Art and Flavours Un po’ ovunque Merano è lastricata di arte e di storia. Lo
è in particolare lungo i Portici, il cuore della città, corridoio
commerciale di 400 metri voluto da Mainardo II nel
13° secolo. Oggi l’occhio cade soprattutto sulle vetrine dei
negozi e delle boutique, chiare espressioni di artigianato
tipico, specialità gastronomiche ma anche di firme della
moda. I negozi moderni alloggiano in antiche mura, affacciano
su nascosti cortili interni e si raggiungono percorren-
sitori Richard Strauss e Giacomo Puccini – a quest’ultimo è
intitolato il teatro, palcoscenico di mondanità alla pari del
Kurhaus. La vocazione della città all’arte e al bello si ritrova
anche a tavola, dove l’identità di territorio di confine tra
area germanica e italiana si traduce nella compresenza di
cucina tirolese e mediterranea, nonché nell’alternanza di
locali dove l’aria profuma del legno delle stube e di ristoranti
dai tratti più moderni e cosmopoliti. E ancora il vino:
l’antica tradizione viticola dell’Alto Adige si rispecchia in un
ampia varietà e indiscutibile qualità nel bicchiere.
Just about everywhere in Merano is marked by art and history.
This is particularly noticeable along the Portici, the
heart of the city: this is a street lined with rows of shops,
400 metres long, that dates back to Mainardo II and the
13 th century. Today the eye is caught above all by the display
windows of the stores and boutiques, offering local
handicrafts, gastronomic specialties and top fashions.
Modern stores are housed between ancient walls, looking
out over hidden inner courtyards and linked by stairs and
passageways. At the top end of the Portici rises the Ca-
thedral of Saint Nicolò, the city’s patron saint. History is
also present along the banks of the River Passer where,
surrounded by the green of the Summer Promenade, can
be found the statue of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth
(Sissi), a homage to the icon of Merano’s tourist tradition.
With its numerous noble visitors, Merano also became a
popular destination for various artists and intellectuals,
from the writer Franz Kafka to the composers Richard
Strauss and Giacomo Puccini, after whom the theatre is
named. This stages events of international renown that

with its location on the border between the Germanic
and the Italian worlds reflected in the combination of Tyrolean
and Mediterranean cookery, as well as the choice
of premises ranging from traditional Stuben with woodburning
stoves to ultra-modern, cosmopolitan restaurants.
And there is of course the wine: the ancient wine-growing
tradition of South Tyrol can be seen in the wide range and
unquestionable quality of the products served.
