piccoli lussi
Senza troppe
In particolare negli spazi destinati prima esclusivamente all’igiene
all’hamman.
Natura e Tecnologia”.
progettato da Toshiyuki Kita e presentato in anteprima all’Ultimo
bagnoschiuma.
all´ambiente bagno. Faraway Collection è stata segnalata con
La Menzione d´Onore Compasso d´Oro ADI 2011. Zucchetti.Kos
Palomba.
A recent advertisement vindicates a new right to luxury, identifying
it with a small utilitarian car and inciting an indignant reproof against
unattainable luxury. Without too much beating about the bush,
the advertisers seem to have hit the bull’s eye. In view of the current
state of affairs, the traditional concept of luxury, which is only
accessible to those with abundant funds, is moving further and further
beyond reach. Yet an abandonment of a goal that has inspired the
dreams and myths of consumers in the last decades is not acceptable.
A reload is therefore in progress; without abandoning the very idea of
luxury, one attempts to redefine it, eliminating its more unattainable traits.
design focus essay
The commercial contributes to this: less parties, jewellery (as shown
in the film clip), villas and the fast life: true luxury lies in simpler things.
A “democratic” luxury made of gestures rather than frills, of caring
for oneself, of economical special treats. It is obvious that the
prioritized stage for these little, mainly affective, luxuries is precisely
the home. Especially in the spaces that used to be dedicated only to
hygiene and that today serve a more ample concept of personal care.
The traditional accessories have here been replaced by hybrid
products, inspired both by outdoor equipment and by distant customs,
suggesting an evolutionary trajectory between different worlds: from
simple washbasins to large elegant ones, from ordinary tubs
to domestic minipools, from showers to Turkish baths. But let us take
a look at some concrete examples of the scenario described until this
point. Let us begin with a case that, in terms of product range and
research quality, reflects the current state of affairs well.
Inax Corporation is a Japanese company founded in the remote
early Twenties when it produced high-quality ceramics and tiles, and
obtained the supply contract for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hotel Imperial
in Tokyo. It changed name and identity in the mid-Nineties, expanding
its activity from the initial one of producing ceramic facing materials
and bathroom fixtures, to include the creation of complete bathroom
interiors.
Inax has over the years become an interpreter of the Japanese cultural
tradition of water. In that country, rich in volcanoes and hot springs,
washing oneself plays an important, almost ritual role. The bathroom
has traditionally not only served to clean the body, but as a mediator
for a spiritual experience of nature, through an itinerary of total
regeneration. This desire for an all-inclusive wellness is pursued
by Inax by building three fundamental factors into its products:
“Man, Nature and Technology”. This is evident in a number of recent
designs, as Furo, the new concept for the bathroom interior designed
by Toshiyuki Kita and presented for the first time at the last Furniture
Salon. In this project Kita has been able to once more bring ancient
and precious customs to the fore, amplifying the concept of bathtub
by means of the latest technological developments. With Furo it is
possible to create a “foam bath” inside the tub, with a device that
mixes air and hot water through a special foam-generating agent.
The bubbles are tiny, with a diameter varying from one hundred
to a few hundred micron, and they are delicate and incredibly
creamy to the touch as compared to traditional foam baths. Being
concentrated in a layer on the surface, the foam acts as a blanket,
preventing the hot water from cooling and thus preventing steam
from rising. The tub remains only halfway filled with water, while
the rest is occupied by foam bubbles, something which reduces
the consumption of water and the energy necessary to heat it
considerably. Thanks to this process, which prevents damp vapours
from spreading in the interior, the tub may be installed anywhere in
the home, making possible a new concept of bathroom, that no longer
necessarily has to be relegated to a special room. Moreover, thanks
to the reduced volume of water used, the system makes it possible to
avoid exhausting the body with the pressure and the rapid thermal
dispersion of the accumulated warmth.
The project is completed by the organic design of the tub which,
unlike traditional elliptic tubs, is adapted to the human body,
favouring its movement and relaxation.
Just as the tub, also the shower cabinet reflects a desire to create
an enclosed and independent space, through the use of a few striking
elements: the linear contours, the light diffused by LEDs and the design
of the floor tiles.
We conclude with another example of a systemic and prolific
approach to the theme of water, namely the Faraway Collection
produced by Zucchetti.Kos and designed by Ludovica and Roberto
Palomba. It comprises more than 100 products, conceived for private
homes, contracts and spas, and represents a kind of coherent and
specific approach to the world of bathrooms and water. In this case
the identity element may be summed up as an idea of absolute
prevalence of the tactile and sensorial experience. It is a matter
of the most complete and well-organized collection for the bathroom
realized until now: 10 types of different materials, 50 different faucet
items, 2 tubs, 3 washbasins, a concept spa, more than 30 accessories
and complements. Faraway is a project that ranges from the
accessory to the minipool, and makes an important contribution
to the change, in a post-functional sense, to the bathroom
environment. Faraway was awarded the Honorary Mention of the
Compasso d’Oro of ADI in 2011. This year Zukketti.Kos also received
the Compasso D’Oro Prize for the Lab 02 by Kos washbasin, another
design by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba.
Heat, free standing electrical heater,
designed by 5.5.Designers for Saazs.
Accessori intelligenti, multitasking, che invitano a comportamenti
sostenibili completano la nuova stanza da bagno. Intelligenza,
modulare composto da una base e da tre elementi a scelta;
posizione centrale è erogata solamente acqua fredda, evitando
Intelligent, multitasking accessories that encourage a sustainable
lifestyle are completing the new bathroom. We are above all speaking
of intelligence because it is a matter of objects that, thanks to the
performance guaranteed by their materials, may hybridize several
functions, proving a certain versatility in use.
This has been evident in the study projects and future applications
presented at the last Furniture Salon in Milan by Saint Gobain, which
in collaboration with the Saazs research laboratory has developed
prototypes based on the Quantum Glass active glass technology.
The electric radiators by the French 5.5 firm stood out among the
works by the six international designers who had been invited.
The basic idea is to use Thermovit Elegance heating glass to present
a new, dematerialized image of the radiator. It is a matter of a
modular system, composed of a base and three elements chosen from
a range of options: the combination of the latter in different materials
and colours with the glass allows a certain compositive freedom
to create something that resembles “artificial landscapes”.
The same collection also finds room for a reflection on the mirror,
an indispensable item in a bathroom, which also in this case, thanks
to the new glass technology, becomes not only a heating element, but
also a sound-diffusing surface, turning into a speaker. From traditional
mirror, therefore, to device for playing and listening to music; an
object vaunting a concentration of innovations, that make it the first
in its category.
This kind of “invisible” technology has also inspired some of the most
interesting designs in the faucet sector. For instance Makio Hasuike,
taking advantage of the solid experience obtained with the first series
from a few years ago, has with Rubinetto for Cristina Rubinetterie
launched the idea of an accessory with a completely radical form.
What one sees is only a cylinder in polished metal, perfect, which
contains, “embedded”, all the functions necessary to blend water
in its interior.
In other cases technology is a function of ecology: as in the Nobili
Energysaving ® patent of the Eco collection by Nobili. When the level
is in a central position in the faucets included in the Nobi E and Anc
E series, only cold water is poured; the boiler is not activated and
the consumption of hot water reduced (something that leads to less
combustion exhausts in the environment and a reduction of energy
waste).
Continuing to explore innovative versions of traditional categories,
exploring new ways to use and relate to the bathroom, the towel
heater designed by Peter Jamieson for Deltacolor – no bigger than
a small painting – conceals its function when closed with a decorative
exterior. In fact, it consists of two elements – a frame fixed to the wall
and a specifically patented central balancing and tilting ergonomic
module – that makes it possible, once the panel is closed again,
to frame the towel in the way a shirt is framed in a box.
Finally, the exercise in style, anything but sterile and rich in ideas that
may be subject of further development, tackled by a team of young
designers in the ECAL in Lausanne, who have measured swords with
the existing Acor Bouroullec bathroom system. The latter, which was
presented last year, is based on a complete freedom of composition,
and to develop the concept further the young designers have ideated
a series of accessories.
Diane Du Chaxel has for instance, with the concept of Screens,
invented a set for organizing the washbasin areas with various
screens behind which to conceal objects and accessories, realized
in opaque Perspex to evoke the sensorial quality of Japanese Shoji
paper (the one used for windscreens, whose form inspire these small
partitions). Upgrade by Doganberk Demir, on the contrary, is a series
of bathroom accessories that re-elaborate the forms of the washbasins
of Axor Bouroullec in miniature, turning them into shelves and tops
in various dimensions, with legs and handles, to move various
products and anything else that is useful in the bathroom from the
basin area to the bath and shower area.

