centenaria, in Alta Savoia.
artigianali, apparentemente immote. I pochi rifugi allora esistenti,
estremo, come quello dell’alta montagna.
tubolari.
navicella spaziale, negli interni, sorprende nuovamente.
insuperabile.
finalizzato all’ottimizzazione nell’impiego del poco spazio. I pochi
tenda e spazio centrale libero.
interno sullo spettacolare paesaggio circostante.
nuotando in mare.
The recent reconstruction by Cassina – on the occasion of the
Furniture Salon of 2012 – of the Refuge Tonneau, a mobile mountain
shelter realized by Charlotte Perriand in 1938 may serve as starting
point for some considerations on a design genre which, while
dealing in micro-architectures for natural settings, actually exemplifies
IV design focus essay
the changes undergone by the home in relation to open-air life during
the last seventy-five years.
Charlotte Perriand, architect, assistant and then partner of
Le Corbusier, was known as a passionate mountaineer. A skier
and climber, she loved mountains to the point of deciding to spend
a part of her long life – she reached an age of almost a hundred
years – in the Upper Savoy. Here she designed the skiing resort
of Les Arcs, in addition to her chalet in Maribel. Her intuition of the
social importance that recreational activities in contact with nature
was to assume made her propose, already in 1936, prefabricated
weekend houses in wood and metal, designed to merge
harmoniously with nature in a fluvial environment.
Two years later her determination and interest resulted in the project
of the Refuge Tonneau, completed together with Pierre Jeanneret
and today produced by Cassina. This project wanted to represent
an invasion of modernity, through expressly industrial structural
solutions and aesthetics, in a world as that of early 20th-century
mountaineering, still bound to apparently static craftsmanship
solutions. The few mountain shelters that existed at the time
perpetuated the idea of a mountain architecture inspired by the
traditional Alpine wooden hut.
Perriand’s design for a prefabricated architecture for trekkers and
researchers, in replacement of heavy unmoveable wooden structures,
consisted of a light aluminium structure which was easy to assemble
and take apart, in line with the idea of a future that was being
asserted with architectural modernism.
Materials which at that time belonged to a new generation,
as lightweight aluminium, were used for the first time in a hostile
and extreme environment as that of high mountains. But the idea
of this futuristic machine remained very simple; indeed, it had been
borrowed from children’s merry-go-rounds.
A faceted structure made of twelve segments, supported by
a single central upright that like a periscope passes through the roof,
surrounded by a metal frame shaped like an umbrella. The base
is raised from the ground, so it may be adapted even to rugged
grounds as those found in the mountains, by means of thin tubular
feet. To enter the interior one must climb a few steps to reach
a watertight door. The traditional square windows are replaced
by round ones. All this contributes to lend a futuristic and industrial
touch to this kind of spaceship, which even though it precedes
it by several decades, is extraordinarily similar to the profile of the
LEM or lunar excursion module. But when one enters this spaceship,
the interior has yet another surprise in store: all surfaces of the walls,
floors and ceilings of the two floors are covered by spruce wood
which, like a second skin, creates a useful hollow space as insulation
from the outer aluminium.
The area of the interior is of 20 square meters, distributed on two
levels, in which the optimal exploitation of the space makes it possible
to comfortably house 8 persons and their mountaineering equipment.
All these characteristics make the Refuge Tonneau an extraordinarily
modern model of functionalistic micro-architecture.
The same modernity and topicality can also be found in another
small project linked to life in the open, which many see as an
unsurpassable model.
We are this time referring to the idea of life in contact with nature
and open air expressed by Le Corbusier through his Cabanon.
A man on vacation – he said – does not need much more than a bed,
a bathroom, a roof and the view of the sun that shines on the sea.
Coherently with his conviction, Le Corbusier, on the basis of a small
area he was allowed to use by a friend, the owner of the L’Etoile
de Mer restaurant at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, realized his Cabanon,
a single room in rough wood measuring 3.66 by 3.66 metres in plan

and 2.26 in height: with pinewood facing on the outside and oak
The interior is an articulated and integrated system, aimed at
an optimal use of limited space. The few furniture elements, the
bookcase, the table, the two beds, the washbasin and the bathroom
are therefore built into the architectural construction. The integration
of the part is emphasized by the dovetailing of the single functional
elements into one another. The base of the bed contains drawers.
