48 marenostrum Colpisce più di tutto all’orizzonte, a una ventina di chilometri da Alghero, la mae- stosità del promontorio di Capo Caccia con il faro a 186 metri slm, che si avvista già da 34 miglia di distanza (è uno dei meglio visibili del Mediterraneo). E colpisce ancor più quando si esplora il suo magico inter- no: le Grotte di Nettuno, che si estendono per due chilometri e si raggiungono dal piazzale di sosta attraverso la Escala del Cabirol o scala del capriolo: 660 gradini in una spettacolare discesa nel ventre carsico della montagna. Oppure, per chi vuole arrivarci dal mare, con una piacevole traversata dal porto di Alghero, grazie alle motonavi che ogni mattina alle 10 partono alla volta delle Grotte (info: www.alghero-turismo.it). Per quasi un’ora si spalancano davanti agli occhi scenari stupefacenti, illuminati da luci ad effetto: ecco la Reggia, con enormi colonne che sembrano scolpite, il Lago Lamarmora, uno dei più grandi specchi d’acqua salati d’Europa, l’Acquasantiera, stalagmite alta due metri con piccole coppe sulla sommità dove gli uccelli si abbeverano, il Grande Organo nella Sala Smith che porta il nome di un capitano inglese dell’Ottocento, la spiaggia dei ciottolini, la sala delle trine e dei merletti, la Tribuna della musica dalla quale si può ammirare la sala principale dall’alto, come a teatro. Oltre 150 mila persone all’anno godono di questa esperienza adatta a tutti tranne a chi soffre di claustrofobia o problemi di mobilità, naturalmente. Mentre il percorso open air alla scoperta delle antiche civiltà del Mediterraneo che fin dal IV millennio avanti Cristo si sono insediate in questo Paradiso è davvero per tutti. A cominciare dalla necropoli Anghelu Ruju (in sardo, angelo rosso, che dà il nome anche a un vino locale) e dal villaggio nuragico di Palmavera, il primo che si incontra arrivando da Porto Torres, con la grande capanna per le riunioni, le capanne circolari e il nuraghe al centro, continuando verso Capo Caccia e lasciandosi guidare da un esperto per conoscere the Stiff Hedgenettle - a flower typical of the karst landscape - the Broom, the wild boar, the deer, the Giara horses and the white donkeys living in the wildlife oasis of the stateowned forest, with its marked paths and refreshment area. What strikes you most of all is the majestic Capo Caccia promontory on the horizon, some twenty kilometres from Alghero, with its lighthouse, 186 metres above sea level, that can be seen from 34 miles away (it is one of the most visible in the Mediterranean). It is even more impressive when you explore its magical inner area, where you will find Neptune’s Grotto, which stretches for two kilometres and can be reached from the rest area via the Escala del Cabirol or goat’s steps: 660 steps of spectacular descent into the karsic centre of the mountain. Those who wish to arrive by sea can enjoy a pleasant crossing from the port of Alghero, thanks to the motor ships that depart every morning at 10 o’clock, arriving at the opening of the Grotto (info: www.alghero-turismo.it). For almost an hour, stupendous visions will unfold before your eyes, illuminated by special lighting effects: there is the Palace, with its enormous columns that look like they have been sculpted, Lake Lamarmora, one of the largest saltwater lakes in Europe, the Aquasantiera, a twometre tall stalagmite that has small cups on top from which birds can drink. Then there is the Great Organ in the Smith Room, named after a nineteenth century English captain, the beach of pebbles, the room of laces, the music gallery from which you can admire the main room from above, like in a theatre. Every year, over 150 thousand people enjoy this experience, which is suited to everyone except, of course, those who suffer from claustrophobia or mobility problems. However, the open air path of discovery of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations that began settling in this paradise as early as the 4 th millennium BC, is truly for everyone. You can start out from the Anghelu Ruju necropolis (Sardinian dialect for “red angel”, giving its name to a local wine) and the Nuragic village of Palmavera, which is the first you will come across, arriving from Porto Torres, with its great meeting hut, circular huts and the Nuraghe in the centre.