dalle mani sapienti dell’uomo.
Comfort, innovazione,
squadra, risolvendo così molti problemi di posizionamento all’interno
degli ambienti residenziali contemporanei. Sartoriale Maxi conferma
A sculpture that echoes the forms of classical bathtubs is offered
in a contemporary, attractive and engaging design. The single version
of the Sartoriale tub, designed by Carlo Colombo, becomes maxi-sized
to accommodate more people within its very generous volume.
Ethereal but solid, subtle yet with a strong personality; the tub is a sort
of mini-pool for the home, which seduces with its smooth, rounded lines.
The inside of the Sartoriale Maxi tub has an enveloping shape,
in contrast with the straight lines and rigorous, square shapes of the
tub’s outer sides. Its smooth and harmonious look evokes a shape
sanded down over time by the forces of nature; of a block carved
by the skilled hands of man. Sartoriale Maxi is available in freestanding
(with customized solutions for a fully boxed look or with two sides that
reach down to the floor), flush mounted or semi-flush mounted versions.
Comfort, innovation and quality are combined to offer a customized
solution to meet each customer’s needs. The technology used
by Antoniolupi makes it possible to install the tub even in non-square
angles, thus solving many positioning problems in contemporary
residential environments. Sartoriale Maxi once again confirms
Antoniolupi’s ability to not rest on its laurels, but rather feed the
development of a design through new solutions that take into account
functional and formal needs that are constantly evolving. The “tailoring“
of the bathroom is one of the themes the company holds dear:
components, furnishings and accessories are custom-made according
to the customer’s needs, ideas and passions. Minimalism and geometry
of forms are the point of reference and leitmotif of the company’s entire
production. This does not mean sterile repetition of lines and proven
solutions, nor does it translate into identifying itself through the style
of one single designer, but rather expresses the desire to constantly
update, to evolve, to tread new ground, both a esthetically and in the
development of new materials and technologies.

A new way to discover unexplored, creative, and unusual uses
for porcelain stoneware tiles. Mosaici d’Autore continues the search
undertaken by Ceramiche Refin with Massimiliano Adami in exploring
the mosaic theme and reinterpreting it through the rediscovery of the
raw materials that have given rise to the most traditional ceramic
product, now reinvented in a new way.
Enhancing the unexplored side of the tile and delving into new
perspectives on the use of light and its interaction with the structures
of ceramic materials are two of the goals set forth in the three
collections offered by the Mosaici d’Autore project.
This research was developed within the exploration of
DesignTaleStudio, a place to exchange ideas, creativity and
experiences with design and materials. Among its fundamental
values, Dts sets out to rediscover the ceramic tradition that, through
a formal and material research, becomes the object of innovative
interpretations of high aesthetic value and design.
The Mosaici d’Autore project rediscovers the mosaic format, which
is usually classical and rooted in the oldest decorative traditions,
and has developed it in an entirely new form of creative expression
that revolutionizes the very concept of porcelain stoneware.
Presented at the FuoriSalone of Milan and now being finalized
for production, it is scheduled to be shown at Cersaie under the name
Beside. Beside offers a never before seen use of the ceramic product,
born following close examination of the porcelain stoneware tile
in its raw form, particularly its back side. Its reverse side (or B-side)
unexpectedly becomes the protagonist: its square graphic pattern
is used to bring out the geometry of mosaic by playing with the colors
and reflections of ceramic glazes.

casuale, come quello dell’acqua.
massima versatilità e personalizzazione, regala sensazioni inaspettate
Fanno
parte della collezione vasche, lavabi e piatti doccia in Duralight ® e
sanitari in ceramica.
Infine, i sanitari sospesi, realizzati in ceramica,
A light, dynamic balance which interacts with geometric and
architectural elements to state a bathroom concept with a bold, highly
contemporary character: Outline is a collection of bathroom furnishings
designed by Carlo Colombo for Teuco. An expression of strength
and material power, Outline underlines the beauty of irregularity with
an eclectic style for new expressive freedom in the bathroom; the
collection’s distinctive trait is edges which stand out above the material
asymmetrically, in an apparently random flow like water. The softness
of the shapes is made possible by the expressive potential of Duralight ® ,
a patented solid surface composite material which is 100% mouldable,
designed, produced and worked exclusively by Teuco, which not only
permits the utmost versatility and customisation, but offers unexpected
sensations to amplify the wellbeing offered by the contact with water.
The collection includes Duralight ® tubs, sinks and shower stalls
and ceramic toilets and bidets. The rectangular tub, also available
in a freestanding version for installation in the centre of the bathroom,
has an exclusive Hydroline patent: it is the world’s first invisible
hydromassage system, in which the classic nozzles are replaced
by narrow openings that disappear from view for a new everyday
experience with an elegant emotional impact. The openings permit
an advanced Cromoexperience system: a backlit opening through
which adjustable coloured light in eight different hues continuously
illuminates the bathroom. The sinks have pure shapes and compact
volumes and are available in versions that rest on the countertop
or are set flush with it, with great aesthetic impact. The shower tray
has a smooth, highly material surface with a special focus on details:
the total drain cover, for example, is not merely a functional element
but an elegant sign of style. Lastly, the wall-mounted ceramic bathroom
fixtures reproduce the dynamic lines typical of the collection. Outline
may be combined with the new InsideOut furniture line and the new
Skidoo tap collection, both designed by Carlo Colombo.