A stool can be turned and used as steps to reach the mezzanine,
where a small storage area has been created. The washbasin
is placed in a point where it serves to divide two different areas
of the home. In this extreme reduction of functional necessities there
is no kitchen space; however, the small construction is directly
connected, by a door to the corridor, to the small restaurant on
the sea from which it had previously been separated. The plan
of the space can be divided into four identical rectangles which
circumscribe the different functional environments: bedroom, living
room, toilette divided by a curtain and a free central space. A lateral
space contains a small atelier measuring 1.50x5m with a table and
two whiskey crates as chairs. Three windows on as many levels offer
different views of the spectacular landscape in the surroundings.
But also in this micro-architecture the proportional rule of the Modular
is applied; and a drawing of it appears on one of the walls of
the Cabanon. It is here, in this small space, ideal for meditating,
immersed in the local nature, that many of the preparatory sketches
of important projects, which have then been reworked in his studio in
Paris, have been elaborated. And this is where Le Corbusier died from
a heart attack while swimming, during the summer holidays of 1965.

Park Life, Jasper Morrison, Kettal 2012.
lunghezze praticamente sempre diverse fino a dodici metri.
anche i tavoli di De Padova, Railway, disegnati da Luca Nichetto;
Due to a concomitance of factors, the outdoor furniture sector has
recently been subject of growing attention. On the one hand contracts,
or in other words supplies for collective facilities as hotels, have enjoyed
a surge; and on the other there are more and more “designed green
areas” in our cities, or in other words open spaces, often created as a
part of commercial activities. Last but not least, more and more furniture
types conceived to be used indifferently both outside and inside the
domestic walls are being launched. Plastic is not the only material to
dominate, even if it still plays an important role, due to the development
of new manufacturing techniques in addition to rotomoulding. It is
precisely the great freedom allowed by automated processes that make
it possible to offer almost “customized” products that is the strong point
of the system with table, benches and chairs of Extremis, designed
by Bruno Fattorini & Partners. The idea is to personalize the product,
radicalizing the concept of “extensibility”, starting with a remake or
reinterpretation in fibre glass of the traditional tables with integrated
benches in wood for outdoor use. Thanks to the poltrusion process, it
is possible to obtain lengths that are practically always different, up to
twelve metres. The material is less sensible to changes in temperature
and humidity than wood, and is moreover relatively light. Classical
forms also seem to be the motto of the Railway tables launched by De
Padova and designed by Luca Nichetto; here the round or rectangular
tops are in natural teak staves, arranged – as the name suggests – like
railway sleepers on a frame that serves as base; both this and the legs
are made in steel. New solutions and forms are therefore being used
to redesign classical typologies and their combinations, especially with
reference to their materials and the way they are combined. Classical
models, forms that remind of modernism and that render the pieces very
sober and suited both to indoor and outdoor use.
The pieces of Jasper Morrison’s collection Park Life for the Anglo-
Spanish brand Kettal have cost the designer some years of incubation;
they represent the famous designer’s first project for outdoor furniture.
Also in this case the design is based on a kind of reinterpretation of
a familiar typology, that of the garden chair, which has resulted in a
whole family of easily stackable furniture items, designed with extreme
lightness and attention to details and comfort, which have always
characterized the work of their author. A widespread use of synthetic
fibres instead of natural ones as wicker and rattan is on the contrary
a typical trait when crafts techniques are transferred to mass-produced
items. Weaving and other manual crafting methods are here used to
create effects that suggest traditional craftsmanship, as for instance by
the use of PVC ropes or plastic moulded to resemble woven tissues. This
trend is witnessed by the designs of Driade Store, as the Cape West
furniture range by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, where the texture of
the woven plastic forms almost textile plots accentuated by the use of
two colours; this technique is also used in the Rimini sunbeds designed
by the Anglo-Swedish duo Fredrikson Stallard, with structure in painted
aluminium covered by woven plastic. The linear forms of the latter bring
to mind, precisely, the masterpieces of modernism, something that is
also witnessed by details as the radius of curvature of the tubes of the
day-bed, or the large wheels of the inclinable sunbed.
Also the sunbeds designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Kartell are a
contemporary interpretation of traditional models; here materials as
wood or metal have been replaced by plastic, with lighter sections;
while the main design is clearly linear, the overall impression is softened
by the combination with fabrics and cushions.
Flexibility and adaptability to both indoor and outdoor use also
characterize accessories, which may be distinguished in gardening
tools and decorative items that may, depending on requirements, also
serve as “furniture” for terraces and open-air areas. The “inventions” of
Serralunga, which began its activities by launching designs representing
an alternative to archetypes in the form of new variations on the theme
of the vase, have recently been enriched by an outstanding design
by Eero Aarnio who, with his Primavera – shaped like a large cup –
renders homage to the sculptural tradition of the company.

