
sensations is not confined to visual art, of course, but we can say that the
evocation of our olfactory memory is part of the patrimony of colección
olorVISUAL. Let's let our noses lead the way!
Cristina Agàpito
Direction – conservation, colección olorVISUAL
Interplaying Sensations
Art is a world of sensorial experiences. A crossbred, hybrid universe. Hence
it is so easy to stoke a controversy, because we are talking about tastes, about
sensations. We view the same image differently depending on our artistic affinities,
our sensibility and knowledge, our readings, films and experiences. We do so
depending on the context of the image, as well. One pioneering example that
reflected on the polysemy of the image was the Kuleshov effect or Mozhukin
experiment, which revolved around the idea that an individual plane was neutral
in its intrinsic intention and only gained meaning once it was linked to a sequence
of images, that is, once it was given a context. The same face, the same word or
the same act can mean many different things thanks to this polysemic richness
we have based on a context and, of course, on who is in charge of digesting and
perceiving this message. Thus, the simple act of ‘kissing’ can be a sign of affection,
a simple greeting (a ritual interaction), a sign of betrayal (a Judas kiss), a sign of
peace, a sign of respect (a kiss on the hand), an erotic expression, a provocation,
harassment, a blessing (a kiss on the forehand), a sign of religious veneration,
subordination, a sign of compassion or even a crime.
The word synaesthesia comes from the Greek “together” and “sensation” and
was coined to name the merger of different senses. If we normally smell smells,
131
taste flavours, hear sounds and feel when we touch something, when one of
these senses is severely underdeveloped or absent, another one often develops to
an unusual degree. But is it possible to experience flavours when we hear words?
Can we see colours when we hear a sound? Of course we can. This is what is
known as synaesthesia, which is as closely tied to art as it is to life itself; in fact, it
is said that newborns experience the different senses mixed together.
The sensation of art, just like the sensation of synaesthetic perceptions,
is often automatic or involuntary. Sometimes, as with synaesthesia, this first
impression becomes a phenomenon that remains stable over time. Other times,
it becomes more a recollection and vanishes. However, just like all information,
this sensation is stored as a memory, and over time it becomes increasingly
inaccessible, turning into what we call the curve of forgetting. Also, into the
context of our lives. Hence this exhibition is curated in this way, even though
it more resembles the literary resource of synaesthesia than synaesthesia
itself. Ultimately, the goal is to emphasise each work’s condition to create an
ambiance, an atmosphere which is capable of enriching the description of this
idiosyncratic, unique collection made up of the visual scent of Ernesto Ventós.
This exhibition, which includes some of the fascinating works from the
olorVISUAL collection, attempts to activate the senses, something like penetrating
a sensorial abyss related to our history, to life. As viewers, we will have the sense of
walking and surrendering to the unknown, similar to walking through a forest, like
someone who is chasing a scent. Thus, different temperatures are generated, taking
advantage of the memory and nature of the space. Some will operate separately,
individually, while others seek joint meanings, getting a new lease on life when they
are visually conjoined. The space is planned from many different vantage points.
Not a few authors focus their experiences through synaesthesia: painters like
Kandinsky, poets like Arthur Rimbaud, composers like Alexander Scriabin and
Olivier Messiaen and writers like Vladimir Nabokov are just a few examples.
Synaesthesia is a mix of auditory, visual, gustative, olfactory and tactile sensations,
something like a maximum expansion of feelings, associations that help us to
memorise abstract concepts by linking them to sensorial realities; in short, associations
that help us to understand the metaphorical universe of contemporary art.
Together, the works in the olorVISUAL collection expand the meanings of
each individual work with their olfactory traits. It is not so different from when
Joseph Kosuth planned his work One and Three Chairs in the 1960s with the goal of
offering the viewer a kind of analytical interpretation of three ways of channelling
the meaning of the same object. The proposal is closer to synaesthesia than to the
world of hallucinations because it is not a false perception. Nothing in the environs
triggers a hallucination—unless one is under the effect of substances like LSD,
for example—but in synaesthesia there is an external stimulus that induces the
synaesthetic sensation. Hope as green or that love is red are colour notions that waver
if we think about Fauvism. Only by putting ourselves in the place of the synaesthetic
association can we understand the real existence of a red room or blue apples. Only a
synaesthete can see the word ‘sky’ as orange, even if it is written in black ink.
The attitude of the perfumer, a trade in which Ernesto Ventós worked
through family tradition and vocation, envelopes us in another time. It is similar
to what Michael Hardt once described regarding time in prison, a time that
stretches and collapses in a kind of optical illusion. It is a predestined time where
nothing is unpredictable. Hence prisoners try in vain to grasp onto this volatile
and ephemeral time by giving it some expression, even if just symbolically,
such as by making scratches on the wall to mark its passing. In the works of the
olorVISUAL collection, the opposite happens: time stretches out as a defence
mechanism against a world of events that happen too quickly.
132
As the viewers, we are thus like a kind of imperfect librarian, as Borges says about
man in his story The Library of Babel. All of this is not too far from the perfumer’s
piano, that precious tool of the composer of fragrances, where the bottles that
contain the different raw materials used to craft the essences are stored. Just like
Ernesto Ventós, we know that life smells and penetrates us without barriers, imposing
its presence. In the transmission of a memory, smells do not deteriorate as much
as images do; instead, smells remain vivid, like a refuge for memory. As Walter
Benjamin pointed out, “A scent may drown years in the odour it recalls”. This
collection appeals to the need to interpret scent correctly, to go beyond its virtual
immateriality to sensitise the immediate, like a musical performance. Eugenio Merino
ironically represents it when he sculpts the collector kneeling with a reproduction of
Manzoni’s Artist’s Shit, thus multiplying its impossibility and paradoxical nature. But
beyond the conceptual play, scent has no limits, especially in this collection where the
visual is interpreted and distilled through a kind of sense orgy.
We can think about the theories of Michel Serres, for whom the history of
science is subjected to turbulence; that is, it is subjected to random connections
of all kinds among different areas. The viewer standing before the works in the
olorVISUAL collection is also witnessing a kind of drift. Meantime, a series of
quotes, texts mostly written by the authors of the works, give us hints as to what
they aim to tell us, brief texts that reveal obsessions, sometimes more literal,
other times more poetic, like a chaotic walk where experience reigns supreme.
Perhaps because of all of this, there is no centre to the exhibition; all angles and
directions are valid when deciding on the way to take through it. The exception is
the starting point, where the figure of the collector holding Artist’s Shit accompanies
premises like the one proposed by Joan Brossa, that perfume is the confetti of the
nose, or that ideas can be smelled, as projected by the work by Eugenio Ampudia.
Scent becomes like a solid, iron root, like the landscape sculpted by Martín
Chirino, although paradoxically it becomes fluid, like the trace of magenta that is
diluted like the scent of Tom Carr. As Juan Luis Moraza notes, the nose occupies
the centre of the universe and the aura exists in the olfactory sense.
I believe that it is easier for something to smell of the past than of the future.
To Miroslaw Balka, the smell of the past is concealed in the scent of materials, of
sculptures. Balka thinks about the scent of Christmas tree pine needles, or a bar of
soap, or rubber. Scent as the trigger of memory is a dangerous knot. Like that which
Jorge Perianes uses to engage an apple that does not smell with a tree growing out of
the wall. It is an illusory reality yet also a synaesthetic one, since we can see it.