bicomponente, resistente all’acqua, al calore e agli agenti chimici,
e resistenza agli agenti chimici e all’abrasione. Ogni singola tessera
è tagliata e bisellata sui quattro lati, in forme diverse, poi assemblate
dall’azienda interamente in Italia.
Precious materials such as stone, glass, metal, and wood are
combined in optical geometric forms to create original surfaces that
become the protagonist of any space. Dialoghi is the mosaic tile
collection designed by Francesco Lucchese for Mosaico+, consisting
of shaped, mixed tessera that are 8mm thick.
Hardwood has been introduced in the collection, infusing the mosaic
tile with natural warm tones and making this blending of different
materials its strongest feature. The hardwood, cut from 4mm-thick
slats, is available in oak, doussié, black walnut, bleached hoak
and wengè. The wood is glued to a 4mm technical base with two
component polyurethane adhesive, which is resistant to water, heat
and chemicals, and is completely formaldehyde free.
The technical base is made of reclaimed polymers and wood fibers
from environmentally-friendly sources. The wood is then polished
and protected with a special hard paint not turning yellow over
time, coating that is highly-resistant to chemicals and abrasion. Each
individual tessera or tile piece is cut and beveled on all four sides,
and into different forms, then assembled together with other materials
to create the mosaic sheet.
The veining, colors and thickness of Mosaico+ offer high durability,
size stability and mechanical strength. The mosaic is mounted
on a fiberglass net to form sheets that can vary slightly depending
on the module; the tiles are spaced about 2mm apart.
Dialoghi allows for infinite layout compositions, which can also be
customized by the customer through the free Design Tool, distributed
on cd and available shortly on the company website. The tool allows
the client to easily design his or her own mosaic tile and provides
high-photo renderings of the designed product, which is then made
to order by the company in Italy.

Una linea contemporanea, dall’alta qualità 100% made in Italy,
nocive dall'ottone e vengono impiegati materiali, come gomme
Born from the search for new formal solutions based on rigor and
simplicity, designers have worked side by side with Castiglia Associati
design to create Next, the new complete collection of single-lever
bathroom mixers by Fima Carlo Frattini whose product design and
innovation set it apart in the industry. A high-quality contemporary line
that is 100% made
in Italy, the collection features all hardware and accessories for the
sink (including high-bowl sinks), bidet, bath and shower, while paying
attention to the form, detail and technical innovation that has always
distinguished the brand’s entire line.
The salient feature of the new collection is its oval cut, which highlights
the faucet’s flat front surface ending with the knob. The centerpiece
of the design is the faucet mixer, available in two versions: an original
“knob“ cut with a strong and captivating look, and a simpler lever
integrated into the faucet design, for the ultimate in formal elegance.
Simplicity, precision and clean lines are the hallmarks of a complete
and versatile collection, capable of fitting into any bathroom setting,
from traditional to highly contemporary. The line is sober but stylish
at the same time, and its strong points are the quality of materials
and technologies used. Not to mention sustainability. All stages in the
production of Fima Carlo Frattini taps, from initial design to finished
product, are geared towards quality and respect for the environment.
To this end, galvanic processes are employed to remove harmful
particles from brass, as is the use of materials such as rubber or metal
that meet the most stringent industry regulations and those of health
authorities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

pietra levigata dall’acqua.
dimensione relazionale, come testimoniano i progetti sviluppati
Mono’ is a collection inspired by the creativity of French designer
Patrick Norguet and made by Flaminia, characterised by full, thick
shapes and rounded lines. Mono’’s classic contemporary style makes
this line of bathroom fixtures perfect for different styles of bathroom and
permits combination with other elements from Flaminia’s collections.
The toilets and bidets in the Mono’ collection, available either
freestanding or wall-mounted, have an intentionally full, rounded shape
in which rigour becomes sensuality and elegance.
Their soft volumes seem to have been hollowed out of the ceramic,
giving it an all-embracing appearance reminiscent of a stone rounded
off by water. Sinks come in four sizes, from 540mm to 1000mm,
and can be installed either wall-mounted or resting on one of the many
shelves and benches in the Flaminia range.
The Mono’ series is completed with a new series of taps and
accessories: Noke’, also designed by Norguet, with its unusual ovalshaped
section and compact forms in line with those of Mono’.
Mono’ is also part of the new approach adopted by Ceramica
Flaminia, which puts color at the center of the bathroom, allowing
the client to personalize the space and its elements according to his
or her style or taste. The company, under the artistic direction of Giulio
Cappellini, has taken on the challenge this year of exploring new
cultures and lifestyles and enhancing the relational dimension,
as evidenced by its designs developed in conjunction with Product
Design students at Ied in Rome. Part of this exploration has been
focused on a space that by definition represents the realm of privacy:
the bathroom.

Come ogni collezione dell’azienda, grande attenzione è stata
Kos.
Created to combine the archetypal shapes impressed in everyone’s
memory with an innovative aesthetic, Morphing represents the
metamorphosis of a bathroom that is always in the process
of becoming. Sculptural and sophisticated, familiar yet innovative,
the collection, designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, combines
tradition with a contemporary aesthetic, new materials and references
to classic types. This is how the designers describe their work:
“We believe that good designs already exist in a sort of collective
imagination and that our task is to identify these unconscious needs,
give them form and bring them into being.
And so a product chosen by an infinite number of people we don’t
know will be amazingly familiar to them as soon as they set their eyes
on it. It’s like falling in love at first sight. It’s obvious. Choices, tastes…
passion: everything is obvious in what we create. The key to our work
– research, development, design… could all be summed up in a single
word: Obviousness”.
Like all the company’s collections, this one features a strong focus
on materials and on optimisation of the productive process, with use
of only a few moulds permitting multiple formal and spatial solutions
and offering a vast range of models.
Developed in synergy with the Cristalplant ® trademark, Morphing
explores and enhances the transforming aesthetic of this innovative
contemporary material. Sinks, tubs, furnishings, accessories and
complements are versatile enough to fit into any kind of bathroom
thanks to the small size of the elements in the collection.
Morphing was presented along with Zucchetti’s Isy collection
in a coloured version (designed by Matteo Thun with Antonio
Rodriguez) for a complete range of bathroom products, the true goal
of all Zucchetti.Kos Group collections.

