5.0 Introduction to Multilingualism
Course description:
This course provides an introduction to the sociolinguistic research field of multilingualism. The first part of the course will introduce
you to basic theoretical and methodological concepts in research on multilingualism, as well as introducing the multilingual context of
Luxembourg in particular. This part of the course will give you the analytical tools you need in order to undertake your own research
project on a topic relating to multilingualism in Luxembourg. The second part of the course will focus on multilingualism in particular
contexts, including the workplace, public spaces, youth culture and the new media. In each of these areas, you will be provided with
theoretical background and data from multilingual case studies from around the world, and be given the opportunity to engage in
critical discussion of the research findings and their application to the Luxembourg context.
Although this course is part of an English major programme, being a course on multilingualism it focuses considerably on languages
other than English. Students of other majors (e.g. French, German, history) are also warmly encouraged to enrol."
5.1 Introduction to Literary Theory and Criticism
Course description:
This course has a series of aims of which the following are the most important: we would like to encourage you to re‐examine your
own reading processes, and to question the validity of preconceived ideas about the relationship between the author, the text and
the reader or, in other words, the relationship between literature and ‘real life’. This course should also help you to realise that texts
can be approached in many different ways, and that ‘ideologies’ and our perception of reality are important factors in our
interpretations of any text."
Type of course : Seminar with students' contributions
