<strong>Annotated</strong> <strong>checklist</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>polychaete</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arabian Seas 9<br />

Fig. 1: Map <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area investigated showing <strong>the</strong> seas surrounding <strong>the</strong> Arabian Peninsula.<br />

The area treated in this paper comprises <strong>the</strong> following marine regions (see Fig. 1), listed in<br />

anticlockwise direction around <strong>the</strong> Arabian Peninsula: (1) The Suez Canal. Taking account <strong>of</strong><br />

Lessepsian migration (POR 1978), it seems legitimate to include records from <strong>the</strong> Suez Canal<br />

within this <strong>checklist</strong>, as its fauna is <strong>of</strong> predominantly Red Sea ra<strong>the</strong>r than Mediterranean origin.<br />

The Suez Canal thus represents <strong>the</strong> north-westernmost part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole Arabian marine region.<br />

(2) The Red Sea with its two nor<strong>the</strong>rn branches, <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> Suez and <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> Aqaba. (3) The<br />

Gulf <strong>of</strong> Aden, representing <strong>the</strong> connection between <strong>the</strong> Red Sea and <strong>the</strong> Indian Ocean. (4) The<br />

Arabian Sea, <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rnmost part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian Ocean between <strong>the</strong> south coast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arabian<br />

Peninsula and <strong>the</strong> Indian subcontinent. (5) The Gulf <strong>of</strong> Oman, connecting <strong>the</strong> Indian Ocean with<br />

<strong>the</strong> shallow Arabian Gulf. (6) The Arabian Gulf itself.
