EN PRIMERA PERSONA IN FIRST PERSON
grave problema y poco podemos hacer frente a él.
–“Made in”, “made by”, “CE”...
Eurom
promueve el “Made by”.
China. El “Made by” da garantía, no el país en el que se haya hecho. Es
decir, da garantía el fabricante, no el lugar. Es un concepto que intentamos
impulsar. Ya podemos poner “Made by”; otros ponen distributed o
produced by o CE o Designed.
For Antoni Olivella, the five strategic
values of INDO can be summed up as
internationalisation, innovation,
productivity, organisation and workforce.
-How does Eurom protect the interests of
European optics manufacturers? What
actions does it take for custom controls to be
effective and allow only truly certified products
to reach Europe?
-There is a very serious problem of uncontrolled
product imports. I should say that it’s
going to be extremely difficult to have effective
control of all products coming to Europe.
In a Eurom meeting in Hamburg, seeing 10-
12 ships in the port with fourteen thousand
containers which are unloaded in under 24
hours, you wonder who controls what comes
in. It’s impossible. Only in Spain, 23 million
sunglasses have entered without any controls.
-What is the role of Eurom regarding this situation?
-We must promote true controls on the arriving
product. Since this can’t be done at the
borders, because it reaches the port and is
automatically distributed without any monitoring,
the product must be controlled by sampling
or in the point of sale, and millionaire
sanctions should be imposed on offenders. In
the case of sunglasses, how are the pieces sold
in the black market to be controlled? This is a
serious problem and there’s little we can do
about it. As for prescription glasses and ophthalmic
lenses, there have been reports on
products which didn’t meet European standards,
and they were withdrawn from the
warehouses of some distributing companies.
- What’s your own assessment in your six
months as the president of Eurom?
-One of my biggest satisfactions is having created an efficient
Management Executive Board with the participation and financing of
all countries, with a person completely dedicated to it and presence in
Brussels. So we can say that Eurom’s work has been professionalised
in its 50 th anniversary, which we’ll be celebrating in June. In theory,
we’ve also solved the problem of Turkish custom rates and the eyewear
test to determine whether the components used are toxic. We also want
to establish a detailed eyewear and lens consumption statistics system
by country. In a word, we’ll continue defending the optics industry
with our policies.
-“Made in”, “made by”, “CE”... What mark does Eurom promote,
and which is the best for European interests?
-Some countries want to promote “Made In”. It is compulsory in the US
and optional in Europe, as long as the rules are followed regarding the
minimum manufacturing percentage. And how is this calculated? There
are intangible values such as design –the European contribution in
design is more expensive than the eyewear itself. How are these intangible
values materialised? Eurom promotes “Made by”. We believe
there is a bigger guarantee if the piece is marked as made by Silhouette,
Indo, Sáfilo, Luxottica, Essilor... than “Made in”. The product could