Amedeo è il nuovo lavabo disegnato da Karim Rashid per Cielo;
Posizionabile su entrambi i suoi
scultorea, Amedeo diventa inevitabilmente protagonista assoluto dello
ceramica tradizionale bianco lucido e nero lucido; Stone e Antracite,
A new product, a sink based on an unusual design concept that adapts
to all kinds of decorative and functional requirements.
Amedeo is the new original sink designed by Karim Rashid for Cielo,
composed by a basin, round or oval, and a freestanding column,
in two different versions, that becomes an elegant element with slender
lines, as if moulded by the flow of the water.
Amedeo can be installed on both sides, frontal and lateral, and
is characterized by a strong formal identity, almost sculpturesque,
becoming the absolute protagonist of the room where it is placed.
Amedeo’s exclusive design also allows to use the basin as a standalone
element, round or oval, without the column: in this way it can
be wall-mounted or half built-in, according to the customer’s needs.
The real versatility of the new collection is underlined and pointed out
by the various finishings and colours available for the sink: traditional
ceramic in glossy white and in glossy black; Stone and Antracite,
the exclusive porous and matt surfaces by Cielo.
Moreover, the basin will be also available with the preciuos versions
with the textures designed by Karim Rashid.
With Amedeo, Cielo renews its partnership with Karim Rashid, who
had already signed the company’s exclusive collection of Tatoo handdecorated
shower trays, asking the New York designer to concentrate
on shape, innovation and functionality of an industrial product for
the bathroom; an elegant and essential design that goes well beyond
graphics and decoration.
A product 100% Made in Italy, distinguished by the utmost attention
to detail, hand-finished and made with top quality materials; the
perfect testimony of Ceramica Cielo’s philosophy of combining
research on new forms and materials with a high-tech background
permitting the creation of new formal and functional solutions.

in modo nuovo e originale.
europeo o castagno scuro, bianco opaco o grigio basalto opaco,
Matteo Thun’s new Onto series offers an original new version of the
sink area. The ceramic no longer rests on the countertop, but round
or square sinks serve as a support for the countertop, the front
of which is folded and rounded downwards to create an arc covering
the ceramic.
Wood plays a key role in the bathroom along with ceramics:
countertops, cabinet doors and drawers in columns, wall-mounted
bases and sink bases are all made of plywood.
The wood’s sandwich structure is visible on the edges, accentuating
the material’s natural attraction. At the same time, layers glued onto
one another prevent deformation, making them perfect for damp
environments such as the bathroom. The edges are impregnated with
oil; an oily wax emulsion saturates the wood fibres so they cannot
absorb water. This makes Onto furniture perfect for the bathroom,
not only aesthetically, but functionally too.
Counters of variable sizes can have towel holder openings
on the front panel or the counter surface. Mirrors with lighting
and wall-mounted bases complete the range. With a view to satisfying
the needs of the hotel sector as well, a shelf has been created with
drawers and an upholstered cushion, a comfortable seat to install
under the sink. A column completes the series for hotel and home
bathrooms. The column-shaped sink base is an unusual element, with
a round basin perfect for public and semi-public bathrooms. The series
includes a total of 16 different items of furniture to add character and
colour to the room. Whether it’s european oak or dark chestnut, matt
white or matt basalt grey, each of the four finishes in the series acts
as a unifying element: tubs can be covered with the same colour
to create a single harmonious look in the whole bathroom.

è accentuata dalla luce che conferisce all’oggetto e all’ambiente
(cascata, getti frontali, doccetta a mano).
Fantini’s ability to design and create innovative new products of great
formal and emotional value is best expressed in Acquapura, a shower
column available in self standing or built-in versions designed by
Franco Sargiani. The project, awarded by the honourable mention
in the selection of the Award Compasso d’Oro Adi, is the result of the
synergy between the designer and Fantini to create innovative products
for the water handling.
The self standing version is formally a true item of furniture, the value
and personality of which is underlined by the light that gives the
object and the space around it an unusual atmosphere. Acquapura
is an architectural component, a basic three-dimensional solid
element, a monolith, a backdrop for definition of a water space. It’s a
multipurpose volume capable of giving off vital energy, surrounding us
and involving us, generating emotions: a presence designed to offer
a high level of psycho-physical wellness. The tall cascade showerhead
is a pleasant, natural element. In the panel version, Acquapura
is a vertical plane floating on light, out of which come horizontal jets
of water; to minimise external dimensions, it is designed as
a semi-built-in wall-mounted shower. A shower, IMQ approved, panel
530mm wide and 1790mm high is detached from the wall by 36mm
to leave room for Led lighting around its edges, at the top of which
is a backlit waterfall. On the surface of the panel are 378 frontal
jets, a thermostatic mixer, a handle for controlling the intensity of the
flow of water and six backlit buttons for choosing functions (waterfall,
frontal jets, hand-held showerhead). The commands and controls are
designed to be intuitive. One particularly interesting feature of both
versions is the possibility of choosing, by simply touching buttons on
the panel, one or more of the four sectors containing the frontal jets.

d’arredo completo e rifinito.
Planet è realizzata completamente in ceramica, materiale d’elezione
dell’azienda, lavorata accuratamente attraverso l’esperienza
Innovative design and adaptability sum up the features of the new
elements in the Planet series designed by Massimiliano Braconi.
Already included in the Scarabeo product range, the collection
is now enriched with new sinks completing one of the company’s
aesthetically youngest, most versatile yet simplest lines.
The embracing form of the various elements, soft, compact lines and
elegant design of the collection characterise it as part of a complete,
finished furnishing project.
Planet is made entirely out of ceramic, the company’s preferred
material, drawing on Scarabeo’s experience in workmanship to
obtain a finished product with particularly clean, ergonomic forms.
In addition to new sinks of different sizes and styles, the collection
includes self standing and wall-mounted toilets and bidets.
The quality of the porcelain manufacturing renders a final product
with very clean and ergonomic shapes, recalling the compact look
of vintage containers. Traditional manufacturing is combined with
innovative technological and industrial processes, along with the
ability to interpret new trends, to create 250,000 pieces every year
that blend functionality and design for the bathroom; meant
as a space dedicated to everyone’s relaxation and well-being.
Planet is one of the new products presented at Cersaie 2011,
all distinguished by the company’s research and innovation.
Other new products include Wish, an elegant original furniture line
by studio Talocci, and Moai, also designed by Massimiliano Braconi,
characterised by minimal, harmonious lines.

