The Brussels Group faded after the Second WorldWar, ceding their position to Cobra (an acronymfor Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam) whichreinvented a more politicised art, flirting withlibertarian poetry. The group included artists suchas Christian Dotremont and Alechinsky. It was theend of surrealism in Belgium; at least as an artisticmovement. But the surrealist spiritlived on! Seeing thefunny side of life, nottaking oneself tooseriously and stepping back from reality: every Belgianhas this in him, and has had for a long time. Nobodyis surprised for example that the symbol of Europe’scapital city is a midget urinating in the wind!Belgian surrealists? Morerebellious, more suspiciousand more ironic!Gare du Midi