Balka’s and Perianes’ materials are simple and everyday, but more than
anything they are a resonance of memory. I believe that they somehow sketch
an erotic connection with death, like in Bataille’s philosophy, a death that is
paradoxically the scent of existence. It is as if progress ended up devouring
us, heralding the end even before beginning. Not a few works smell of difficult
times, like the harsh, elegant winter offered by Eva Lootz. The artist points out
how copper does not smell, but the hand working with it does. In her work, snow
is drawn like skin and the sky as frozen silence. This work, like the ones by Balka
and Perianes, inspires in us a kind of nostalgia for nature. We can also notice it
in the cigar and smokeless pipe by Chema Madoz. Or in Robert Mapplethorpe’s
bare flower, surrounded by smoke, which holds up without wilting, like a
youthful, apollonian, serene body. The sexual connotations are obvious, as
they are in the bouquet of roses by Juan Hidalgo, which are accompanied by a
mirror and a condom. But Tony Matelly’s work is clearly where the eternal takes
on the most significance, falsifying weeds and stressing, in this case, the character
of abandoned site that comes to mind when thinking about the revival of this
space of La Tabacalera.
133
I am reminded of the stories by Maurice Blanchot which disorient us in their
variability because they harbour a non-fictitious time, the time of the experience
of the conformation of shapes veering towards the unknown. They are forms
that vibrate, material resonances that smell, just like the geometry of Equipo 57
or Mark Francis’s dance to chaotic rhythms. Because even when it seems to have
stopped, time is experienced here. In Blanchot it is the time of the unheard-of,
or the darkness or, more specifically, the absence of time or the present without
presence. Hence the disturbing quality to the oil on burnt canvas by Bianca
Beck. The artist is speaking to us about birth, silence, tears, a flower that opens
and gives off scent, an ardent love. Fire and desire. Just like the oil painting on
wood by Anne-Lise Coste. Everything accumulates, concentrates, spills over.
The artists try to project a reality based on small densities, like the condensed
memory of Fernando Prats, or the smoke that concentrates the navel of the
world according to Eulàlia Valldosera.
Meantime, night falls and the landscape changes its face. The darkness
devours colours and the visible is hidden in the forest. The work by Claudia
Terstappen smells of the night. The denizens of the night develop the acuteness
of a nocturnal animal. At night we open ourselves to the unknown, to extreme
violence. Light constructs reality and freezes places, as in the video Inercia by
Carlos Irijalba. The boulevard becomes a bustle of vagabonds, as claimed by
Lamazares’ painting. The main character in the work by Bernardí Roig enters
the light like someone revealing a confession and encounters the divine. Our
face burns, like the characters by Douglas Gordon. With no nose and no eyes,
the fire snuffs out our senses. Like a road to destruction. The image, just like life,
is suspended, interrupted. And so we have reached the statues of our ancestors,
the outcome of an involuntary beauty that resembles the supposed aggression of
the pyromaniac. Works like those by Douglas Gordon and Valentín Vallhonrat
make us think about the beauty of the body eaten away by time in classical
sculpture. We love them in their broken beauty. We do not try to remember or
imagine the colour of so many polychromatic statues which have reached us.
An attractive abyss, that of the ruin of things, that of beauty decapitated by
iconoclastic acts, as Marguerite Yourcenar wrote.
The same holds true with the journey of darkness. The forest passage
recounted by Jünger, the ambush, is a march towards death. Darkness in this
sense is a kind of ending whose culmination is this fate. Irijalba and Lamazares
tell about the passion of transit. But Jünger’s forest talks to us about the
impossibility of going further, of shipwreck and darkness. It is no surprise that
the subject is thus revealed as a fragment in the case of Douglas Gordon, or as the
corrosion of the cadaverous body in Enrique Marty.
Almost one decade ago the person who wrote this sent Bernardí Roig a
letter to be read blindly. The artist had confessed to being afraid of the lack
of answers. Naturally, he was talking about life, but he was especially talking
about that shadow with an expiring passport which is death. Although he was
surely talking more about hope, that sort of antechamber. It is difficult for me to
imagine his characters going directly from one place to the other. In any event,
they find meaning in beating around the bush, like Lamazares’ vagabonds or
Irijalba when he manages to turn reality into a representation of itself.
At night, nothing is projected more than the light and smell of death. Enrique
Marty offers a sculpture which depicts a putrefied body found in a marshy
area very close to the water. The bodies that remain in this wet state, with
their entrails exposed, take on the qualities of the land, begin to mimic it and
give off a very particular odour. The same is true of Barceló’s still life, which
shows a suspended corporality, a bronze skewer that smells dry. Depicting the
134
estrangement of the body is like depicting death. Barceló builds his imagination
in that indeterminate zone and effects a change in order, like when the figure in
Bacon breaks with the figurative. It is a challenge to anatomy, and everything
becomes a single shape, an enigma which is proffered as a perceptive fissure, as
a sensation. Just as in Bacon, there is a zone of indiscernibility, as Deleuze would
say, where everything tends to escape. But at the same time, I understand that
works like those by Marty and Barceló are close to the eroticism that Bataille
tells about. To the latter, death is the greatest violence since it uproots us from
our obstinate desire to watch our own discontinuousness last. Here, death as
regeneration is a kind of eroticism, in this zeal to cross all boundaries. Bataille
speaks of how after decomposition new forms of life arise tout court. In both
cases, the viewer enters an intimate space, one where we can smell more than we
can hear. The image is a murmur. Death agony is depicted, as with Christo and
his wrapped bouquet of roses. It is not life everlasting conserved in a vacuum but
immanent death by asphyxiation or the impossible capture of the ephemeral.
That relationship with the ephemerality of existence appears in Javier Arce’s
depiction of Ophelia; on his series of pressed papers he draws celebrated works in
the history of painting with a marker on paper. Ophelia, inexpressive, deranged
by love, is formalised as a brief mark, as a vague, fugitive form about to vanish.
Arce starts with the celebrated painting that John Everet Millais rendered on this
Shakespearian myth. They are streaks that shape and permeate everything with
their scent, just like the works by Antoni Muntadas or Perejaume. In the latter,
it is the scent of the sound of a spring burbling. Surely it is always different, but
with the capacity to always seem the same. Like the flavours of childhood, like the
scents of the past. Perejaume paints the traces of what the burbling spring marks,
the ergography of its own sound, its own writing. Water here is synonymous with
life and allows a space of the imaginary to be built, as in a dream. Painting reveals
a reality of fleeting outlines, something that we can detect in works like those by
Herbert Brandl, Albert Oehlen, Adam Fuss, Tim White-Sobieski, Helmut Dorner,
Juan Uslé and the aforementioned Perejaume.
I am thinking about how Monet abandoned the technique of drawing to focus
on colour, on that fusion of form and background which characterised him. That
balanced tension gains momentum in the work of Cézanne, where the materiality of
the pigments comes to the fore. The ‘reserves’ or empty parts which can be glimpsed
amidst the white of the canvas in some of Cézanne’s unfinished portraits mean that
his brushstrokes never seem definitive. Herbert Brandl also perches in that ambiguous
position, since many of his works could be considered figurative, but many of them
also allude to an abstraction resulting from their dissolution in colour. Somehow, we
could talk about control and lack of control in his work, because Brandl explores the
surface, density, volume and, in short, a process that he views as an ongoing interactive
reaction; first space, then ink, and later the spatiality of the surface… Brandl wonders
when we have control over a painting and confesses that his interest revolves
around being able to face it, and letting it surround or envelop him. Brandl
advocates the gestural and surprise, so he makes use of the characteristic of ink,
its fluidity. In his works, just as in those by other artist friends of his with whom
he has shared exhibitions, such as Helmut Dorner, we can claim that he ‘puts
the paint to work’ so that the shape emerges. Thus we understand why Dorner
has entitled the text that accompanies his work ‘el paseo’ or ‘the stroll’, narrating his
poetic peregrination. These artists view painting as an act and a process, like Juan
Uslé, Albert Oehlen, Jessica Stockholder, etc. Like the revelation of the water in Adam
Fuss, full of beauty and mystery. He needs no advanced technology, no camera; his
language is nature. Like Dorner and Brandl, he harbours a great deal of romanticism.