Come sottolinea Monia Marzano:
In pursuit of simplicity, reality and concreteness, of essential beauty,
with a design concept combining practicality with expressive rigour,
Start is a new collection of bathroom fixtures designed for Valdama
by Monia Marzano, who describes her “poetics of simplicity”:
“As I see it, it consists of the encounter between memory and the
contemporary, coming together harmoniously in forms characterised
by simple flowing lines. Forms inspired by the path of water flowing
unhindered. Forms enhanced by the interaction of light with water
as it slips toward the sinuous opening”.
As is normally the case, the collection is a result of the designer’s
ideas and creativity meeting the company’s technical and productive
skill and commercial goals. As Monia Marzano says: “The designer
is a mediator who puts rational elements and the desire to give
physical form to beauty and practicality in relation with one another”.
Knowledge of the company’s expertise is once again an essential
prerogative for coming up with a good design. As the designer
puts it: “The most important thing for a designer is knowledge of
the company’s technical and productive capabilities, its commercial
strategies, its history and values. This is why I spent a lot of time in the
company. This allowed me to experience Valdama’s productive knowhow
for myself, looking at and touching its products.
Once I truly understood the advanced degree of finishing that the
company can give to its products, I came up with a collection based
on the concept of simplicity”.
Knowledge of technique, creativity and a good idea to start with:
Start, a short, quick name summing up the idea of a process that has
started and is destined to continue in the future.

Mister, Hi-line e molti altri.
A collection of ceramic bathroom fixtures which is both classic
and modern at the same time: Flat, designed by Meneghello Paolelli
Associati, is a new series characterised by a surface (4.5 centimetres
thick) on which the tub is delicately modelled. A very obvious edge
(which also characterises the accessories in the series) divides the
sink and the toilet in two: the upper part with the basin and the lower
part, a base or column which gradually thins out towards the ground.
The basin thus becomes a sort of fluid depression, like an elastic
membrane to which a force is applied, pressing it downwards.
The result is a harmonious, elegant whole which is very natural, with
a rigid form (the edge) and a soft curve (the tub and the column).
The Flat collection includes a freestanding toilet and bidet, wallmounted
toilet and bidet, and a toilet in a single block; wall-mounted,
freestanding sink, with a column or semi-column; wall-mounted or builtin
consoles and consoles with ceramic legs. The series is available
in white and two-tone versions (black and white). The collection is the
fruit of the company’s longstanding collaboration with Meneghello
Paolelli Associates and confirms its vocation for offering products with
a strong identity such as the Miss, Mister, Hi-Line, and many other
collections.
Made entirely in Italy in the Civita Castellana plant, the Flat collection
is associated (as are all of the Hidra collections) with an established
production know-how and the highest quality standards, along with
the ability to develop and execute its designers’ ideas through
an engineering process that always begins with a deep knowledge
of the materials used, creating the best possible product and
capitalizing on its technical and esthetic qualities.

design Brian Sironi
Cow è una nuova linea di sanitari
e lavabi diversa da tutte le altre,
caratterizzata da quattro piedi
di appoggio. La primaria fonte
d’ispirazione è il mondo neoclassico
in cui le gambe del mobile sono
l’elemento caratterizzante.
I sanitari Cow assumono una struttura
ibrida tra sospeso e a terra, una
forma ammiccante e giocosa dalle
linee morbide che ricordano
la sagoma di una mucca.
Cow is a new collection of bathroom
fittings and sinks, different from
all the others, characterized by
a four-legs structure. The main source
of inspiration is the neoclassical style,
according to which the furniture
legs are the distinguishing element.
Cow bathroom fittings have a hybrid
structure, between wall-mounted
and freestanding, an alluring and
playful shape with smooth rounded
lines resembling the outline of a cow.
Con la sua linea flessuosa
e semplicissima (un tubo Ø36mm
che dal lavabo disegna una
S verso l’alto), Virgo richiama il flusso
dell’acqua, l’ansa di un fiume,
o il connubio femminile-acquatico.
Tre i modelli proposti: miscelatore
monocomando per lavabo,
miscelatore monocomando per bidet
e miscelatore a parete per vasca.
With its simple flexing line
(a Ø36mm pipe forming an S rising
upward from the sink), Virgo recalls
the flow of water, a bend in a river,
or the femininity of the sea. Three
models are available: a mixer with
a single control for the sink, a mixer
with two controls for the bidet and
a wall-mounted mixer for the bathtub.
tagina
in ogni progetto, in ogni collezione, racchiusa in ogni piastrella ceramica.
“Our strong point is that we never forget where we come from, keeping tradition
alive while continuing to update our techniques, materials and productive
processes.” So says Mario Moriconi, Managing Director of Tagina Ceramiche
d’Arte, as he takes us on a tour of his company’s plants, describing its features
and secrets to us and getting carried away as he digresses about Giotto and
Steve Jobs, discussing everything from the great restoration project of the Assisi
frescoes to new iPad applications. That’s what “his” company is like, capable
of making special handmade pieces in complex shapes or integrating a new
press into his plant to make tiles 20mm thick or the new 80x80cm tiles presented
at Cersaie. Surrounded by the splendid hills of Umbria, with strong local roots,
his company has a unique history of dedication, culture and respect for materials
which is apparent in all its projects, in all its collections, in every one of its
all’eccellenza, la ricerca dell’innovazione tecnologica in ogni fase
all’interno dell’azienda, nel rispetto scrupoloso dell’ambiente,
della sostenibilità, delle normative tecniche internazionali. Proprio
tradizionale, dall’altro a indagare nuovi e sofisticati linguaggi o,
come vedremo in seguito, possibilità di impiego all’apparenza
argilloso allo stato liquido o semiliquido, all’interno dello stampo in
Lo stampo (realizzato su modello all’interno dell’azienda) deve
costantemente). I pezzi perfettamente asciutti vengono poi inseriti
che arriva in stabilimento e viene caricata tramite tramogge all’interno

