SCULPTURE DE FÉCONDITÉ, ASHANTI,
Ghana
Importante et rare sculpture votive représentant une pintade numide Numdida meleagris
galeata représentée symboliquement couvant. Le corps de l'oiseau est représenté avec un
plumage stylisé strié au décor incisé. Cet objet d'apparat est un objet de célèbration royale,
intimmement lié à la première Dame du Roi.
La Pintade qui couve les œufs symbolise les vœux de fertilité du couple royal avec les héritiers
à venir. Les œufs représentent les enfants du premier lit, la force et la fertilité du roi et
sa Maison perpétuée par sa lignée. L’oiseau symbolise le chef qui couve ses poussins, à la
fois oppressant et protecteur de son peuple, in Quanto il podere diventa visible, i supporti

Provenance : Ancienne collection du Docteur Malouvier (1885 - 1945), dont le remplaçant fut le
Docteur Destouche (Louis-Ferdinand Céline) en Afrique Occidentale en 1937. Evènement confirmé
par la thèse de David Labreure. « Louis-Ferdinand Céline une pensée médicale », Université Paris I,
Panthéon Sorbonne.
Par réputation aurait été obtenu par Louis-Ferdinand Céline et probablement rapporté par lui lors de
son second voyage en Afrique Occidentale en 1926 effectué pour le compte de la société des Nations
(S.D.N.) et de la mission Rockefeller, voyage dont il tirera sa seule œuvre théâtrale « L'Eglise ».
Transmise par descendance à sa famille et conservée de 1945 à 2003.
Acquise aux enchères à Cannes, lot n°554, le 6 juillet 2003, vente Cannes Enchères.

ASHANTI BRONZE,
Ghana
Important and rare votive sculpture representing a numide guinea fowl ( numdida meleagris galeata )
in symbolic nesting position. Exquisitely engraved feathers with stylized stripes. An object of splendor
and royal celebration, intimately associated to the First Lady of the King. The brooding hen evokes
wishes of fertility to the royal couple, as well as to their future heirs. The eggs represent the children
of the King’s first marriage in part, but also represent the strength and fertility of the King and the
strength of the kingdom he will perpetuate by lineage. According to Guenadalina Sertorio, in as much
as the hen represents the leader who protects his newborn offspring, he is equally oppressive as protective
of his people.
Provenance: Ex-collection Dr. Malouvier ( 1885-1945). In Occidental Africa, his replacement appears
to have been Dr. Destouche ( Louis-Ferdinand Céline ) in 1937, as confirmed in David Labreure’s thesis
“Louis-Ferdinand Céline : Une pensée médicale”, University Paris I, Pantheon Sorbonne. By reputation,
this bronze would have been obtained by Louis Ferdinand Céline and probably brought back
during his second stay in Occidental Africa, in 1926, when he was there on behalf of the Society of
Nations ( S.D.N. ) and the Rockefeller Mission, travels during wich he wrote his only play “L’Eglise”.
This bronze was inherited by the famlly and conserved from 1945-2003.