We wonder where the figurative ends and the abstract begins, or vice-versa.
135
These are artists who examine the timeless, the invisible. In many of them,
just as in Monet’s works, the image emerges from the background. Light
constructs and dematerialises at the same time. Reality seems alien, as in
the video by Tim White-Sobieski, a New York-based artist with Polish roots
who explores the painterly possibilities of the moving image by examining
the advances in visual representation. Shapes tend to blur in the rhythmic
succession of images which accompany a sound piece that provides the
rhythm. In the video, images and scents act as resonances or vibrations of
different realities that we find in the air and water. It is not too far from what
Juan Uslé’s painting reflects. With photography almost always present in his
process of visual construction, either as an invisible support or as an explicit
technique in recent years, Juan Uslé works with painting as a means of
representing the intellectual and vital record of reality. In the text written for
the work Bonues Words, he tells how he left the yard and headed to the pool,
and how the liquid became denser and harder to go through. That seems like
a fantastic metaphor not only for the pictorial, but also for the dream and that
relationship with water that Bachelard described so well. It is the energy that
condenses and yet displaces the referents; dynamism. Uslé, who examines
like no one else the dialogue between the frantic pace of reality and the ‘self ’
which is diluted in vision, constructs a painting that is articulated in open series
which outline a discontinuous, fluid process, always based on saturation and
transparency, as well as an almost manneristic passion for gesture which harks
back to the expressionist roots of his painting. His is a painting of contrasts,
from the most fragile to the most robust, from light to thick, from the speed
of some brushstrokes to the slowness of others that betray a tense look at the
painting. Thus, each painting is a kind of pictorial threshold that contains an
unreachable message, a place of inwardness which in the light is the key figure
to generate that state of transition, that painting in the guise of an event,
similar to what we feel when we watch the video by Tim White-Sobieski or
gaze upon the wonderful garden painted by Albert Oehlen. In the latter, we
get the same feeling as in Monet of the absence of the horizontal line, as if
we were literally in the garden or the pond, permeated with its scent. Oehlen’s
painting is a dance that is simultaneously convulsive and gentle, labyrinthine
like the perfumed, primeval garden of Antonio Saura.
These works are inspired by nature and assume both the specific and the local, like
the works by Fernando García and Mayte Vieta. The silence of dead flowers bursting
with colour is what joins them with other still lifes, like the ones by Nuria Fuster and
Jannis Kounellis. Before them we feel outside time, and silence is contained as matter,
which takes on a radical presence. In all of them there is a respect for composition
and its traditions. A pictorial space takes shape, and materiality and its relationship
with architecture tauten, the space is planned and formalised through the objects.
The scent of colours appears on the threshold on the unspeakable. It
does so suddenly, as if it was violating the border of the impossible without
manipulating the matter, but instead letting it manifest itself. The temptation
of silence does not prevent space from being set to music, as happens in the
geometric burlap by Mark Hagen, which smells of earth and wood. Or the
poetic thread in the ambiguous painting by Richard Aldrich. The paint vanishes
like a smell, like colour, like Víctor Pimstein’s image about to be extinguished.
Painting, and sculpture, are an exercise of emptying, as if the goal were to find
the essential scent. We can see this in the box by Txomin Badiola, as well as in
the trembling painting by Jürgen Partenheimer, where colour produces a given
effect depending on its formal organisation and each individual’s psychology. But
if colour is important in Partenheimer’s works, so is drawing, or more accurately
136
the act of drawing as the product of the direct connection between the body
and mind. Just like the fluid yellow of his paintings, his drawings do not seek
depth but instead remain on the surface in order to blur the boundaries and
liberate themselves from the space they occupy. This is an undefined aspect that
is accentuated with the erased lines that nonetheless still remain, which remind us
that everything is a process and that there is no precise end. This interest in zones
of uncertainty acts metaphorically as an affirmation of our subjugation to time.
We are left with the same intensity and uncertainty in the paintings by
Günther Förg and the photographs by Aitor Ortiz, Anna Malagrida and Vik
Muniz. In all of them, we can witness a conflict between the figurative and the
abstract. In the case of Muniz, this can be seen directly in the freezing of a
brushstroke, in the gesture of painting, which was an important achievement for
the future of painting when Roy Lichtenstein decided to do it decades ago. All
the spontaneity associated with the gesture is subverted in an indirect, cold and
calculated process of a slow, fine brushstroke which is also comparable to the
representation of any object. From this we can deduce, and this is not a minor
matter, that the brushstrokes in Lichtenstein or Muniz are no longer abstract
and are instead comparable to any other figurative motif, thus breaking the
figuration/abstract dichotomy and becoming simultaneously a pictorial sign
and artistic icon. Meantime, proposals like those by Günther Förg, Aitor Ortiz,
Deva Sand and Sean Scully are a latent experience about the world which is
also asked of the viewer. It is curious how the contrast between what light hits
and what is abandoned dominates. In all of them, there is a kind of interstitial
tension common to views that seek the margins, the boundaries. The view is lost
and the mystery is concealed, even though everything is there, simplified. They
are works that absorb a weight, that emphasise the opaque.
Faced with these works, we might think about Friedrich’s seas of fog, or
about the chaotic density of Constable’s studies of clouds. In the words of Didi-
Huberman, “when seeing means feeling something that ineluctably escapes us:
in other words, when seeing is losing”. This abysmal condition can also be seen
in the work of Jason Martin or the dark vertigo of the work by Peter Halley. It is
the image as experience, strange and yet familiar at the same time. As if the goal
were to reconstitute the poetic substance as image. The limits of sensation are
passed, exceeded, projected to serve the vibration. Something like a rhythm that
is freed by being unfrozen, a deformation without moving from the place that
reminds us of the reflection of glass in Bacon’s paintings, as he tried to bring the
viewer and his or her context into the argument of the image. But here the goal is
not to reflect the viewer but to try to get different vantage points. With this game,
this idea of the window in Förg or Malagrida, of the cell in Halley, of the wall in
Sand or Scully, the boundaries between inside and outside become blurred.
In other cases, the window opens to nowhere and the perceptive logics that
historically characterise painting are dismembered. This is the case of Ignasi
Aballí and José Pedro Croft. In both cases, there is a dialogue between the
dynamic and the static. Smells evaporate, from transparency in the former and
from hidden colour in the latter. It is curious how the idea of place, the position of
the sight, is reaffirmed through architectural drawing. It is similar to trying to fold,
unfold and refold the image, a way of playing with margins and fragments, with
disorders and perversions, until reaching an interesting state of ‘suspension’.
We are talking about painting, a kind of painting where time is experienced.
Works like those by Jessica Stockholder show the complex relationship between
the illusionistic space of painting and the physical presence of sculpture. Like
in the works by Jonathan Lasker, Art & Languaje, Federico Herrero and Luis
Gordillo, there is a kind of condensation of events within a painting, as if one
137
visual system were compressing another one. They are spaces that vibrate or
are optically disturbed, which act through opposition to generate superimposed
rhythms. As if they were trying to paint sound, or scent, the energy is
concentrated and accumulated until it is propagated by the painting.