(characterised by the continuous profile of its squared-off lines) and
the sensation of motion generated by their inclination and intersection
materiale frassino
dimensioni 600x370xH710mm
Ironic yet elegant, fun yet practical: Ligne Roset’s Picnic is a lively,
versatile new interpretation of the sewing box (or “travailleuse”) all
our grandmothers used to have until a few years ago. The unexpected
meeting of the usual with something new gives rise to a surprising
element which gives up its original function (it is no longer used
exclusively for storing sewing implements...) and is updated with more
modern materials (black-stained ash instead of the old oak or cherry).
And so it transcends the more ordinary references to take on another
dimension altogether, while at the same time preserving its familiar,
domestic character, confirmed by the softly curved treatment of the
storage chest as well as its feet/handle support which enables it to
be moved around with ease. The project originates with two talented
European design traditions, out of the magical union between the
design of the south and that of the north: GamFratesi is a design
Grande
year of realization 2010
Ever conscious of the importance of the landscape and the
environment, Piscine Castiglione offers swimming pool systems and
technologies that fit harmoniously into any natural setting. In recent
years the company has concentrated on the choice of colours and
materials used for finishing home swimming pools.
In the hills around Grosseto the company installed an innovative
Myrtha swimming pool with a ceramic finished edge and cascade;
the pool’s unusual shape and black finish allow it to interact with
the landscape, like a mountain pond with a stream flowing out of it.
The pool permits the utmost freedom of movement, and a rounded
corner offers a place to relax in the jet of water from the steel fountain.
Soft hues such as sand and bold black are always the most popular
colours. For example black is ideal for creating settings recalling the
traditional canals of the Po Valley or the Ligurian countryside, and
forms a symbiosis with the lava stone typical of the volcanic islands
of Sicily or the Tyrrhenian coastline.

fino a 4m.
all’ossidazione e agli agenti più infiltranti. L’installazione, messa a
punto dall’arch.
Refined materials, harmonious elements and strong technical content are
the guidelines behind the restyling of the outdoor area in a private home
in the heart of the Monferrato region. The access stairway, paths and
pavement throughout the swimming pool area are paved with Listotech ®
stone decking by Listotech ® , a new kind of material designed expressly for
outdoor use, in the Grigio Verde (Greenish Grey) hue to match the colours
around it. Listotech ® is the only prestressed stone strip capable of enclosing
a harmonic steel core in a thickness of only 3cm, available in strips up
to 4m long. Its highly sulphate-resistant composition (Ars) and the complete
absence of wood and plastic allow the pavement to withstand oxidation
and infiltration agents. The laying process, designed specifically for the
project by architect Mignone in collaboration with the manufacturer,
involved gluing of the strips onto a weft of teflon strips resting on the
in atto in Marocco dall’ultimo decennio.
Grazie all’ottica brevettata,
progettista Ruggero Marzotto (Studio AUA)
dall’alta resistenza all’usura, antigelivo e antisdrucciolo. I tagli diversi
project Squares in the city centre
location Arzignano (VI)
designer Ruggero Marzotto (Studio AUA)
year of realization 2004-2007
The project aimed to create an urban space that would be a site
of memory and identity; a challenge that had been put off for years
and was finally met by redeveloping the vast system of historic “gaps”
created by the disorderly streets and parking lots in the centre
of Arzignano. The project uses only a small number of materials
in a simple yet effective architectural idiom: a “carpet” of porphyry
is flanked by strips and spaces covered with mottled Grolla marble,
a pinkish yellow stone with a warm look which is highly resistant
to wear and frost and has a non-slip surface. Different cuts of marble,
from panels cut in the same direction to strips of alternating thicknesses
and to large slabs, create large unitary spaces where people can stop
and rest, while worked blocks of stone become seats or curbs and
The only company of its kind in Italy, BT Group was established and grew
in the Brianza area to give shade from the sun. The company’s team of
professionals give people the gift of relaxing moments under an awning,
pergola or sunshade. The company is truly one of a kind in that its productive
process is performed entirely in-house, from aluminium, which is used for the
structures casting, cutting, packaging and manufacturing of shades made
of PVC or acrylic or polyester, sold directly in the company’s own showrooms,
through resellers or by commission to custom designs. Aristide Radaelli,
a member of the second generation of the family that founded the company,
sums up its secret: “We have always invested in new products,
and our growth is due to our dedication to what we make from scratch”.

