IMO attended the “Rio+20” Un<strong>it</strong>ed<br />
Nations Conference on Sustainable<br />
Development in Rio de Janeiro, in June<br />
2012, and explained how international<br />
shipping contributes significantly<br />
to the three pillars of sustainable<br />
development, the eradication<br />
of poverty and the widespread<br />
development of green growth.<br />
IMO also presented <strong>it</strong>s v<strong>is</strong>ion of a<br />
framework for Sustainable Mar<strong>it</strong>ime<br />
Development, and <strong>it</strong>s plans to develop<br />
Sustainable Development Goals for<br />
the mar<strong>it</strong>ime industry, focusing on<br />
eight pillars:<br />
Shipping <strong>is</strong> the most efficient and<br />
cost-effective method of international<br />
transportation for most goods; <strong>it</strong><br />
provides a dependable, low cost<br />
means of transporting goods globally,<br />
facil<strong>it</strong>ating commerce and helping to<br />
create prosper<strong>it</strong>y among nations and<br />
peoples.<br />

stewardship;<br />
2. energy efficiency;<br />
3. new technology and innovation;<br />
4. mar<strong>it</strong>ime education and training;<br />
5. mar<strong>it</strong>ime secur<strong>it</strong>y and antipiracy<br />
actions;<br />
6. mar<strong>it</strong>ime traffic management;<br />
7. mar<strong>it</strong>ime infrastructure<br />
development; and<br />
8. adoption and implementation<br />