If we examine the oeuvre of Jonathan Lasker, he uses his way of writing
on the canvas to deconstruct action painting, abstraction. Kevin Power has
compared Lasker’s action to what De Kooning had done before him: “What
De Kooning does to the figure, Lasker does to abstraction”. Grids and planes,
in this case, are the support and motif of the pictorial language. Of course,
we are talking about language as a living organism, as the Derridian discourse
that is shaped by the marks which are capable of surpassing the linearity of
writing. We are witnessing a kind of painting that tends to the extreme and is
neo-Baroque in this sense. Even though we are used to labelling the exuberant
and heavily-laden as Baroque, this kind of overflow of the motif, this effusiveness,
is what justifies the adjective. Contemporary painting is predominantly a
hybrid; it increasingly tends toward hybridisation, collage, the dissolution of the
disciplines, the combination of the digital and the analogical. We can see this in
artists who interrupt the natural rhythm of the painting and spark imbalances,
such as Luis Gordillo. Others like Federico Herrero reproduce the turbulent,
explosive state of our architectural reality. In many cases, the painting becomes
an almost savage battlefield full of Deleuzian superimpositions and distorted
perspectives, plays of scale, tensions, swerves and folds. A dense surface of
information, at times surrealistic and delirious.
This kind of surrealistic delirium also occurs in the landscapes devised by
artists like Katinka Bock and Rebecca Horn. In the former, the materials from
the household environment shape a landscape dominated by water, halfway
between the traditions of Arte Povera and Minimal Art. Meantime, the landscape
shaped by Rebecca Horn is more closely related to emotional fragility and
human vulnerability, as she works with a discourse heavily laden with poetry
and symbolism, along with subtle movements. Her works have engines and a
mechanical precision that contrast with the intimacy of her conceptual proposals.
It should come as no surprise that to accomplish this, Buster Keaton is a key figure
in her oeuvre to the extent that she studied the development of his movements,
bold and daring, yet also machine-like, exaggerated, involuntary. Thus her
painting are machines, strange objects with subtle, often brusque movements, not
too distant from the scenarios of confrontation of contemporary society.
Post-modern architecture and design show what has been defined as the
nostalgia for the present. In this sense, what inevitably comes to mind is
the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner, which is framed as a forewarning which
could be understood as a symptom of the end of history, with characters
that embody the loss of the possibility of living and experiencing actively.
What it shows is a future that can only be represented with stereotypes of the
past, a post-historical, style-less future not too far from what Claudio Magris
describes regarding the eclecticism of Budapest. Magris harbours no hope for
refuge and appeals to the need to inhabit this fragmented world. It reminds
me of the sensitive cartography of Guillermo Kuitca, the aggrieved face
of Carmen Calvo or the tattooed history of Zhang Huan. It also reminds
me of how Charles Sandison uses computer technology to create his videos
and installations. In this way, he creates possibilities to structure forms based
on signic conventionalisms, in the guise of the word, DNA sequences and
programming languages, and he uses the result as a means of reflection
on particular realities related to the world in which we live. The subjective
experiences of a world understood as a construct external to the subject
138
appear at all times. We can detect something similar in Zhang Huan, or in the
Baroque-ism of Wolfgang Tillmans drawing from Arcimboldo, in Carmen
Calvo and in the work of Kuitca.
As this happens, we continue to feed the ruin with a constructive abyss,
always without time to reflect on our condition, on our identity. Meantime,
Lewis Mumford wonders: “Will the city disappear or will the whole planet turn
into a vast urban hive? – which would be another mode of disappearance”.
The result would not be far from those hackneyed news items on hurricanes
and Wall Street actions posed by Andrei Roiter or the scent of explosions and
fireworks ironically dealt with by Pedro G. Romero. Or the representations of
representations that Simeón Saiz Ruiz designs. Simeón Saiz Ruiz does not start
with photographs of reality but with the impossible photography of media like
television, and he shares a paradoxical premise with artists like Luc Tuymans:
the static image remains in the memory longer than the moving image.
The impossibility of retrieving that image, its finiteness and disappearance,
accumulates meanings whose mental equivalent develop, which does remain and
is increasingly in motion. We are talking about a painting of ideas, a painting
that is not at all innocent, that is capable of transmitting the incongruence of
the world of the media, its virtual veracity. We are also talking about a kind of
painting that emerges from a slow process: first he photographs the television,
then the resulting image is photographed again several times to be precisely
extrapolated onto the canvas, reproducing each pixel with its exact chromatic
values. The concrete seems to melt into a kind of abstract tapestry, but the
memory of violence does not; it remains intact. In the works by Simeón Saiz
Ruiz, the scene gets back the narrative and informative capacity of the painting
of history, even when it is done based on a criticism of the current mechanisms
through which information is transmitted.
In short, it is as if progress ends up devouring us. We might think about
the Klee painting Angelus Novus and the words of Walter Benjamin: “It depicts
an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he
is fixedly contemplating (…) His face is turned toward the past. Where we
perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe that keeps piling
ruin upon ruin and hurls it in front of his feet (…) The storm irresistibly
propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of
debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.” That
progress is a kind of contemporary abyss which can be seen in art through
colour, through form, but also through scent, that which smells and that
which is imagined. Because all bodies have smells to which they are joined by
an umbilical cord, that of sensation.
The Smell of Art
The senses are the most reliable medium through which to understand the
meaning of the artwork. In contrast to reason, the senses offer us veracity.
139
It is not the object that possesses value, but our experience of it, of what it gives:
smell, touch, colour, taste…
Hence the force of Piero Manzoni’s Artist’s Shit resides not only in its
conceptual facet but in our physiological mechanism of perception.
The temptation for any collector would be to open it to make sure that the
piece is real and its content is as stated on the label. All the more so if the
collector is a professional perfumer. Then the value of the art would be in its
fragrance or stench.
The can is only a conceptual game, the experience is in the interior.
But it is not always possible to experience the work without destroying it.
Herein lies the paradox.
Joan Brossa
Perfume is the confetti of smell.
Martín Chirino
Martín Chirino’s sculpture has its roots deep in the Spanish tradition. Martín
Chirino feels indebted to tools as a human extension of his sculpture. He known
that iron, like all things mineral, has to be torn from the belly of the earth. ‘Here is
where my work starts from. In the unstable ground I tread it is a solid reference.’
The roots are the return of the aerovores to the ground. Their horizontality
prevails and retains the form, which escapes at the sides in an equilibrium matured
on the ground. It is a return to the origin. The earth appears once more, not by
means of the tools, but by way of the human eye, the eye that observes and takes
pleasure. Insular austerity is joined by pantheism, communion with the landscape,
a Romanticism with Central European roots.
According to Martín, landscape smells of earth, of roots …
Eugenio Ampudia
It is time to take action
You think with the whole body. A thought is worthless, it is not true, if it is not
nourished by all of the senses. We need reliable data in order to fashion clear
and forthright ideas, capable of achieving the maximum possible depth in the
minimum space, capable of igniting the spark of a transformative action. It is
not enough to get used to sniffing life, to following trails, to perceiving signals
and reading signs. We have to go beyond the experienced. Smell is more than a
chemical sense detected by sensors in that cells that transmit electrical signals to
the brain. Smell supplies signals prior to sight, to hearing, to touch. Its mystery
is profound. It is linked to areas of the brain where associative reasoning takes
place and where emotions roam. Ideas can be smelt. In their essence.