sistemi ombreggianti
shading systems
settore a livello nazionale.
Solo
fissi, tunnel, pergole e vele) tutte realizzate su misura, su disegno.
Ogni soluzione è progettata dall’ufficio tecnico interno
all’azienda che lavora in costante collaborazione con architetti
e progettisti.
All’uscita vengono fatti raffreddare
qualora vengano richiesti separatamente. La tendenza in atto per
quanto riguarda i profili vede prevalere le colorazioni chiare del
bianco avorio o all’opposto quelle scure del grigio ferro micaceo,
uno accanto all’altro e assemblati (saldatura per sovrapposizione)
accanto all’altro sino a ottenere la larghezza desiderata. In base
produttori italiani e internazionali, dai molteplici disegni e geometrie:
realizzata manualmente.
Grande attenzione deve essere dedicata proprio all’imballo,
ammaccature.
interno. Gli esordi sono legati
al settore della tappezzeria
e dell’imbottito, ma negli
anni 60 la produzione si
concentra verso il mercato
della protezione solare. Da
quel momento in poi l’azienda
conosce un’importante fase
di espansione che porta nel
1982 alla svolta industriale
con l’insediamento in un
nuovo capannone di 1700m 2
a Lesmo e l’ascesa in campo
dell’imprenditore Aristide
Radaelli. Negli anni 90
nasce la fonderia interna
che permette di verticalizzare
l’intera produzione delle
fusioni in alluminio. La continua
e costante crescita è storia
attuale, così come i brevetti
all’avanguardia registrati
A ciò associa tecnologie
micrometrico dell’inclinazione. È disponibile nei colori RAL 9010,
bronzo antico, grigio ferreo micaceo, grigio metallizzato chiaro,
All’elevata qualità dei prodotti, BT Group associa servizi pre e post
determinato contesto geografico.
The company’s productive plant has expanded over the years to the
current 20,000m 2 , employing 110 people who work on the design
and creation of awnings, pergolas and sunshades. The company
founded by the Redaelli family has certainly come a long way since
it started out as a little upholstery workshop in Monza: it is now one
of the biggest sunshade manufacturers in the country. The path to
success has been made up of small steps, but also of great milestones:
a path marked by moments of excellence and key turning points (such
as the 1982 opening of the new Lesmo plant), but characterised
by continuity of intent and daily achievement of concrete goals.
A history made up of investments, technological innovation and,
above all, people. The people who have helped the company grow,
made it strong and helped it make the right decisions. But also the
people who have worked in the shadows, without attracting attention
to themselves, to improve production day by day, contributing their
own small but important brick to the construction of the company.
100% in-house production, a wide range of systems and solutions
and a versatile offer are guaranteed by advanced production, now
completely industrial, in which attention to detail and to every little
part give its products an almost homemade, handmade quality.
Only through this difficult balance is it possible to offer both quantity
and quality, with a large number of outdoor solutions (cladding,
spring curtains, arm curtains, arm awnings with boxes, tunnels,
pergolas, fixed and freestanding sunshades) all made to measure,
to the customer’s design.
It all begins with the customer’s requirements, the type of shade
to be developed, its size and the colour of the frame and the fabric.
Ad hoc design and a production process flexible enough to meet
the most diverse requirements. One important advantage the
BT Group has to offer is unceasing research and development of
technologically advanced machinery and constant striving to achieve
product innovation and customisation. Every solution is designed
by the company’s technical office, working in close collaboration with
architects and designers.
Production begins with aluminium casting of all the pieces of the frame
in the company’s own foundry. Moulds designed and developed
specifically for the company are used to create all the frames castings
in the catalogue, from which customised pieces are then made.
This means the BT Group need not rely on a supplier, and can
respond promptly to demands for special pieces. All metal profiles
and accessories, available in a vast range of finishes and colours,
are transferred from the foundry and from the raw materials
warehouse to the painting plant, where they are treated to obtain the
desired colour. After 11 washes, the profiles pass into the painting
chambers, where an automated process (to which manual painting

may be added if special finishes are required) paints them perfectly
with polyester powder paint offering excellent resistance to corrosion.
The painted items are then fired at 200°C in the kiln to stabilise the
paint. When they come out they are cooled and then made available
for subsequent processing, or for packaging if requested separately.
The latest trend for frames is a preference for pale ivory or, at the
opposite end of the spectrum, dark micaceous iron grey, as well as
brown, a warm yet elegant hue produced exclusively for BT Group.
