Starting from analysis of the characteristics of the personal<br />

services sector, together with discussion of the altruistic and<br />

non-egoistic motivations of workers, the article highlights that<br />

social cooperatives have been able to develop a new model of<br />

relations with workers, or industrial relations.<br />

The article, which is introductory in nature, presents the <strong>ICSI</strong><br />

<strong>2007</strong> survey from whose data the contributions to the volume<br />

are drawn. Conducted on a sample of more than 300 social cooperatives<br />

and almost 4 thousand workers, the aim of the survey<br />

was to investigate the characteristics of Italian social cooperatives<br />

and their workers (paid, voluntary and managerial).<br />

By means of qualitative analysis of the judgments expressed<br />

by social cooperatives in regard to their current state and prospects,<br />

the article helps define the initial weaknesses and strengths<br />

of social cooperatives and their recent evolution.<br />

Analysis of the composition of the social base and boards of<br />

social cooperatives highlights, firstly, that workers are involved<br />

in the governance of almost all cooperatives. Also good is<br />

the representation of voluntary workers, while users are the<br />

least represented, although they are often involved in ways