Tom Carr
With this sculpture I have tried to give body and color to the evocation of an
odor. It is a work that occupies space without touching earth and which seems
140
to intersect itself lightly with the wall while suggesting the other part. Its form
is organic, fluid and insinuates movement and a lack of gravity. It is painted in
a gentle and total degradation that starts with an intense magenta purple that
saturates itself till it reaches white. This emanation of form and color dilates into
nothingness to make evident that it comes to be an infinitesimal part of the Whole.
in necessity, or in inevitability. The acrostic is simple. What is hidden in the
sun mask is the mask of an imposture, the tragicomic sign of the farce (ever
greater) of a god, of a king, of a law: the clan of the circle: the circus of the
master, the institution of the supposed necessity of a caprice, of a particularity.
In this universe where the limbs are verse, it’s all about everything but
indifference. In fact, there is nothing more evaluative than smell: each one is a
judgement, and its extravagant precision convenes an ethics of the intrinsic and
the alien. The acronym KKK thus relates the linkages between the bubbles,
between the heliocentric systems of each nose. A star chart gives the relative
position of the planets of our solar system for the time and place of birth of one
of those nasal appendages that configure the transition from the sublime to the
ridiculous, and make it reversible: the satires of Swift and Orwell embody a more
profound vision than a whole library of social anthropology books.
The nose is at the centre of the universe, and of Classicist heliocentrism: the
centrality of smell, by means of a reactive formation that appeals to the visible. Like
the hands, the nose deals with invisible objects, it notes the heat, the way everything
trembles, it walks the path of the space. But unlike the gaze, which touches from a
distance, holding the other at bay, smell makes the other present in every breath. This
is what is unbearable for classicism, which fantasizes about a transcendental ethics,
about the beauty of indifference, about a deodorant gaze. Classicism inflates a whole
reactive bubble in its effort to overcome the stench of the alien, unable to avoid, with
each breath, the silent touch of a sense dismissed as minor, animal. This is why it has
traditionally thought of intuition as foresight, when it is something that has nothing
to do with seeing. It is rather smell, touch sensed, not a vision of what has yet to be
seen. Those who look are accustomed to a distant, unattainable world. Images speak
remotely, and even of the remote. Smell dwells in the immediate, but also in the depth
of air that speaks of the remote in a way that is not remote. Aura exists in smell.
But in addition to its sensory properties, the nasal appendage is also the essence of
the mask. Considered an ‘appendage’ it is defined from the outset as a supplement,
as an accessory of the face that declares its substantial character. In effect, this
appendage it what creates most contact, what is most immediate, what should not be
stuck any old where. This mime of sensitivity has all the qualifications to be the object
par excellence. We are dealing with an obstacle, with the evidence of the obstacle; but
also with a lapse and an identification: it constitutes the surface of a return, a loop.
The circus of consciousness in which the anonymous is the subject. As an appendage,
the nasal is at once self and non-self. You are your nose, but not entirely; and this
contradictory pertinence among parts and whole has made the nose a complement:
face and mask, body and antibody destined never to come into contact without
fear of total disintegration. Red from cold or heat, from shame or shamelessness,
from emotion or from alcohol, the clown’s nose essentializes humanism by
turning weaknesses into prerogatives, perhaps not assented to, but consensual.
The pathetic is the clown become censor, executor. If we contemplate the crowd
141
that we are, we see that, like a poetic composition in which the initial letters of
the lines form a word, the sum of nasal appendages configures a peculiar acrostic.
We are that acrostic universe in which the extremities are verse.
Artificiality and reification, apples that have no smell. An imperfectly
assembled reality, the fragments crudely held together by precarious ropes
and knots. The scattered senses and the brain spending all their time on vain
attempts to fit pieces and complete puzzles with unrelated reasons. We force
the pieces, jamming them together, deforming and ruining them: it doesn’t
matter! If the communication works the image will work, what more could
we hope for? Our perceptions are manifestly illusory, as science now finally
confirms: reality is illusory. Prop it up (tie it up): our daily task (the modern
Sisyphus); deforming it is not a problem for us. Manipulating signs and
symbols is still relevant, may even be the most necessary task, or the perhaps
preferable benefits of illusion.
What is the difference between a weed and a normal plant?
The plant probably comes from the nursery and is exactly as the gardeners
envisaged it. Beautiful, with no surprises.
The weed, on the other hand, came into being without control or permission,
no one put it there for any reason, its presence insinuates itself into our lives
without prior acceptance.
The weed overcomes the prohibition, and its soft yet wild aroma hybridizes in
the environment, camouflaging itself.
This presence ceases to be furtive in transforming itself into a bronze icon. An
icon that turns the ‘not allowed’ into eternity.
WOLFgANG TILLMANS
Over the years Tillmans’s photography has addressed a wide range of genres
and contents, often including the portrait. Taken as a whole, his artistic
practice leaves us with the idea of an extensive work in progress whose driving
force is a constant questioning and recontextualizing of all the constituent
elements of photography. It is not surprising, then, that the work entitled
Anders, Brighton Arcimboldo should have been inspired by the painting of the
great Mannerist artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
The relationship between man and his natural environment and the senses
involved in that relationship were recurring themes of the Mannerist art of the
second half of the sixteenth century. But Arcimboldo’s work has in its poetics
another mechanism that points directly to the Baroque and makes it even more
interesting in Tillmans’s eyes: the perpetual combination of its constituent
elements, which in itself ensures an infinite number of possibilities.
If we look at the relationship between the olfactory sense and the works of
Arcimboldo, there is undoubtedly a direct connection … and Tillmans’s work:
does it smell?
GUILLERMO KUITCA
This work by Guillermo Kuitca represents the map of a woman’s face.
Kuitca’s interest in mapping things does have not its origin in the desire to
offer us any kind of geographic information; what he really wants is for the
cartographic elements to take on a descriptive capacity which goes beyond the
merely geographical. The construction of a language that goes beyond the map
and is based on the grid and nodes.
Maps of the sensibility and the senses, an analytical journey towards and
through the senses by way of a woman’s face which tracks places that are all
but unknown.
This work evokes the particular smells of these rarely visited places, the smell
of wet mud of almost untrodden paths, scents of moss rising from limestone
moss and of the toadstools born at the base of the trunks of hundred-yearold
trees. Perfumes that are found contained in a thick fog like the bottle that
contains the essences of the unexamined.
Deconstructing, dissecting, breaking down, blurring and mapping are
constant practices in the work of Guillermo Kuitca, exercises of meticulous
analysis that evoke and recreate traces of the past.
The Smell of Tomorrow
Used news will smell like a windowless, dusty waiting room, with some
broken furniture, books and papers on the table, dead computers on the floor.
From behind a wall comes the muffled sound of a radio mumbling about
hurricanes, elections, Wall Street numbers, melting ice, football victories,
oil prices, Hollywood gossip, forest fires, horsemeat, corrupted clowns and
lost alpinists. An earthy scent of forgotten events and faraway travels will fill
the space.”
Simeón Saíz Ruiz
What is most easily recognized in the image are the bare branches on which no
bud has yet appeared and the earth, reddish, with no green stem.
We are in winter and it must be cold. A cold that contains the smell but can
also easily expand it in the flow of vapours emanating from the frozen earth as
the sun warms it.
We certainly smell damp earth; the darker areas of the picture undoubtedly
accentuate the smell. Only after looking carefully at the picture and unpacking
the meaning of certain forms, interpreting them as fallen bodies—it’s impossible
that they could simply be reclining bodies—we will realize that what we are
really smelling is blood, if we know what spilled blood smells like.
Would it be contradictory to say that really the only thing the picture smells
of is oil paint and dammar varnish? No, one smell leads to another.
