potenziatore immaginifico. Cercando di stimolare una conversazione tra il lettore
e se stesso, e tentando inoltre di prendersi gioco dei numerosi romanzi
autobiografici in voga all’epoca, Sterne desiderava che il suo pubblico
partecipasse attivamente alla creazione del libro. Considerato che per l’autore il
libro era un oggetto concreto, composto da pagine stampate composte da lettere,
parole e segni, Sterne ricorse a numerosi escamotage sia per concentrare
l’attenzione alla qualità grafica – nel caso della morte di Yorick (26) introduce una
black page – sia per mostrare l’imprevedibilità del libro, ovvero della vita stessa –
per esempio, nel Vol. III, cap. XXXV, inserisce la marble page, sinonimo
dell’imprevedibilità del romanzo:
Joe: The black page. (lo schermo diventa improvvisamente nero) When the good
parson Yorick dies, the book has a completely black page.
Simon: I don’t know how interesting a black screen will be for an audience.
Joe: The original cover for Anarchy in the UK was inspired by that page.
Mark: But Yorick isn’t even in the film.
Joe: He used to be.
Simon: Hardly anybody’s in the film. That’s the problem.
Coogan: I like the black page. That’s one of the arty bits I actually like.
Simon: Why do we want to spend a year of our life making this film?
Mark: Because it’s funny?
Simon: Is that all?
Mark: Isn’t that enough?
Coogan: If it’s genuinely funny, that is enough. (Joe ride) It has to be genuinely
funny.
Simon: What was all that stuff Patrick told us when he visited Shandy Hall?
