intorno all’VIII sec. d.C., dovette essere adattata
In esso è raffigurato, secondo
Sant’Egidio.
The Cript Frescoes
The work covers the beginning of the barrel vault
part of which originally was Roman villa and
which around 8th Century A.D was adapted by a
small community of Benedictines.
The fresco measuring 5metres by 2 metres takes
up the upper part of the vault whilst the lower part
is marked by representations of stars symbolising
the call of the light of heaven.
Attributed to the 13th Century (Friderician age ) it
shows an example that compares to few works in
the whole of southern Italy as regards the pictorial
art of transistion between miniature and fresco.
According to the iconography recalled in the
Aurea Legend by Jacopo da Varagine, the fresco
depicts the miracle of Sant’Egidio and the deer
with the figures of the King and the Bishop accompanied
by cavaliers (six in the representation)
and preceded by subjects that make the way for
the royal procession in the brush.
Besides being a fresco of exceptional artistic value
it is also the oldest “document” about the first
place of worship for the community dedicated to
Sant’Egidio.
