The ‘Clean Green Day’ is probably one of
the ‘oldest’ local authority initiatives to
raise awareness and involve townspeople
in the tutelage and protection of the environment.
The event was in fact inaugurated
over 10 years ago by the Region of
Lombardy. On a spring day chosen each
year by the Region, participating municipalities
involve individual citizens and
associations in voluntary activities such
as clearing up rubbish resulting from flytipping,
and the maintenance and restoration
of council park areas and woodlands.
The Provincial Councillor for Ecology
Paolo Mascetti points out that over the
years unsolicited participation has grown
constantly, added proof of increased environmental
awareness on the part of local
authorities who view ‘Clean Green Day’
not only as an occasion for local area regeneration,
but also as a way to encourage
concrete voluntary action on the part
of townsfolk who generally respond with
great enthusiasm.
Recent editions have seen the participation
of more than 80 municipalities and
have even crossed the boarder; starting
last year the ‘Comunità di Lavoro Regio
Insubrica’ jointly with the Province of
Como organised an Italo-Swiss edition of
the event involving various local authorities
in Ticino.