‘If all things turned to smoke, the nose would be the discerning organ.’—Heraclitus
Things are distinguished by their smell. This is a classic response when it comes
to resolving the polemic of ‘pictura ut poesis’. Smell makes them real. Artifice is
nothing but a mechanism in pursuit of that smell. The deception works when it
arouses the nose.
Love, courtly love, comes from the same debate. While painting and poetry
seek to possess the reality, that erotic ghost, the real presence of the smell of
145
the loved one is heightened precisely by their absence. Solutions with which
Renaissance aesthetics laid the foundations of the Baroque: since it is love
that moves reality, we should ‘marry’ the arts: music and poetry, drawing and
poetics, etc.
When I proposed to take the mascletà firecracker extravaganza as a narrative
model for drawing up a balance, autobiography, review of the things I had been
doing in the world, artistic operations, experiences and so on, I knew I would
have to add all sorts of documentary information: texts, photographs, sounds,
videos, etc. The direct experience was missing.
I have seen the mascletàs broadcast on television, heard them commented on the
radio and in real time on the Internet, but these representations all lacked the sense
of smell, an intense stench of gunpowder.
At times the memory of the ear-splitting noise of the mascletàs brings the
smell of gunpowder back to me.
Just as courtly love was sublimated as ‘smell’ in Cavalcanti’s poetry, those
Baroque marriages renewed it by summing energies: in the long romance
there appeared, for a moment, enjambed among the infinite sum of verses, the
memory and smell of the loved one. Even as a caricature: the stink of love.
A synaesthesia caused by the vertigo of the senses, by the merciless sum of
musical rhymes, the alliteration, the word play, the punning of the concepts.
Synaesthesia seems to be the explanation that critics and scientists give for that
rapture of smell experienced by the reader’s body, pragmatic datum of the
triumph of the poem.
In its modest way, this was how the representation that I outlined was meant
to work; the accumulation of images, quotations, data, photographs, signs,
videos, cassettes, sounds, texts, colours, forms, ideas, associations, games and so
on would suddenly unleash the smell of gunpowder, the aroma of childhood.
That was the idea, to propose a room, a laboratory in which the spectators
would be imbued, would get to know and, carried away by that knowledge,
be infused with a smell —of their life, of their world— evoked by the way
fragments of a biography, studies of the works of art, readings of life were
associated in the pieces. The gunpowder smell of childhood.
Amongst the forces of nature there is one whose power, although recognized,
has always been mysterious and linked to man: the night.
If during the daytime the sight is triumphant, at night the sense of smell is
supreme. It is as if during the long hours when shadows reign our nose acquires,
like the noses of certain small nocturnal animals, all of its acuteness, amplitude
and power of analysis, and can detect with a much finer discrimination the
subtle smells of bodies, plants, animals and the living world.
147
But the night also has its perfume. If for Aragon the night had the perfume
of a “great nocturnal cyclamen”, Colette had the sensation that “an invisible
gardenia, feverish and white, opens its petals in the darkness”.
The navel of the world stinks
Smoking is a practice that connects us with the instinct of feeding ourselves.
The only action that the newborn baby performs instinctively is sucking. It
smells the mother’s breast, which, induced by the nearby presence of the
baby, produces milk, which sometimes pours out and wasted before the infant
manages to take the nipple.
Smoking is, for those who have hade the vice for some time, a compulsive,
mechanical action, like any other manifestation of instinct. It is, at the
same time, an action that entails passivity, contradictory though this
may seem.
Smoking is a symbolic act. The newborn baby is nourished not only by the
milk, but also by affectivity, through physical contact with the mother. The lungs
envelop the heart, and the smoke inhaled and held there a few moments warms
it. Smoking also nourishes us affectively. Primarily, instinctively. In the long
run, however, it creates in us a need more powerful than this affect of fleeting
warmth that the smoke has had.
Anyone who smokes is surrounded by a ragged cloud, volatile ash. Anyone
who lights one cigarette after another is consuming time. Acting compulsively in
wanting to stop time. And all that remains of the action is the ash, the stub and
an aroma.
The Intangibility of Inertia
Inertia describes how the territory is not one, single and flat. At the same time,
neither are memories, and their importance is marked by the sense with
which they are connected. The memory of smells engages other, less common
parameters in this culture of ours. The sense of smell is capable visual and aural
of leaping decades in a second.
During two years of filming, the project was carried out at various locations
in the Basque Country, Navarra and Cantabria. The weather meant that the
sessions had to be reduced to two summers, in which we were frequently surprised
by thuderstorms, and the parched earth, dried out by the eucalyptus trees, sent
up a dust laden with nuances. The eucalyptus is one of the species that deplete
the soil most severely, and they grow very fast. They are cut down every summer
and sawmills abound in the area. Their smell impregnates whole valleys and that
indescribable smell accompanied us during long nights of filming.
Still-life that reeks of life
In relation to those artists who create the new world of art- the so-called impulse
of the present -on the basis of odourless artificial technologies and fantastical
imaginaries, Barceló does so “in the same way”. That is, according to the
specific manner of the Catalan contribution to the universal. In this he is like
Miró (and even the early Dalí), like Tàpies and Brossa, or amongst those of his
own generation, Amat and Perejaume, all them advancing towards the future
while traveling back to the oginal roots of the human: so we have rottenness,
a fascination for the primitive, linguistic correspondences and simple rituals, a
poor poetics of the object, crossroads of civilizations, lyrical illumination, ethical
timelessness, comic nihilism, a break with the norm; in short, a universal and
highly personal invention constituted of the highest value of difference.
The genius of Barceló, like that of these others, asks to be explained in
terms of the artistic quality of those who dig down to draw up the force of
the immensity of nothingness in order to raise it up to the heights of absolute.
His intellectual constancy, like that of these others, emerges from the ethical
radicalism of art life. Distancing themselves from analytical and linguistic
minimization and, at the same time, from rhetorical and narrative excesses,
they implode the spiritual tension in the genre. Because it is in the identity
that in the dark illuminates the darkness of clarity. At the domestic extreme,
art of the depths and as such not urban, they thus displace even geographical
mythologies towards extemporaneous sites of the contemporary, and in spite of
149
this communicational celebrated, their triumph celebrates the teIluric, organic
center where they rot with a tenacious will to exception.
Barceló magnificent sculpture speaks of more than it says, and in consequence
is my aim to note he some here some of these tensions we referred to above,
inherent in “the same way”. The classic theme of the still becomes internally
subject rather than genre, hence the choice of poor tubers in opposition to
the bourgeois rhetoric of succulent fruits. The opacity of the abstract white
on top of the rust known as the latent repose of biological disembarrassed
of vital variegations. The roughness of the material expresses its struggle for
interiorization in the face of the neutrality.
The sculpture Untitled, 2008 is a veristic representation of a decomposing body
to a greenish tone with worms of a specific kind that I have recreated, with the
intestines spilling out, giving off an exceptionally particular smell or stench,
which is the ultimate motive that prompted me to make this work.
You ask me to speak to you of the smell of the fountain of Llorà, but it is
not easy to be sure if you want me to speak to you of the real fountain or the
painted fountain. The latter, the painted fountain, in which the water makes
folds of linen as if it is bubbled up dressed and dried, most certainly has a strong
smell of tupertine and linseed oil... On the other hand, I really could not tell you
the smell of the other, the real fountain.