e legno.
Con Wire Out definita dall’AD di Tagina Mario Moriconi “la
piastrella all’aria aperta”, l’azienda propone una soluzione ideale
estetiche e caratteristiche prestazionali.
dall’architettura, definendo così nuovi campi segnici e funzional.
moderna, e applicata a forme e dimensioni mai sperimentate prima.
The heritage of a great local tradition, continual striving for
excellence, striving for technological innovation at all stages in the
productive process: not just Made in Italy, but “Made in Tagina”,
the slogan the company has coined to underline the key features
of a project which was created, developed and given concrete form
entirely in-house, with scrupulous respect for the environment,
for sustainability, and for international technical standards.
The optimal combination of corporate know-how with sophisticated
latest generation plants brings the productive process to a level of
efficiency that is apparent in the high quality of all Tagina Ceramiche
fields of application, from homes to public spaces, from retail
to wellness.
A vast and highly varied product range, a series of collections
enamelled ceramics while studying sophisticated new forms
of expression or, as we will see below, new potential for application
in areas left to other materials for too long.
To do this it is essential to be perfectly familiar with all the markets,
especially the emerging new markets, and their specific dynamics,
in order to provide them with the most appropriate solutions, respond
to consumers’ technical requirements and tastes, anticipate possible
requests and have an impact on trends.
In Tagina’s laboratories, the fulcrum of the company’s research and
experimentation, advanced technological processes such as those
used for developing porcelain stoneware mixtures survive side by side
with top craftsmanship, skilful use of traditional earths, mastery of the
decorative arts, ancient “cast” and “third fire” ceramic techniques,
and the company’s dialogue and collaboration with design
professionals.
The company's traditional heart is the part of the plant where the
age-old casting technique is used. A magical place with a timeless
atmosphere, where the skill of the workers makes all the difference
in obtaining manufactures of unspoiled beauty, in which human
skill, know-how passed down over the generations and the precious
individuality of hand craftsmanship are best expressed. This is where
the company makes its special pieces, requiring the utmost manual
control to continually verify and correct parameters and timing at
different stages in the process: from casting of the slip, a clayey
compound in a liquid or semi-liquid state, in the specially shaped
plaster mould to determination of the amount of time for which the
mixture hardens in the mould, which must take into account a number
of parameters including temperature and humidity conditions.
The mould (made in-house on the basis of a model) must always be
damp enough to allow the material to adhere to its walls, but not too
damp, as excess humidity can cause uneven or insufficient absorption.
Plaster absorbs humidity from the slip, which is thereby “attached”
to the walls of the mould and stratified to form a thickness which
varies on the basis of the features of the piece, while the rest (the
central part, which is still liquid) is poured out and reused.
Once the mould has been opened (normally after a couple of hours),
the piece, which is empty on the inside and therefore lighter, is left
to dry at room temperature for a few days in order to eliminate the
small amount of moisture it still contains before being fired. At this
stage, the craftsman’s direct control is crucial to check for any cracks,
abnormal thicknesses, or excessive and unexpected tension which
might undermine the solidity of the piece and cause it to break during
firing. During drying it is also important to pay careful attention to
the shrinkage of the material, which leads to a significant reduction
in the size of the piece (already calculated when planning the matrix
and the mould, and kept constantly under control). The perfectly dry
pieces are then placed in the furnace, where they are fired for about
eight hours with a temperature curve peaking at 1080°C, followed
by a ten-hour cooling cycle which cools the pieces to a temperature
of 100°C, after which they are removed from the furnace. After
completion of firing, and possibly a second and even a third firing,
depending on the type of piece, all items may be sent on for painting
and enamelling. Complex pieces come out of the “laboratory”
(shelves, corner pieces, legs for bathroom fixtures…) along with
inimitable relief decorations and special pieces for some of the
company’s contemporary collections that make Tagina tiles unique
on the industrial ceramics market. Other features and priorities, but
the same painstaking attention to detail at all stages in the process,
may be found in the most technologically advanced and innovative
part of the company, where advanced industrial technologies are
used to produce porcelain stoneware tiles that conform to the latest
international standards, offering outstanding technical performance.
“Wire System è una collezione
capace di cambiare
camaleonticamente pelle al prodotto
in relazione al contatto con lo
spazio” Simone Micheli.
“Wire System is a collection that can
change its skin in contact with space,
like a chameleon” Simone Micheli.
It all starts with “atomised” clay, which comes to the plant and
is loaded on hoppers into the silos where it is divided by type and
features to provide a reservoir of raw materials, enough to supply
the plant for a few days. The atomised clay, to which powdered
colours and other elements (quartz, zinc…) are added on the basis
of established “recipes” and quantities, are mixed in cylinders
containing iron balls to ensure the homogeneity of the composition.
Significantly increased investment in research and technological
innovation has permitted activation of sophisticated high-tech towers
feeding high tonnage presses, with vertical batching systems that
permit mixing and grinding of clays and colouring of dry powders.
Damp pressing makes it possible to “bind” the tile, which comes out
in the form of a sheet and is then sent on to the next phase: drying
in a vertical kiln. The tiles come out of the kiln on belts which take
them to the surface treatment lines. The decoration of the tile, defining
its aesthetic image, may be obtained by photo-colouring (rollers in
which ink is transferred to the surface of the tile by contact), vertical
printers (with rollers activated at different times and positions to obtain
the desired effect) or digital printers (making it possible to reproduce
any kind of image and ensuring greater versatility depending on
the required quantities). The last and perhaps most delicate stage is
firing in the traditional inline kiln, in which the tiles remain for about
70 minutes. When they come out of the kiln they are left to cool and
prepared for automatic wrapping, preceded by double quality control
(automatic, to ensure flatness and right angles on the surfaces, and
manual, by a qualified operator, to check finish and colour).
Tagina has been paying a lot of attention to its presses recently,
introducing new machines that allow, for instance, creation of the
special compact tiles in the Wire Out collection, which are only 20mm
thick. This innovative project was developed by the company
in collaboration with Simone Micheli, and will be the key feature
of the company’s stand at Cersaie 2011.
The company has been focusing on the evolution of this collection,
already presented last year, concentrating its efforts on tiles for
outdoor use: an application offering plenty of opportunities, but also
“difficult ground”, which was for years the exclusive prerogative
of stones, marbles and wood.
With Wire Out, which Tagina Managing Director Mario Moriconi
calls “the open air tile”, the company offers the ideal solution
for all kinds of outdoor applications, as well as offering designers
an important opportunity to create a continuous surface maintaining
the same aesthetic value and performance indoors and outdoors.
Wire System is a ceramic project or system capable of generating
continuous, fluid architectures that animate spaces and make them
highly sensorial, functional and unique. It is a versatile product,
perfect for domestic spaces, wellness areas and spas, homes, hotels
and the contract industry.
Wire Out, available in six colours, has a rough finish that gives the
surface a natural look, making it very similar to that of a stone tile.
The collection has evolved over the years thanks to the company’s
strong commitment to technological research, which has allowed
it to offer four different types of application: from gluing (traditional
laying) to raised floating floors with polypropylene supports, and from
simply resting on gravel or sand to installation on grass.
“The project developed with Tagina,” says Simone Micheli, “is not
just a product but a system that sets itself the primary goal of bringing
new light into and outside the building, defining new symbolic
and functional fields. I imagined I was designing a series of threedimensional
stories, focusing on the idea of coming up with a perfect
system for contemporary man, offering an effective response in terms
of both appearance and performance for an increasingly demanding
global market”.
Wire, available in thicknesses of 12 and 20mm, is completed with
several special pieces, curved or straight corner pieces, run-off
channels with and without holes, curbs and elements for constructing
platforms to contain and maintain greenery.
The high-tech special pieces are made using the age-old casting
technique, reinterpreted in a modern light and applied to new forms
and dimensions. Once again, the most advanced new collections
draw upon the past, the most innovative new projects rely on historical
memory, and the most advanced industrial production cannot do
without the ancient flavour and culture of tradition.

