Mascotas¿Mascotas y dueños siguenla misma dieta?Un estudio encabezado por Sydney Banton, estudiantede profesorado en el Departamento de BiocienciasAnimales de la Universidad de Georgia (Estados Unidos), harevelado que las mascotas y sus dueños hacen dieta juntos.Para llegar a esta conclusión, la investigadora ha realizadouna encuesta internacional sobre hábitos de consumo dealimentos para mascotas.“Demuestra que muchas variables, no solo los hábitos dietéticos,influyen en la selección de la comida para perros”, ha señalado lacientífica de este informe. Baton ha visto en su trabajo el ejemplode los dueños que consumen productos para celiacos. En estecaso, sus mascotas ingerirán alimentos que carezcan de gluten.Por otro lado, las personas que no incluyen productos con fibraen su dieta habitual (cereales, entre ellos), se inclinaron por losalimentos “premium”. En caso de los encuestados que siguenuna alimentación vegetariana o vegana, será más común que susmascotas no tomen procesados. “Las marcas sin ingredientescomo el trigo constituyen más del 40% de los alimentos paraperros vendidos en Estados Unidos”, ha indicado Banton.La Dra. Anna Kate Shoveller, del Animal Biosciences y coautora delestudio de Banton, ha señalado que la industria de alimentos paramascotas tiene una fuerte influencia de las tendencias de consumodel ser humano. Para ella, los investigadores de este sectordeberían ofrecer las mejores fórmulas.“Sentimos que, para comprender mejor los riesgos asociadoscon la alimentación de una fórmula de productos para mascotassin cereales y con legumbres, habrá que ver si los dueños queeligieron esos alimentos son conscientes del riesgo en el queponen a sus perros de sufrir trastornos metabólicos secundarios,como la miocardiopatía dilatada”.Ayudar a escoger lo correctoLa investigación se realizó a través de una encuesta a 3.300dueños de mascotas de Canadá, Estados Unidos, Alemania,Francia y Reino Unido. Los participantes respondieron preguntassobre dónde obtienen su información sobre la comida para perros,cómo la adquieren y una serie de variables de mayor importanciaen sus decisiones. Alrededor del 21% ha señalado que buscaproductos que no están hechos con trigo u otros cereales comoun atributo que influye en su compra. Los dueños de perros enAlemania mostraron la mayor preferencia por esta alimentación,con un 30%, seguido por un 27% en Estados Unidos, un 22% enCanadá y un 8% en Francia.Aunque algunos dueños de mascotas dan a sus perros losproductos pertenecientes a una dieta similar a la suya, Bantonno comprende por qué los vegetarianos y veganos siguen esecomportamiento. La alimentación vegetariana y vegana permiteel consumo de productos integrales como parte de una dietasaludable, pero muchos dueños creen que no lo son para losperros."Ellos son los que toman la decisión en la tienda de mascotas", haseñalado Shoveller .