It is not a particularly smelly fountain. Llorà is not one of those fountains that
stink of the devil’s piss, nor is mentholated by a fragrance of aromatic animals
find this herbs... Although it is more than likely that the wild boars and other
animals find this fountain by smell, it is not the smell that take us there. Nor do
we manage to find it by sight, amid that dense growth of poplars and hazelnut
trees that box it in, but by the sound. The fountain of Llorà sounds, in fact, just
as if I were to pronounce its name to you: it is a rising and continuing sound,
like the name “Llorà”.
We know the fountain by its sound, which is difficult because it always sounds
the same, because the sound dances there like a flame, but does not change.
The music utilized in this video gives a feeling of a nature, movement, breeze of
fresh air –another words –new experiences.
At the beginning, starting with the images of the infinite waiting halls of
an airport in can be substituted by a smell of running cars, trolleys, smell
of mashinery, some sumells of a cooking food –another words –all traces of
civilization that can be felt by regular way in everyday life.
Since the concept of the film is based on juxtaposition of reality and
imagination, next part of a sense attributed is described as nature specific smells,
vibrations –again like breeze of ocena water, vibration of ocean waves hitting a
shore, smell of greenery.
The film presents two majors parts of a nature –air & water.
As you navigate through the film, changing from one state to another (from
ocean to sky, air & back) the corresponding senses are changing from calm &
tranquility to vibration, feeling of a strong wind & senses of earth. Feeling of air
can be substituted by absence of sounds and excess of oygen, fresh air.
The whole film is a movement, bouncing beween calm & quite & smells & movement.
The Subjectification and Attempted Rebellion of Smell: A Meditation on the Senses
Smell is a rather duplicitous subject which requires a great deal of consideration.
At a chemosensory level, sensations supply a living organism with universal
knowledge in a raw form. I am less interested in discussing sensations in their
raw form. Not because purity is unimportant, but because it does not contain the
romance of the human ego. Smell would not be duplicitous—or very interesting—
if it remained an immaculate conception that one’s experiences did not corrupt.
(…)
Smell tried to rebel from me not too long ago. It was an ordinarily mundane
day. I was adequately present. Smell appropriately aided my shoe from avoiding
a pile of dog shit on the sidewalk. A woman with a particular perfume passed
by. I was abruptly ripped from my current location into a sexual experience I
had more than 20 years ago? When I say ripped, I was literally tasting the flesh
of this individual in my mouth— feeling her sweat against me. Why that sexual
memory? Why that smell? Should I look this person up? Is my fate punching me in the nose?
Should I have followed the woman with the perfume? Should I have sex with her?
Smell rebelled for one split second and I was deeply suffering. You might have
had similar nostalgia being thrust upon you involuntarily.
(…)
In précis—I am everything that chemosensory interactions represent in their
purity and “I” am everything that corrupts their virginity. Smell was non-sense
until I came along and it will be non-sense again when I am gone.
Green is the colour of nature: the green of endless meadows,
the green of dense forest, the green of hidden underwater worlds.
The scent of grass, pine, algae. Green smells supernatural.
Albert Oehlen
A scent of great importance for us appeared before me, perhaps it will come
back. One has to be brave to knock on the door. Who says you will not be
welcome with open arms? But nothing is confirmed. I want to insist, when an
iron and coffee angel blocks my nose. I wake up. The lady sitting next to me on
the park bench is still asleep.
The tragic and the comic alternate here.
It is to be feared, and a coincidence may be apparent in admitting it, that in
Anguiano there is something not really European, something that may not even
be due to an Arab influence, something older.
Anguiano smells of a fall. Saving the glass from the floor as the plastic bag yet
touched the ground (I think we would never realize this with our eyes closed), the
wooden stake that serves as a base beats firm before or after, I have my doubts
the peeled tied sticks. And it rings out like an Art Blakey finish.
And back to the structure of comedy: the purpose of this whole scene is to
introduce us to the main characters and the conflict in which they live.
Mayte Vieta
Invisible, it has the virtue of surprising, it appears when you least expect
it, it incubates like the little buds of spring, like the wet smell of dew, it
bursts in just an instant, it evokes past times, faraway places, the reunion
with a loved one, absences, little particles in the air, it transports us back in
time, unpredictable.
153
The work presents itself as irregular as a beehive, inspired by nature.
Suspended in the air, it is composed of little white flowers and transparent balls
made of resin that are coupled to each other and articulate the form contained
in the space.
Ubi alium, ibi Roma is based on the image of a flower. Think of a flower and
immerse yourself in that memory.
A flower makes us associate smell with colour.
Ubi alium, ibi Roma evokes the strong and attractive construction of an expanse
of flowers. The smell they give off.
When I conceive a piece I create an aroma that I pursue.
JANNIS KOUNELLIS
All of Jannis Kounellis’s works have a great substance of odorant themes,
olfactory chemical compounds that most of the materials he works with give
off: fabrics, coal, wood and plants, among others. This piece is no exception. Its
floral character metaphorically enriches this duality between material and smell
and emphasizes this quality even more, if possible.
The burlap that is used smells woody and earthy, and the acrylic paint has no scent
RICHARD ALDRICH
Behind every memory there is a smell, and behind every form a memory.
Smell is memory’s paintbrush, which takes us from the invisible to the visible,
from the before to the after.
—Agustín Cerezales
VÍctor Pimstein
In contrast to the pallid images which we generally call “memory” , there
are privileged moments in which a perfume, an essence, overwhelms us by
surprise, dragging us violently from the place and the time we occupy to
transport us to a hidden place, to a forgotten time. The experience shakes us
with the intensity of a storm, and brandishes in the air in front of and inside
154
us the ghosts of a lost room, of a voice, of the light that illuminates other
faces, of a different air.
Thus, for an instant, we have the privilege of living simultaneously in different
times, of occupying several places at once. We defy the tyranny of the present
that enchains us day after day and we relegate it to its due importance in the
continual transit of living: that of converting our desire into memory and our
yearning into nostalgia and imagination.
During those moments life unfolds in simultaneous and contradictory
dimensions and progressions. We are simultaneously a ‘were’ and a ‘will be’. The
present becomes the body of time, the tense and vibrant surface on which the
reflections of the changing light of the skies, and the dense light that pushes up
from the depths converge. In that instant, the world takes on a corporeality so
uplifting and rich, so detailed and precise that when it passes it leaves us like cast
ways, surprised to find ourselves still alive on the very shore from which we set out.
It is strangely moving that that perfume, that intense, fleeting and volatile
essence unleashed by the storm should be none other than the key giving access
to our memory, to the most profound, most private territory of our imagination.
The memory makes use of that essence in order to make itself present, in the
way that a spirit can make use of any body to manifest itself, leaving us when it
vanishes the full and bitter taste of our own mortality.
Jürgen Partenheimer
Scent and track are one, l’ odeur des choses; it saves, enchants and repels us.
Without the sense of smell we shall never penetrate into the mysteries of
imagination. It is the flavor of all things, the olfactory codes which reveal
immediate sensuality, unsettlingly beautiful.
Txomin Badiola
The small is big was an artistic slogan of the nineties. Txomin Badiola, one of
the most interesting minimalists in the Basque Country, called this work “Small
relative I” or “Relatively small I” in 1992.
A confessed Oteiza follower and with an already consistent and coherent
work of his own, he claims the importance of the small space in itself profane
and sacred at the same time, with its natural colour and smell of chest wood
and industrial plywood, with its crossbreeding between painting and sculpture,
the image and the emptiness, the colour, the smell, the taste and the touch
everything in one. It reminds me of the physical emptiness more than of the
metaphysical one and brings to me the smell of the chest trees in spring and of
the design and do-it-yourself shops in winter The art work is sober, hermetic,
refined and cultivated.