City in a box
Paolo Giardiello
Città in scatola
Molto spesso una certa letteratura, comunemente
definita “fantascienza”, ha così crudamente
osservato i comportamenti e i desideri dell‘uomo,
incentrato proprio sulle dinamiche sociali scatenate
comuni o pubbliche e, l‘idea sociale rispondente
compagini sociali.
A certain kind of literature,
usually defined as “science
fiction”, has very often
observed human conduct and
desires so crudely as to profile
it with the greatest truthfulness
and the least cultural and
moral justification. With the
pretext of looking at the future,
the great authors of the genre
have described their present,
its vices and ambitions and,
without any rhetoric, they
have tried to imagine the
possible consequences of
the most intimate desires and
aspirations of their society.
Sometimes with a touch of
catastrophism, and free of all
utopianism – even if this may
appear contradictory – they
have used the image of the
future as a cutting judgment
on trends that already exist in
their society. It is futile to verify
their premonitions after the
fact, as their aim has been to
understand the contemporary
reality, even if through a
deforming and fantasizing
mirror, to warn against
possible futures rather than to
suggest them.
This is why it is impossible,
in relation to the theme of
this issue of area, not to
recall one of the most famous
stories of J. G. Ballard 1 that
centres precisely on the social
dynamics triggered within an
innovative condominium, part
of an ambitious project aimed
at the development of a city 2 .
A skyscraper like the one in
the novel is not just a “great”
architecture, an example
of structural, distributive,
linguistic and stylistic solutions
characteristic of a large
building; on the contrary, it is
the true framework that unites,
and separates, a complex
fragment of humanity. Such a
building does not take the form
of just any tower; it is a true
social pyramid, well defined in
its relations and hierarchies, in
its services and opportunities.
A condominium 3 is therefore
a complex aggregation of
private properties connected
by shared or public parts, and
the social idea that meets these
requirements is one of sharing
rather than of intimacy. Such
a building, regardless of its
size, location or morphology,
puts the needs and hopes
of distinct individuals into
contact; dynamics comparable
to those of a whole city
develop within it, triggering
relations, and sometimes
also conflicts, characteristic
of certain social unities. As
the urban form is determined
by bonds of association and
public assistance, hierarchic
expression of private life and
collective needs, likewise a
condominium stages a smaller
version of the same relations,
even if on an architectural
scale. Residential buildings
housing several families are,
when they are not a banal
aggregation of apartments
without any significant form
but an intensive exploitation
of space, the expression of an
idea of community, organized
around itineraries and spaces
that represent its very reason
for existing; an example
of the relationship that is
established between private
life and public participation,
between privacy and sharing,
between independence and
responsibility.
With respect to the city, large
residential blocks have played
different roles over time that
may be exemplified in two
principal modes: either as
parts of a whole, components
of a connective tissue where
individuals participate chorally;
or as individualities with a
strong character, inserted in
a territory characterized by
relations rather than by plots.
Le Corbusier’s Unité
d'Habitation 4 , is an example
of the latter category; in fact,
these buildings are not merely

3. La parola condominio
etimologicamente deriva
dal latino con – insieme
e dominium – dominio.
Il condominio è quindi il
“diritto di dominio” da
esercitare o esercitato
insieme ad altri. È evidente
quindi che la somma
di indentità si traduce
naturalmente in una forma
di controllo o addirittura di
dominio delle libertà altrui.
4. Le Corbusier sperimenta
la sua idea di Unité
d'Habitation attraverso varie
realizzazioni, leggermente
diverse tra loro, nell'arco di
sedici anni: 1946 Marsiglia,
1952 Nantes – Rezé, 1957
Briey en Forêt, 1957 Meaux,
1957 Berlino, 1962 Firminy.
5. La Ville Radieuse (1933)
è per Le Corbusier la città di
domani, dove sarà ristabilito
il rapporto uomo-natura!
6. Gli Archigram pubblicano
nel 1961 una brochure con
cui diffondono le loro idee. I
principali membri del gruppo
sono stati Peter Cook,
Warren Chalk,
Ron Herron, Mike Webb
e David Greene.
7. Vedi in particolare
i progetti: Plug-in-City, Peter
Cook, 1964; The Walking
City, Ron Herron, 1964;
Instant City,
Ron Herron, 1970.
associativi e assistenziali, espressione gerarchica
a spazi che ne rappresentano la ragione stessa;
dove le singolarità partecipano in maniera corale;
dello spazio urbano, così come storicamente
complex and multifunctional,
but part of an innovative
idea of anthropized space,
enunciated since the project of
the Ville Radieuse 5 , where the
dissolution of the urban space,
as it has been historically
conceived, is not accomplished
through a cancellation of
human relations, but rather
through the destruction of the
consolidated bonds between
density and distribution,
between form of the territory
and dimension of architecture.
Analogously, the ideas of
Archigram 6 , precisely on
the basis of the relationship
between single dwelling unit
and its possible aggregations,
seek to suggest completely
new urban forms, equally
unusual as they are sometimes
“unstable”, based on
substantial and not formal
social relations, on existential
relations and convergences
that are also capable of
offering a new idea of public
space, a new expressive form
of community 7 .
This is why no twisting
of theories is required to
recognize, in the compositive
scheme of a system of
aggregation of housing units,
not just the solution to the
needs of individuals but also
the realization of an idea
capable of giving form to
a “togetherness”, of giving
new meaning to sharing the
environment in which one lives.
3. The word condominium
derives etymologically from
Latin con – together and dominium
– dominion. The condominium
is therefore a “right
of dominion” to exercise or
that is exercised together with
others. It is therefore evident
that the sum of identity is
naturally translated in a form
of control, or even dominion,
on the freedom of others.
4. Le Corbusier experimented
his idea of Unité d'Habitation
through various realizations,
slightly different from one
another, over a period of
sixteen years: 1946 Marseilles,
1952 Nantes – Rezé,
1957 Briey en Forêt, 1957
Meaux, 1957 Berlin, 1962
Radieuse (1933) is the city
of tomorrow, where the relationship
between Man and
nature will be re-established!
6. In 1961 the Archigram
group published a brochure,
announcing their ideas. The
main members were Peter
Participation makes Man
play an active role in relation
to the causes determining
the transition between
city and domestic space,
between exterior and interior,
between a public way of life
and the building of one’s
private. A relationship made
of compromises with the
surroundings that analyzes and
defines the flows of stimuli and
contacts, tracing the inviolable
border of intimacy.
Efficiency, not understood as
efficiency of performance, is
the need to integrate individual
primary needs with others of
a collective kind. It is therefore
the possibility to contaminate
intimacy with measured and
focused relations, aimed
at creating a network of
connections and exchanges,
not yet completely public,
but nevertheless no longer
exclusively private. These
requirements are characteristic
of present-day life, in which
some actions are not due or
obligatory but “chosen”, and
serve to realize a personal
lifestyle.
Finally freedom, understood
as ability to suggest and not
to impose, avoiding to resolve
in a stable form, instead
allowing for infinite degrees
of discovery and invention
in the fruition of spaces, in
the way to use the interiors,
choose the itineraries, in
the characterization of the
environments and in the
flexibility of the components it
is made of.
To do so, there is no need for
projections into the future, for
imagining the unimaginable; it
is only necessary to restore its
historical task to architecture,
namely that of giving form,
critically, to the dreams of
Man.
come belvederi, i porticati come stoá, significa
e scambi, a volte immateriali, comunque disgregati
ampia riflessione sui legami e sulle dinamiche propri
dallo spazio privato dell‘ambiente circostante
To see corridors as internal
streets, halls and landings as
squares, terraces as lookouts,
porches as stoá, means to
try to elevate the distributive
elements of an architecture to
significant parts of a public
living. In fact, the presentday
city is not only the
planned one; it has become
a complex system of relations
and exchanges, sometimes
intangible, in any case
disintegrated and diffused,
incapable of being expressed
in precise form and language.
This is why the contemporary
instability of borders, as well
as of pertinent and absolute
definitions, makes it possible
for the project of a single
architecture to trigger an
ampler reflection on the bonds
and dynamics characterizing
present-day society.
Finally, we may synthetically
identify a number of
characteristics useful for the
definition of these buildings:
repetitiveness, identity,
perception, participation,
efficiency, freedom.
Repetitiveness is a
negative characteristic
when it represents a banal
interpretation of a plan,
repeated without any criterion
but a functional one that makes
Man feel ill at ease and unable
to understand the places where
he lives. On the contrary, it
becomes positive when it is
understood as extension of the
principles of domesticity, of the
value of the private sphere of
the whole aggregate, when
one is in other words able to
avoid formal replication in
favour of a multiplication of
contents.
Perception is a value that must
be seen in the dual aspect
of “interior” and “exterior”.
The legibility of the interior
implies the recognisability, the
identity, of one’s own habitat in
addition to communication of
what one is. Perception of the
surroundings from one’s private
space entails, on the contrary,
a hierarchy of significances
aimed at filtering and guiding
an understanding of the world.