Production takes place on two main lines set up in parallel, with
a similar sequence of operations, which are very clearly subdivided
in two adjacent and practically independent constructions: pergolas
and sunshades are produced on one side, and awnings on the other.
The process of preparation of the pergolas centres on production
of the PVC shade. The shade is cut to meet the customer’s
requirements, in modules of uniform width which are then placed
side by side and assembled (welded by overlapping) to make up
the total width required. The shade may be automatically measured
and cut or with a pantograph in the case of more complex designs,
for the machine can faithfully reproduce shapes and sizes designed
on a computer on the sheet of PVC. Once the sheet has been cut to
the right size, an opening is made for the supporting cable. It is then
transferred to different lines where it is assembled with horizontal
metal rollers and the structure is prepared. Aluminium structures of
different shapes and colours are available for the rollers, as are
wooden frames for a “country” look which is less popular than in
the past these days, but still appreciated in certain contexts.
The procedure is similar for the awnings made in the new plant,
which has a vertical warehouse from which the desired profile can
be picked out and cut to size. Acrylic fabric is prepared in the same
way as PVC, stitching together 120 cm wide modules side by side
up to the desired width. The shade is then centred on the basis of its
dimensions, eliminating extra fabric at the sides.
BT Group offers an infinite variety of fabrics made by prominent
Italian and international textiles manufacturers, in all kinds of
designs and patterns: from stripes (an “evergreen”) to solid colours,
increasingly in demand, and from geometric to floral patterns, which
are definitely on the way out. The frame is then completed with
skirting (available in many designs) made by hand. The complete
shade is then assembled on the roller and prepared for shipping
along with the frame and the motor, if the awning is to be automated.
Packaging is very important, especially for large structures, as
both the fabric and the profiles are very delicate and can easily be
scratched, cut or dented.
All BT Group frames are subjected to laboratory tests. The arm
normally breaks after 30.000 opening and closing cycles, equivalent
to more than 20 years of use.
The company takes great care to keep up with current trends on
the market and leads the way with new “fashions” by presenting
products of exclusive design and formal elegance. To this it adds
patented technologies such as shade adjustment. The most recent
new sunshades, ideal solutions for any outdoor setting, are designed
by Ivo Pellegri, working in close collaboration with the company’s
technical office to develop products of great aesthetic quality with a
highly innovative technological content.
Creating shade for pleasant relaxation outdoors through an elegant,
minimal solution is the goal brilliantly achieved by Vela Double,
a freestanding sunshade which rests on the ground at four points.
Design, aesthetics and practicality, like all the company’s sunshades
(available in Basic, Cube and Double versions) characterised by
a simple yet bold structure which is as light as it is robust: a solution
perfectly balancing the need to stay cool with the desire for light,
perfect for any outdoor setting. Exclusively motor-operated, the
tensioning of the Dacron shade is regulated by an automatism with
gas-filled springs, while the aluminium frame is polyester painted in
the plant according to strict quality standards. Vela Double’s uprights
have micrometric control of inclination. It is available in RAL 9010,
antique bronze, micaceous iron grey and light metallic grey, also in
a version with the roller attached to the wall by a special corner plate.
BT Group combines high product quality with pre- and post-sales
service on the same level, at the customer’s side throughout the
lifespan of the sunshade. Its products are distributed all over Italy
through BT Group’s own stores (which also sell furnishing accessories
and curtains for indoor use) and through resellers, with the valuable
contribution of its latest new partners: BT Sud and BT Piemonte,
productive plants with truly local roots which allow the company to be
present in these geographic areas with standard solutions or systems
developed specifically for their own specific geographic context.

Sailing in the wind
a dialogue with Lorenzo Argento
era piena di attrezzature per manovrare le vele;
attrezzature attraverso nuove soluzioni tecniche.
Laura Andreini: Il vostro studio progetta anche
barche a motore o solo a vela?
“tranquille”.
Laura Andreini: Il vostro studio è composto solo
Laura Andreini: In the sailing
yachts sector the introduction
of new technologies has led to
a true revolution, both of the
construction systems that have
made it possible to build boats
with ever higher performances,
and of the ways we live and
use the boats.
The decks of sailing boats
used to be full of equipment
for handling the sails; how has
the external space of the boat
been transformed today, and
how has the comfort on board
improved? Please tell me
about your experience.
Lorenzo Argento: Our firm
began to study the idea of
hidden manoeuvres with the
design of the first Wallygator.
Luca Bassani gave us the
possibility to make two
boats, one of them a 100
feet in carbon, a boat that
combines comfort and racer
performances.
