eflect the eclecticism of the musician’s literary taste - from Theocrite to Verlaine passing
through Mme Sévigné, Goethe and even Baudelaire whose «Infinis bercements du loisir
embaumé» embellish the frontispiece of La Rose de Blida (CD 2 - tr. 5).
The Reynaldo Hahn’s best piano compositions negate the clichéd label of being a «Salon
Musician interested only in being a success in society». Piercing his exterior as a charming
dandy from within is an artistic temperament tormented by a ferocious perfectionist streak.
crannies allows an overwhelming inspiration to be transformed into a musical work and to
crystallize the allure of ineffable impressions, which without this, given their very nature,
would quickly disappear. Far from showing off, his untiring quest for true beauty, makes him
a searcher for the absolute, too.
1. As a consequence of this recording, the publisher Heugel has promised to publish that part of his compositions which have been unjustly
forgotten, collecting them all under the title Pieces d’amour et outré inedits pour piano. These fresh and spontaneous compositions should make
those pianists in love with discovering new things happy.
2. Title of a book of memories Reynaldo Hahn dedicated to Sarah Bernhardt in 1930.
