(1996) where also a completebibliography to each species is given. Comments to speciesdescribed or recorded after 1996, citations referring to new establishedgenera, synonymies and replacing names, are given below(3–20).Balearic Islands. Little is known about the gall midge fauna ofthese islands. Investigations directed to recognize the compositionof gall midge fauna of the greatest of these islands, the Mallorca,was carried out in 1997 by Skuhravá and Skuhravý (in press).Canary Islands. Rübsaamen (1902) and Frey (1936) wanted tocontribute to the knowledge but their effort remained withoutresults of knowledge on a species level. Rübsaamen (1902) describedseveral galls without determined the causer and Frey (1936)identified several gall midges only to the genus level. Only threegall midge species are known to occur in Canary Islands, viz.Baldratia suaedae Möhn, 1969, larvae of which cause galls onSuaeda vera Gmelin (= S. fruticosa auctorum) (Chenopodiaceae),Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani, 1847), larvae of which arezoophagous on various species of aphids (Carnero Hernandes etal., 1999), and Asphondylia conglomerata Stefani, 1900, parasitoidsof which were given by Graham & Gijswijt (1998).Azores. Nothing is known about the gall midge fauna of thisarchipelago.Madeira. Several galls attributed to gall midges were found byTavares (1903, 1905, 1914) and Rübsaamen (1902). Their causerwere not determined to the species level. At present only two gallmidge species are known from Madeira. Frey (1949) gives the onlyone species, Lestremia cinerea Macquart, 1826, and Juli Pujaderecently found galls of Macrodiplosis dryobia (F. Löw, 1877) onleaves of Quercus sp. Extensive material of gall midge adultsobtained by various methods were gathered by Dr. Dora Pombo,Madeira University, Funchal. This material has not been identificated.Many new taxa both on genus and species levels may beexpected.Andorra. Galls of gall midge species collected in Andorra byJ. Pujade in the course of 1995 and several previous years wereincluded in the paper of Skuhravá et al. (1996).Number of gall midge species in Europe, Palaearctic regionand world (Table 4) has been actually counted and all speciesdescribed up to the date 31 December, 2000, as far as it waspossible to find data in scattered and sometimes difficulty accessiblejournals, are included in these numbers.1 Ametrodiplosis auripes (F. Löw, 1888)Spain: Barcelona: Malla, 1.5.1937, ex Galium parisiense(Vilarrúbia leg), (Bellido & Pujade–Villar data). New recordfor Spain.2 Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani, 1847)Carnero Hernandes et al. (1999) observed larvaeof this speciesas one of natural enemies of aphids which occur in CanaryIslands.3 Arthrocnodax vitis Rübsaamen, 1895R. Ocete found larvae of A. vitis preying on eriophyid mitesColomerue vitis (Pagenstecher) on leaves of Vitis viniferasilvestris at Sierra de Grazalema (province Cádiz) and Sierrade Las Nieves (province of Malága), 6.12.1994. First record toSpain.4 Asphondylia rosmarini Kieffer, 1896Galls caused by this species on leaves of Rosmarinus officinalisL. (Lamiaceae) were found by J. Blasco–Zumeta at thelocality La Retuerta, 1st October, 1998. It is first record forSpain.5 Bayeriola Gagné, 1991Gagné (1991) established a new name Bayeriola for BayeriaRübsaamen, 1914, preoccupied by Fritsch 1905 for Pisces.6 Dasineura axillaris (Kieffer, 1896)Spain: Barcelona: Balenyà 27.7.1937, ex Trifolium sp.(Vilarrubia leg, col & det), (Bellido & Pujade–Villar data).New record for Spain.7 Dasineura zimmermanni (Tavares, 1902)Balearic Islands: Es Grau, S’Albufera, 24.5.1998, gall onErica multiflora, D. Bellido leg., det. y col. New record forBalearic Islands.

Blasco–Zumeta discovered galls on twigs of Juniperusthurifera in Los Monegros in 1991 caused by an undescribedgall midge species. The causer was described as Etsuhoathuriferae by Skuhravá (1996).9 Harmandiola Skuhravá, 1997Skuhravá (1997) established a new name Harmandiola forHarmandia Kieffer, 1896, preoccupied by Rochebrune, 1892,for Mollusca.10 Lasioptera ariasis Skuhravá et García, in litt.New gall midge species damaging fruits of Prunus cerasusdiscovered in the Valle del Jerte in the province Cáceres(Extremadura) in 1995.11 Macrodiplosis dryobia (F. Löw, 1877)Madeira: 8.9.2001, gall on Quercus sp. (Pujade–Villar data).New records for Madeira.12 Putoniella pruni (Kaltenbach, 1872)Spain: Barcelona: Hostalets de Balenyà, 4.7.1937, ex. Prunusspinosa (Fusté leg. and Vilarrubia col.); Malla, 12.7. 1937, ex.Prunus spinosa (Vilarrúbia leg. and col), (Bellido & Pujade–Villardata). New record for Spain.13 Rabdophaga Westwood, 1840Stelter (1993) gave synonyms of several gall midge species ofthis genus larvae of which are associated with various speciesof Salix where their larvae cause galls of specific shape.14 Rhopalomyia hypogaea (F. Löw, 1885)Spain: Barcelona: Balenyà, 29.7.1937, ex Leucanthemumvulgare (Vilarrúbia leg. y col.), (Bellido & Pujade–Villardata). New record for Spain.15 Spurgia Gagné, 1900Gagné (1990) established a new genus for gall midge speciespreviously interpreted under the genus Bayeria Rübsaamen,1914.16 Xerephedromyia ustjurtensis Fedotova, 1992Galls on Ephedra distachya (Ephedraceae) were found by J.Blasco–Zumeta in Los Monegros (6358) firstly in 1995 andthen in subsequent years. He was successful in rearing adultswhich are identical with adults described from Kazakhstan(Middle Asia) by Fedotova in 1992 (Fedotova, 2000).17 Gongromastix angustipennis (Strobl, 1904)Jaschhof (1998) synonymized Gongromastix andorranaEnderlein, 1936 with Gongromastix angustipennis (Strobl).18 Neurolyga fenestralis Rondani, 1840Jaschhof (1998) removed from synonymy the genus NeurolygaRondani, 1840, with type–species N. fenestralis Rondani,1840 and synonymized Campylomyza rudis Winnertz, 1870,and C. fuscinervis Winnertz, 1870, with N. fenestralis.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe first author would like to express thanks to Javier Blasco–Zumetafor his kindness that he called me for collaboration onhis large project to establish the protection of Los Monegros in thepreparing phase of which he collected galls of gall midges andgathered extensive material of adults of various insect groupsincluding large number of gall midges.
