l’épithète générique de spp.;
Piper aff. samanense, Psychotria sp.1, Passiflora cf. sexflora.
Les identifications de terrain ont été vérifiées
à l’aide de la flore disponible: La flore d’Haïti (Baker and
Dardeau 1930), Flora de la Española (Liogier 1981, 1983,
1985, 1986), Catalogus Florae Domingensis (Jiménez 1966;
Moscoso 1943).
field and are conserved at the National Herbarium of Haiti
(HE). They have been identified to species or morphospecies
level at the Brussels herbaria (BR and BRLU), using the floras
of the region (Baker and Dardeau 1930; Liogier 1981, 1983,
1985, 1986; Moscoso 1943; Jiménez 1966). Spelling and
synonymy of the taxa have been checked with IPNI (www.
ipni.org) and the Missouri Botanical Garden databases
(www.mobot.org). Many species are only identified to
morphospecies but for this paper we just need to know
the number of taxa. Further taxonomical studies will be
necessary for phytosociological or phytogeographical
purposes.
data analysIs
For every taxa, identified to species or morphospecies,
the biological type has been defined based on commonly
used classifications in tropical rainforests (Gentry and
Dodson 1987; Poulsen and Balsley 1991; Senterre 2005b):
canopy trees (codominant, dominant and emergent
trees), shrubs, small suffrutex (perennial herbaceous plant
with a ligneous base) and nano-shrubs, terrestrial herbs,
herbaceous root climbers, herbaceous lianas, understory
epiphytes (see also Ellenberg and Mueller-Dombois
1965). Other common biological types were absent from
the individuals sampled within our plots: hemiepiphytes,
phanerophytic woody lianas, saprophytes and parasites.
Diversity has been calculated using common diversity
indexes: S = species richness; Is = Simpson index; H’ =
Shannon-Wiener index; E = Pielou’s equitability; and Fα
= Fisher alpha diversity (Frontier and Pichod-Viale 1993;
Condit et al. 1998; Leigh and Loo de Lao 2000).
Where fi is the relative abundance of a species i and N is
the number of individuals represented by all the S species
Some of these indexes are influenced by the sampling effort
(S, H’) while others are relatively little influenced when
more than 50 individuals are sampled (Is, Fα). The Simpson’s
index is a non-parametric one and gives very low
weight to rare species while Fisher alpha index depends
on a distribution hypothesis and consider rare species,
which are an important component of diversity in rainforests.
This last index is easily calculated based just on the
number of individuals and on the number of species, and
is now widely used in tropical forest diversity studies.
Species-individuals curves are another useful tool for comparing
the diversity of different samples because it gives
the index and its evolution with sampling effort. We calculated
such curves by permuting 50 times the order of
the individuals of a selected plot or subplot in order to
get smoothed curves and confidence interval (rarefaction
curves). For this, we used EstimateS (Colwell 2004) and
considered individuals as «plots».
