« THIS WORK POSSESSES CONSIDERABLE INTEREST. It contains 26 plates of the varied and numerous
costumes of the country, with a view in the background of some important city, or scene of some late
military engagement – with a most carefully arranged map of the country beyond the Indus, and an
elaborate representation of the far-famed “Sandal Wood Gates”. We do not remember to have perused
a volume which has offered us such a general fund of entertainment and instruction as the work under
notice, without which it would be very difficult, if not impossible, for those who have not visited these
portions of country, to form the slightest idea of the mountainous ranges to the north of the British
possessions in India, or estimate the perilous march of an army which was at every step treacherously
assailed; in fact, no narrative, however well written, could convey so accurate an idea of the Passes, as
well as the Cities and Costumes, nor the singular features and astonishing peculiarities of such a
country as this series of Sketches gives. The work has been lithographed by Mr. Charles Haghe, who
has transferred the picturesque features of Afghan character and scenery with marvelous success; the
drawings are clear, definite, and brilliant, and richly deserve our approbation; and we heartily
congratulate Mr. Charles Haghe on the success of so arduous an undertaking, and trust that the
publishers of such works, sketched as they are by men of talent and high pretentions to art, and finished
on stone by the hand of “a Haghe”, may reap the golden harvest they most justly deserve”. (The

LE PRÉSENT OUVRAGE EST ILLUSTRÉ D’UNE GRANDE CARTE GRAVÉE DE LA PROVINCE DU SIND ET DE
L’AFGHANISTAN, D’UN TITRE LITHOGRAPHIÉ ET COLORIÉ À L’ÉPOQUE ET DE 26 PLANCHES GRAVÉES ET
COLORIÉES À LA MAIN À L’ÉPOQUE, LA PLUPART FINEMENT GOMMÉES.
Ces planches représentent des paysages de montagne, avec des cols et des gorges, des forteresses, mais
elles campent surtout des autochtones en costumes traditionnels.
Elles furent gravées par Charles Haghe d’après des dessins exécutés sur le vif par le capitaine Lockyer
Willis Hart lors de l’invasion de l’Afghanistan par les anglais en 1839-1840. Hart était un capitaine
dans le 22 e régiment d’Infanterie de Bombay.
Les planches montrent des vues de la province du Sind, de Dadur, de Kandahar avec son palais, de
Guznée, de Kaboul avec des scènes de la vie quotidienne (file d’aveugles mendiants, vendeur de
kebabs, …), de la forteresse de Perganeh, de Jalalabad, … On aperçoit même sur l’une des planches le
Bouddha de Bâmiyân aujourd’hui disparu. Chaque planche est dotée d’une légende en anglais.
Il existe un tirage ordinaire de cet ouvrage avec les figures en noir.