spazi commerciali e tre vie d‘accesso. Anche se
il numero di appartamenti avrebbe giustificato la
presenza di due accessi separati, abbiamo preferito
creare un varco unico, grande abbastanza da
giustapporsi alle dimensioni dell‘edificio. L‘ingresso
susseguono elevandosi in altezza e trasformando
il pianerottolo in uno spazio compresso. Queste
transizioni dimensionali vengono unificate grazie ad
un soffitto di colore verde completamente illuminato
da un sistema di lampade sporgenti. L‘edificio
all‘impiego di pannelli in policarbonato a celle
in sei diverse combinazioni.
esterne dell‘edificio. Le posizioni che assumono
vanno a modificare la percezione del volume.
Da chiuse, sembrano fondersi completamente in
un continuum monolitico che dà continuità alle
fasce verticali.
volume verde soprastante in continua trasformazione.
i lati dell‘edificio. I ballatoi leggeri in acciaio zincato
attraversano lo spazio vuoto interno e ottimizzano lo
spazio verticale di accesso a ciascun piano. I soffitti
ascensori. Dal punto di vista strutturale, abbiamo
adottato una soluzione mista. Il corpo principale
dell‘edificio è realizzato in cemento armato, mentre

The project consists of the
construction of 22 apartments
in a building plot in the old
city centre of Fiesole, in the
area referred to as the former
slaughterhouse.
The new building complex is
a single elongated building
subdivided in three blocks,
staggered in plan and
elevation; the result is a
building characterized by a
complex form softened by its
irregular development.
The building has three floors
above ground and one
basement housing parking
spaces; the facades are
finished with civil plasterwork
mixed with terracotta colours,
while the inclined roof is
covered with Tuscan-style
earthenware tiles.
Gran bazar
text by Antonello Boschi, Andrea Bulleri
“Bisognava vederla soltanto l’anno passato colle
fangosissime d’inverno, polverosissime d’estate,
non invitanti alberghi; priva di servizi pubblici;
mutato fisionomia e sta assumendo gradualmente
l’aspetto di una città. Larghe, spaziose strade, luce
elettrica, alberghi, caffè; ogni giorno cade una
vecchia stamberga ed è rimpiazzata da moderne
costruzioni; ogni giorno s’apre una nuova arteria,
qualche negozio, s’alzano Ministeri, Legazioni,
testimonianza d’inizio secolo sembra fotografare
europea maggiormente cresciuta nell’ultimo
ventennio, capace di triplicare la sua estensione
urbana e passare dai 200.000 abitanti del 1985
agli 800.000 attuali.
“One only had to see it a year
ago, with its low little houses
with verandas, built from unfired
bricks and mud, scattered inside
leafy gardens on the vast plain;
with a few bad roads, horribly
paved, terribly muddy in winter
and just as dusty in summer,
badly lit with oil lamps, with
far-between travellers equipped
with lanterns, with very modest
and anything but inviting hotels,
lacking in public services; […]
In the course of just one year the
capital has changed completely,
and it is gradually beginning to
look like a city. Large, spacious
streets, electric light, hotels,
cafes. A hovel falls every day,
to be replaced by modern
constructions; new thoroughfares
and shops are opened daily;
ministries, legations, barracks
and hospitals are built; gardens
are created, and the old bazaar
(which should in my opinion
remain as it is to give the city a
characteristic touch) vaunts an
ever-greater selection of goods
[…]. A year counts for ten here” 1 .
Tirana, a kind of place where
time is replicated: the testimonial
of the early years of the century
seems to reflect a ruthless image
of a young city, founded in
the Seventeenth century by
Suleiman Pasha – an unusual
contamination of scattered
dwellings, scarce density and
complete absence of regulations
– that only became a capital
in 1920, thanks to a political
compromise. A state without
identity, soon absorbed within
the Italian orbit and concretized
in Roman travertine on the basis
of the new rationalistic vision.
After the long Communist winter,
the intense economic growth has
resulted in widespread real estate
speculation, almost as if to close
the historical circle of a qytet
without rules.
A year still counts for ten, in the
European capital that has grown
fastest in the last twenty years,
tripling its urban extension and
increasing its population from
200,000 inhabitants in 1985 to
the current figure of 800,000.
In this vital and uncontrolled
testing ground Tirana has proven
its ability to introduce changes,
through the chromatic outbursts of
its mayor Rama, and the visions
introduced by the international
competition. A virtual city made
of large icons and a different
structural system, capable of
superimposing itself on the
placed with detachment, has
been outlined with considerable