To use a 100 feet boat, even
with a professional crew,
where the winch carries
a sheet with a load of three or
four tons, is very dangerous.
Push-button sailing began with
that boat about 20 years ago.
We have made others: the
Wally B, with which our
collaboration with Enrico
Facino for the kitchen design
began, and the Kenora.
Then we have designed other
boats, not just with Wally
but also with Nautor’s Swan
and private customers, above
80-90 feet; in 2005 we have
begun this new project for
B-yachts, and since then we
have made about sixty, from
the B30 to the B60, in various
models and types.
Now we have only just
finished a B42, owned by
a very famous British architect,
a boat of 42 feet. It is a
matter of very complex boats
in terms of design, because
everything you cannot see
is still there. Our research
consists of making all the
equipment disappear through
new technical solutions.
Lorenzo Argento: Siamo Yacht Designer, abbiamo
quanto tempo ci dedichi e quante persone coinvolgi.
Laura Andreini: Does your
firm also design motor yachts,
or only sailing yachts?
Lorenzo Argento: Our firm
ranges from engine to sail, we
are very flexible, what matters
to us is to work on interesting
projects. We have been
working for some years with
BSD Benetti Sail Division; its
managing director is Simone
Marconcini, former director
of Nautor’s Swan, who has
involved us in the design of a
displacement motor yacht, with
“quiet” lines, proportions and
geometries.
Laura Andreini: Does your
firm only employ architects,
or also engineers who are
able to design not only the
upper-works but also the
quick-works?
Lorenzo Argento: We are
yacht designers, we have
studied in Milan and in
England, we are designers of
sailing yachts by definition,
and we therefore design the
hull, the keel, the interiors, the
layout, every part the boat is
made of.
As to motor boats, on the
contrary, we avail ourselves
of specialized engineers who
develop the performance in
terms of water resistance,
also in the case of very slow
displacement boats that travel
at a cruise speed of 8-9, boats
from 33 to 45 metres.
boma, entra nell’albero, esce dall’albero, tutto è
computerizzato, basta premere un pulsante. Poi ci
strutturale ricercata.
costa circa 400.000 euro, solo l’albero ne costa
barca?
Laura Andreini: How much
time does it take to build
a B42?
Lorenzo Argento: 3,000
hours of work. It depends on
how much time you dedicate
to it and how many people
you involve.
Laura Andreini: Has the fact
that you have an architect as
a customer made your work
more complicated or has it
simplified it?
Lorenzo Argento: The
architect has not seen the boat
yet. When he does, it will
be a surprise. It was already
quite defined on the outside
and there wasn’t much to
alter, but it has been changed
a lot internally. Twenty days
ago he decided to paint it
RAL 9002 light grey, the
same colour as a boat he has
already had made. As to the
graphic design of the name,
there has been an incredible
organization, it is called the
“Dulcinea”.
The dinette area is very
essential, there are two
benches covered by cushions
and two islands in Corian, one
for the sink and one for the
fridge, in addition to leather
sacks made by a Roman
saddle-maker, that cover two
shelves.
Logica, 122 ft.
Luca Brenta Yacht
Design.
In ogni progetto
comunque è riconoscibile anche il nostro linguaggio,
il gusto italiano, la nostra conoscenza della
tecnologia.
Laura Andreini: Nel design nautico di oggi, quanto
i paranchi.
slanci incredibili e chiglie profondissime.
libero basso.
fatti in carbonio.
materiali.
saperla guidare.
All the structural elements have
been left in view. The mast has
a compression load of 6,000
kilos, the sheet of the mainsail
starts from the stern, enters
the boom, comes out of the
boom, enters the mast, comes
out of the mast, everything is
computerized, all you have
to do is push a button. Then
there are the fastenings of the
structural stays.
The materials used are
carbon, epoxy resin, teak,
few materials and a studied
structural technology. The mast
was made in Spain, the boom
in Denmark. It has a 30-horse
Volvo engine which can reach
8 knots, accessible from the
interior or from the after peak.
Even if it is quite Spartan, the
B42 costs about 400,000
euro, only the mast costs
40,000, while a boat of
the same dimension as for
instance a Beneteau costs
about 150,000 euro.
Laura Andreini: Has your
firm also worked with John
Pawson?
Lorenzo Argento: We have
made the B60 with him, it is
a matter of an 18 metres with
master cabin and bathroom in
the bow, but he has performed
a very different role, because
in this case it has been the
customer who has wanted us
to involve John Pawson in the
design of the interior; he has
participated in the geometries
of the boat according to his
style. We have not cooperated
to any great extent, not as
we did with Piero Lissoni in
another project.
