Cover storyThe new basesin the world26After the end of the Cold War space bases lostmost of their military strategic importancein favour of the new peaceful competition inspace. Spaceports, cosmodromes, launch facilitiesare the new all-important assets in this field,as documented by the world-wide aerospazio.infodatabase created by the Italian C. M. Sodi, Eng.In the Pacific Ocean the Reagan Test Site is a dualbase for missile testing and NASA space missions. Inthe same area the mobile sea platform Ocean Odysseyis owned jointly by Norway, Russia, Ukraine andUSA private firms and managed by Boeing. In Alashathe state owned structure at Kodiak is operated bythe Alaska State Aerospace Corp. On the US WestCoast we find the Vandenberg military aerospacebase founded in 1941. With its 400sq kms, it is essentialto strategic missiles developing and testing. On the East Coast the Wallops Flight Facility, Va., isoperated by the Goddard Space Flight Center anddevote mostly to scientific missions. In Florida theJohn F. Kennedy Space Center is world famous forhistoric space programs such as Apollo and SpaceShuttle; the center exploits the nearby Cape CanaveralAir Force Station facilities.Among the Western powers, next comes ESA, theEuropean Space Agency, with its launchiung site atKourou, in the French Guyana, fast growing to a fullEurope’s spaceport dimension. Its location almost onthe Equator offers to launchers the slingshot effectimplementing take-off speed. In Middle East there isthe Isfraeli Palmachin military base testing the antimissileArrows while Iran inaugurated in 2008 its ownbase, named Semnan, used to launch the Omid satellite. While Iran new base at Semnan is mostly usedto test war missiles, USSR heirs in Russia still manageone of the world’s largest base systems comprenhending:the Plesetsk cosmodrome, one of themost secret bases until 1966, the historic Baykonour, where Sputnik 1 and Yuri Gagarin took off for theirrespective epoch making flights, the new Svobodnycosmodrome (1996) plus two other bases, Kapustin-Yar and Yasny Dombarovsky. China is fairly active inthe last decades: satellites are launched from the Jiuquanbase in the Gobi desert. There the first chinesesatellite Dong Fang Hopng 1 took off in 1970, andlately the more important Shenzhou manned missions. The second important base is Taiyuan.India is preparing its first manned mission in theSatish Dhawan space center on an Island off theAndhra Pradesh State. Japan’s main base in onTanegashima Island where satellites are assembled, tested and launched. The first JAXA satellite, Osumi, was launched here in 1970, paving the way to manyscientific missions. Last but not least comes Italy, playing its role as a fully qualified satellite launchingcountry from the ESA base in Kourou, where VEGAtook off on its historical flight on Feb.13, 2012 □China launched a remote sensing satellite from TaiyuanSatellite Launch Center on December 22, 2011 marking amilestone in China’s space programgramma di ricerca prevedeva il lancio di satelliti italiani convettori americani Scout, insieme alla costruzione di un poligonodi lancio ubicato al largo delle coste keniote, nei pressidi Malindi.