Peter Halley
Aromas from a hillside fig grove blend with the briny sea air. Dusted with the
scent of jasmine, a breeze moves gently from sea to land amid the glowing blue
ocean fills the senses.
JASON MARTIN
Jason Martin’s works are imbued with layer upon layer of acrylic on a hard
material such as steel or aluminium, simulating a wave. He is interested in
finding the movement that emerges from the pictorial space, spatial analysis
being his primary concern. The artist himself describes his works as journeys on
which we move across the surface.
From the olfactory point of view, his work can be defined in terms of that of
the the creator of essences: each layer of pictorial material is a raw material used
by the perfumer, so that the sum of all of these would be thefinished fragrance
… an olfactory chord.
In memories, every corner, every house, every building has its own scent: one’s
childhood home, the treehouse, the schoolhouse, the church, the first house of
one’s own.
I creep furtively into the pantry. The small window by the ceiling lets in a
lone, wan beam of light from the kitchen. I am immediately surrounded by the
scent of herbs, fruit and forbidden sweets.
Like Proust’s madeleine, or Grandmother’s bedchamber, so it is in our little pantry.
Aitor Ortiz
Smell is capable of invading any kind of space. A fragrance can be as fleeting as
the coming and going of people.
Other smells, in contrast, linger as long as the presence of the people who
inhabit them. These are more complex; they are made up of successes and
failures, of fights and celebrations, of noises and of silences.
But what happens to spaces before they are lived in, before they are lived …
when they are still virgin?
Only someone who has been in these non-places knows the answer.
“Chocolate syrup seemed to me to be a great material because it was not only
easy to draw with, but it also carries a gamut of associations that makes it a very
complex material. Chocolate makes you think of love, luxury, romance, taste,
smell, obesity, scatology, stains, guilt, etc., associations that definitely short-circuit
the meaning of the original image I was drawing with the medium”.
The smell of the body, of the skin, of the paint. Painterly body, painted body;
skin and bones, picture and stretcher. Transparency, painting as non-fiction:
anti-painting, the window open to nowhere, or to the wall, to the white. Behind
there is nothing. Absence of composition, absence of gesture, absence of stroke,
absence of movement, of representation.
Given the impossibility of a perfect body, constructed, geometric, inorganic
(an-organic): skin, wrinkles, scars.
Beginning of physicality, of opacity. Smell of skin: sweat, blood, perfume, paint.
This is a piece that is in suspension and creates a dynamic situation of rotation
in addition to the vertical shift.
In so doing it creates situations that are both dynamic and static for the
regular volume.
Inside each column there is a double volume, one painted a soft yellow,
which refers to mild smells, and the other painted a deep violet, which refers to
intense smells.
A work of art is an inner search. It is, perhaps, a search into the past, into
childhood, a pursuit of our essence. And there is no more direct way to reach
the past than smell, because smells as these are the real stuff of memory.
The smells of the happiest memories of my childhood are of my
grandparents’ house, of its furniture, of its corners. My grandmother was a
tightrope walker. Her perfume was that of weightlessness, of the emotion of
the whole circus fixed on the line up on high. And also that of her kitchen, of
the pots, of the spices she cultivated like a druid in the forest of the elves. These
aromas were mixed with those of my grandfather’s workshop, also filled with the
fragrance of the forest, of the living sap, the roots, the dry leaves, the smells of
woods that came from exotic places laden with memories of other worlds. My
grandfather was a carpenter with strong hands, full of creativity, of patience, of
love for his work. With those materials he made chairs, tables and cupboards,
but he was also an alchemist in that he brought together the essences of these
materials with that of our lives, creating something that had its own new smell
but also all the others and ours, separately.
Sean Scully
I remember perfectly my second exhibition in New York, in 1982, with David
McKee: it was comprised of six large painted canvases, tremendously physical. I
worked on them until the last week.
The paintings gave off as good an aroma as they did an appearance. It was
like walking through a canyon of deep color, with the essence of oil paint filling
the entire gallery.
An exhibit with everything: ear, touch, sight, smell.
JESSICA STOCKHOLDER
‘In the course of our lives we make an infinite number of decisions. The reasons
why we live are a combination of feelings and thoughts, reason and intuition.
I don’t think that the two concepts can be separated. Colours, smells, evoke
sensations. I don’t know exactly why, but that’s how it is.
‘I work with colour, with the materials, with the composition to explore the
connections between the emotion and its intellectual response.
‘An orange fin, an industrial hook, a plank stitched to an abstract resin form,
a blue object, a green spot… the world in which I live is full of meanings. All of
this may create a feeling of discomfort, of conflict, but there’s also an optimistic,
exciting vision that comes from the possibility of something new, something
fantastic emerging.
‘Perhaps without realizing it, I also work with smells… with my olfactory
memories. Can it be true?’
—Extract from a conversation between Jessica Stockholder and Alberto de Juan
Art & Language
These paintings belong to the genre that takes up the lowest rank among
the traditional genres of painting. The most home-loving and affected: the
still life. However, the still life object is a domestic and often movingly heroic
trophy. But there is a disorder here, a pictorial or representation disorder. The
painting represents a recipient, a container of liquids and that recipient in its
turn has turned into liquid. Are we before a representation of the recipient
liquefaction or before the literal liquefaction of the own representation...
or before a representation of the liquefaction representation? According to
modern art canons, in any case the represented object has become somehow
literal, has turned into a painting. But this literal substance is in fact more and
more pictorial, increasingly hysterical and virtual. The geometrical plane on
which everything rests is also distorted to make up both a spatial location of
the trophy as well as one of the material sources of the iconic disorder.
The entire image is confined—kept at a distance—behind a glass layer, a
surface reflective as a mirror. The disturbance has been processed. It takes
place in the distance. Literal turned into pictorial and pictorial turned into
literal are the target of a supervened pictorially—a remoteness—provided by
the glass.
Jonathan Lasker
For some time now the term abstraction in art has ceased to have a precise
meaning. In the work of Jonathan Lasker we experience new possibilities by way
of gestures that are repetitive but at the same time capable of generating images
that are always different. Although the abstract artist has succeeded in redefining
the possibility of letting different languages interact within a single work,
Lasker does not claim for his labyrinthine frameworks any more than the two
consubstantial dimensions of the picture plane. The dry oils no longer smell. But
there floats in the air a skein of pungent smells, electric and rhythmic.
—María Platero
Federico Herrero
The essence of art, as in the rest of the materials that make up the world, is
found in its most extreme purity, in finding a form, an idea, a colour … that it
manages to transcend. Flat colours become important pieces of that puzzle,
key elements that are associated with musical harmony, with the scent of flower
petals. The large expanses of colour in this work evoke pure smells, in their
maximum essence, that overlay each other but do not mix. It’s a real pleasure
for the pituitary, this fun chromatic combination. Perfume fresh from the
Caribbean, we distinguish the smell of tropical fruits, the idyllic beaches and the
virgin forests.
Katinka Bock
The city, the landscape, the territory and the exhibition space are central themes
in the art of Katinka Bock. Through a practice that draws on the tradition of
Arte Povera and Minimalism, Bock avails herself of organic materials, which
she uses to invoke natural and physical phenomena. In Stadt am Fluss (City on
the River) (2009) the artist combines found objects pertaining to the domestic
environment—a bucket of water, a table, a pile of cut-out drawing papers
and water—to construct a sketched poetic sculptural vision of a possible city
traversed by a river.
The contact of the water with the channel inscribed in wooden table produces a
subtle scent that enhances the organicness and physicality of the piece.