Laura Andreini: On what
basis do you develop a boat
project?
Lorenzo Argento: Usually
from a brief, from the request
of a customer; the request
is fundamental. There is a
very intense relationship with
the customer; we try to get
inspiration from his personality,
his habits, not to remain
distant or neutral. In any case,
also our language, the Italian
style and our mastery of the
technology is recognizable in
every project.
Laura Andreini: How close is
the relationship with tradition
in present-day yacht design?
Lorenzo Argento: We have
made presentations in which
we have compared period
yachts from the early Twentieth
century, which did not have
winches because nobody had
invented them yet, they only
had tackles. In this sense, we
relate to tradition, but today
we have the possibility to use
new technologies that enable
us to improve the performance
of the boats, as the winch
which makes it possible to pull
the sheets without tackles.
Boats from the early years
of last century had a very
low profile; they were very
elegant, with enormous
masts, incredibly quick
reaction and very deep keels.
Today, on the contrary, to
keep the free board low, and
as the keel is not as deep,
we concentrate the weight
in the ballast keels and build
very light hulls.
What I don’t love is the
copies, even if they are very
fashionable in the yachting
world. They are currently
remaking the J class, 40
metres long boat with a low
free board. It is a real replica
in steel, the only difference
is the material of the masts
which are made in carbon.
It is like taking a Renaissance
building and making it
identical, even if with new
materials.
We have recently built a
yacht for a gallerist from
New York, whom I met on
a board of a Wally B, and
that meeting has resulted in
the Ghost, a sailing yacht
of 122 feet. We have made
a very innovative boat with
great contents for him. It is
difficult for a customer to
accept the risks associated
with building a new boat,
making a prototype, because
apart from the fact that it is
more expensive, one cannot
be certain that it is going
to work. In fact, there are
also examples of clamorous
flops. It is much safer to do
something the customer has
already seen, with whose
characteristics he is familiar.
Less sailing yachts than motor
yachts are produced, and
nine out of every ten of them
are replicas.
Fifty out of sixty people
who buy boats have no
idea what a sailing yacht
is, they are only fascinated
by its image, it’s like buying
Porsche and not knowing
how to drive. SuperStar is a
boat that navigates without
wind, it is a unique project.
adesso viene costruita in carbonio.
Laura Andreini: A quali figure professionali fate
riferimento per la progettazione di una barca?
Lorenzo Argento: La progettazione strutturale
all’Australia, dall’Italia alla Finlandia
e all‘Inghilterra.
Laura Andreini: Quali sono i progettisti più
importanti a livello internazionale?
Lorenzo Argento: Per quanto riguarda la vela ci
sono due mondi molto distinti. Quello dei
racer (America‘s Cup/TP52 e Volvo) e quello
e sicure. Si potrebbe azzardare un paragone.
It is a new version of the Star
Class, the most fascinating
and well-known boat there is;
it has 100 years of evolution
behind it, it was originally a
wooden boat but today it is
built in carbon. The customer
is someone who has used
the Star a lot, and wanted a
striking boat, a new version
of the Star that was ten meters
long rather than seven and a
half. We have built a boat in
carbon with sharp angles; it
has required a year of design
and a lot of research. It is a
boat with a gigantic mainsail
and a canting keel that moves
50 degrees. There are two
pistons that act on the keel,
while it is moved vertically by
hand; it descends and clicks
into place, and remains with
two pivots inside the boat, that
are connected to pistons that
make it cant.
Laura Andreini: What
professional figures are
involved in the design
of a boat?
Lorenzo Argento: The
structural design is done by
structural engineers. We give
them the project and they
provide us with dimensional
data, reinforcement positions
and the layers of carbon
strips.
There is a continuous
exchange of drawings
between our firm and the
structural engineers. For
instance, to define the design
of the longitudinal walls, the
attachment of the fore shroud,
the rudder axis, the keel
system, the circular vang track,
the fairlead, the canard, the
lee-board.
Laura Andreini: Which are
the best yacht building yards
you work for?
Lorenzo Argento: For carbon,
a material we use in 99% of
the sailing yachts, we work
all over the world, from New
Zealand to Australia, from Italy
to Finland to England.
Laura Andreini: Who do you
consider to be the leading
designers on an international
level?
