Luxovium
c'est ainsi que les romains baptisèrent cette ville dans
laquelle ils trouvèrent chaleur et réconfort. Il demeure
aujourd'hui de nombreuses traces de l'occupation
du site dès le premier siècle après Jésus-Christ.
Les thermes et plus de cinquante stèles funéraires
témoignent de l'importance qu'avait Luxovium à
l'époque gallo-romaine . C'est au haut Moyen Âge que
la ville connaît un développement soudain avec l'installation
du moine irlandais Colomban qui fonde un
monastère dont le rayonnement est souvent comparé
à celui de l'abbaye de Cluny. Rapidement, les conversions
au christianisme s'enchaînent et la ville devient
un important foyer religieux à l'époque mérovingienne.
Sous le Second Empire et la Troisième République, la
ville connaît un souffle nouveau ; Luxeuil-les-Bains
s'enrichit d'un nouveau quartier, de villas et d'hôtels
Art déco, d'industries et d'artisanats, parmi lesquels la
fameuse " dentelle de Luxeuil " considérée comme le
fleuron de l'artisanat local et le comble du raffinement
par toute la bourgeoisie française du XIX e siècle. Très
prisée de Napoléon III et de la Princesse Mathilde, les
thermes de Luxeuil-Les-Bains devinrent dès lors le lieu
de villégiature du Tout-Paris.

Luxovium, that was how the Romans baptised this city
in which they found warmth and comfort. There are
still many traces of the occupation of the site from the
first century AD. The baths and more than fifty funerary
steles testify to the importance that Luxovium had
during the Gallo-Roman era. It was in the high Middle
Ages that the city underwent a sudden development,
with the installation of the Irish monk Colomban, who
founded a monastery whose influence was often compared
to that of the Abbey of Cluny. Quickly, conversions
to Christianity ensued, and the city became an
important religious centre in the Merovingian period.
Under the Second Empire and the Third Republic,
the city took on a new breath; Luxeuil-les-Bains was
enriched by a new neighbourhood, villas and Art Deco
hotels, industries and crafts, including the famous
"Luxeuil lace" considered the flagship of local crafts
and the height of refinement by the entire French bourgeoisie
of the 19th century. Very popular with Napoleon
III and Princess Mathilde, the baths of Luxeuil-Les-
Bains became the holiday resort of Tout-Paris (the
fashionable and affluent elite of Paris).
