The Coton de Tuléar, originating in Madagascar, is a tough little dog, a good pet and companion. The official recognition of the standards of the breed by the central canine society (the first registration in the list of dogs of French origin) dates back to 1970, though the primary specimens of the breed saw the day as early as the 16th century in Tuléar, in the southwest of Madagascar. Even though the origins of the breed are uncertain, its connections with various types of Maltese dogs imported from the south-west of France by the trading ships of French settlers is obvious. According to the International Canine Federation, the Coton de Tuléar is the only Malagasy breed of dog. These little dogs have a superb self-cleaning coat that looks just like cotton (hence its name), protecting it from the heat and the cold. They do not moult seasonally and only lose a very small quantity of hairs each year. Their coat requires very careful upkeep: in order to avoid irreversible knots, they have to be brushed virtually every day. A monthly shampoo with an appropriate product also contributes to conserving the texture of their coat. With time, the brushing sessions lead to a great complicity between the master and the pet. Another specific characteristic of the breed is that the puppies sometimes have spots that can disappear, giving way to a totally white coat. However, a few light or dark spots, yellow or grey in colour, notably on the ears, are accepted. Magazine online www.primemedia.international | 23 |