Lorenzo Argento: As far as
sailing yachts are concerned,
there are two clearly distinct
worlds: that of racing yachts
(America‘s Cup/TP52 and
Volvo), and that of super
cruisers. As to racers,
Botin&Partners along with
JuanK are the great leaders,
while in the super cruiser
category the firms of Dubois,
Frers and Briand are the most
prolific.
As to motor yachts,
we may mention both
Francesco Paszkowski and
Luca Dini.
As a firm we are something
in-between, we operate in
both sectors (motor and
sail) and our production
has caught the attention
of customers who love to
explore new territories
and who have, in the
end, proven to be great
innovators. Our great
cruise sailing yachts also
vaunt a high performance,
while our motor boats are
particularly quiet and safe.
One may hazard a
comparison: the sailing
yachts we produce are for
sophisticated and expert
sailors, while our motor
yachts are for “fishermen”
who are profound
connoisseurs of the sea
and its dangers, and they
are therefore slow and very
seaworthy boats.
Laura Andreini: Have
the lines of your boats
changed over the years,
and if so, have they
adapted to the evolution
of the materials and new
construction systems, or to
fashions and preferences?
14
equilibrata.
divertente.
Lorenzo Argento: They follow
either, to some extent; we
have managed to reduce the
weight of the materials and
to concentrate the weight
by using carbon. We put
everything we save in the hull
and the mast in the ballast,
and this makes it possible
to add more sail surface, we
increase the sail carrying
capacity and the rigidity
of the hull.
Today large, powerful and
stable boats are fashionable;
the opposite of what we
do or narrow, symmetric
boats where weight provides
stability, inspired by the trend
of America’s Cup: when the
boat heels it does not undergo
any variations in terms of
distribution of volume, it
always remains very balanced.
In a narrow boat where all the
stability is in the ballast keel
the guests can remain seated
where they want to, something
which is very important for
their comfort. A wide boat is
also called a Monomaran, it is
more comfortable to make
a crossing in it, but it is not
as fun.
Laura Andreini: A quanti progetti riuscite a lavorare
contemporaneamente?
Lorenzo Argento: Attualmente stiamo lavorando
a quattro progetti. Proposte, barche a vela, motore.
Europa e Spagna.
Stiamo lavorando ad una proposta per un 60
metri: siamo tre studi in gara e a breve dobbiamo
presentare il progetto al proprietario. Io disegno
progettato e definito ogni elemento.
We like the theme of the low
free board, the close contact
with the water that you lose
in large boats; we prefer
to compromise on the interior
space in order to be closer
to the water.
Laura Andreini: How many
projects do you manage to
work on at the same time?
Lorenzo Argento: We are
currently working on four
projects. Proposals, sailing
yachts, engine boats. Our firm
does not work a lot with Italian
customers, at present we are
working first and foremost with
Northern Europe and Spain.
We are working on a proposal
for a 60 metres: there are
three firms competing for the
contract, and we must soon
present the project to the
owner. I draw a lot by hand;
I make a sketch which I show
to the customer. On this boat
we will define they layout,
and then there is usually
a decorator who defines the
interiors; on the Superstar,
on the contrary, we have
designed and defined every
element.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
I clienti volevano
This tautly designed houseboat
floats in the Amstel river of
Amsterdam.
The design has, unlike most
floating houses, a very
contemporary design without
losing the characteristic
appearance of the typical
houseboat. The clients get a lot
of positive reactions, it evens
happens that people who pass
by boat knock on the windows
and ask if they can enter the
boat. Living on the water
gets more and more popular
in Holland. The clients/
owners who come to our
office always love the typical
charms and characteristics of
living on the water but don’t
like the standard “caravan”
appearance of the existing
houseboats. More and more
people want to live on a
contemporary houseboat that
has been designed for their
specific needs; the houseboat
at De Omval is an obvious
example of this wish.
The clients wanted a boat
with an open floor plan where
they could enjoy the views
to the water and the outdoor
space to a maximum. The
distinguished curved line of the
facade directly derives from
this desire and the restriction
that the boat couldn’t be more
than three meters above the
water. The living area and
open kitchen are located on
the waterfront, from here one
has a panoramic view at the
Amstel and you can enter the
floating terrace. Following
on from the living area and
kitchen the bedroom is located
on a split level. The split level
introduces an open route to
the ground floor of the boat
and, at the same time, makes
it possible to create a terrace
on the south side without
exceeding the maximum
building height. To accentuate
the round lines of the facade
it is carried out in with shiny
aluminum. The white plastered
walls and ceilings follow the
curve of the facade creating
a seamless transition from the
exterior to the interior.
