figures/DREAMS COME TRUE…/… La vocation de Bertin Nahum est née à l’hôpitalneurocardiologique de Lyon.Etudiant à l’Institut national des sciences appliquées (Insa),il contribue à concevoir un logiciel capable de détecter deslésions crâniennes à partir de scanners. « Me sentir utile a étéune révélation », se souvient-il. Après avoir fait ses classespendant dix ans au sein de grands groupes spécialisés enrobotique chirurgicale et décroché un ‘master of sciences’en robotique, il décide en 2002 de voler de ses propresailes. Montpellier l’attire par « son dynamisme, son soutienà l’innovation et la forte présence du secteur médical ». Ily fonde Medtech. Hébergée à Cap Omega, la start-up estaccompagnée pendant trois ans par le BIC de MontpellierAgglomération : « Le réseau et l’expertise de ses conseillers, lesmoyens et infrastructures mis à ma disposition m’ont apportéune réelle valeur ajoutée, souligne Bertin Nahum. C’est aussigrâce aux missions export de Montpellier Agglomération queMedtech a mis un pied aux Etats-Unis. »Entre-temps, l’entreprise a donné naissance à Brigit, unrobot destiné à aider la pose de prothèses du genou. Lavente du brevet à l’Américain Zimmer, en 2006, permet definancer le développement de ROSA : « Quand ce géant dela chirurgie orthopédique a découvert que notre entreprisecomptait quatre salariés, il est tombé des nues… », s’amuseBertin Nahum.Représentée aujourd’hui dans une trentaine de pays,l’entreprise emploie une vingtaine de salariés, répartis entreCastelnau-le-Lez, où elle a son siège, et New York. AprèsBrigit et ROSA, un nouveau robot devrait voir le jour d’icià fin 2013. Il sera spécialisé dans la chirurgie du rachis : « Lemarché est colossal : on compte 1,55 million d’interventionspar an dans le monde. » Dans cette optique, la PME a levé4,5 millions d’euros auprès de plusieurs investisseurs dontNewfund et la Soridec. Son ambition : porter de 60 % à 90 %la part de son chiffre d’affaires à l’export (2 millions d’euros en2012, 3 millions prévus en 2013). Trois marchés sont ciblés :l’Amérique du Nord, l’Asie et le Moyen-Orient. « La chirurgieassistée par ordinateur n’en est qu’à ses débuts, analyseBertin Nahum, le vieillissement de la population, l’exigenceaccrue des patients et la baisse du nombre de praticiensrendent primordiale la réduction de l’aléa chirurgical . »Les robots de Medtech ont de beaux jours devant eux.… /… Bertin Nahum’s vocation began at Lyon’s neurocardiologyhospital. After ten years training withleading groups specialized in surgical robotics, and earninghis Master’s degree in robotics, Mr. Nahum decided to set outon his own. Attracted to Montpellier for its “vitality, supportfor innovation, and significant medical sector,” he came tofound Medtech. Hosted at Cap Omega, the start-up wasassisted for three years by Montpellier Agglomération BIC.“The network and expertise of its advisors, as well as theresources and infrastructure at my disposal, provided me withsignificant value added,” says Bertin Nahum. “MontpellierBertin Nahum : « La chirurgie assistéepar ordinateur n’en est qu’à ses débuts. »Bertin Nahum: “Computer-assisted surgeryis just getting started.”Agglomération’s export missions were a big help in allowingMedtech to set foot in the United States.“In the meantime, the company produced Brigit, a robotdesigned to assist with knee replacement surgery. Sellingthe patent to the American firm Zimmer in 2006 enabled thecompany to fund development for ROSA: “When this giantof the orthopedic surgery world found out that our companyonly had four employees, they couldn’t believe it!” jokes BertinNahum.Represented in some thirty countries today, the company has astaff of about twenty people based in Castelnau-le-Lez and atits headquarters in New York. Following Brigit and ROSA,a new robot is planned for by the end of 2013. The new modelwill be specialized in spinal surgery: “This market is huge,with 1.55 million interventions per year around the world.”To address this market, the SME raised 4.5 million euros incapital from several investors, including Newfund and Soridec.Its goal: increase its share of export revenue from 60% to 90%(2 million euros in 2012; 3 million euros expected in 2013).North America, Asia, and the Middle East are the three mainmarkets.
