Carles-Tolrá Hjorth-Andersen (coord.)REMARKSThe following remarks are given to facilitate knowledge of thespecies distribution.1 Greniera fabri Doby & DavidFirst record of the species in the Iberian Peninsula in Crosskey& Howard (1997). Rare species; identified in Ciudad Realprovince (Crosskey & Crosskey, 2000).2 Prosimulium aculeatum RivosecchiThe species is reported only from Majorca (Crosskey, 1991a).3 Prosimulium faurei Bernard, Grenier & Bailly–ChoumaraSpecies reported in southern Spain by Crosskey & Crosskey(2000). Previous records report the species as Prosimulium(Urosimulium sp.) (in González Peña et al., 1986), as P. juncii, error for juccii (in González, 1990) and as P. aculeatum –gr.sp. (González, 1997).4 Prosimulium hirtipes (Fries) (complex)Records of Grenier & Bertrand (1954) from southern Spain areconsidered to have been incorrect identifications (= latimucro). The species is reported in rivers born in the Pyrenees(including Andorra) and associated tributaries in Spain(González, 1980, 1981 a–b, 1990; Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau,1993).5 Prosimulium latimucro (Enderlein)According to Crosskey & Crosskey (2000) this species isreferred to in the following Spain records: Grenier & Bertrand(1954) as hirtipes, Grenier & Dorier (1959) as hirtipes,Carlsson (1969) as rufipes and inflatum and Beaucournu–Saguez(1975a) as Prosimulium sp.6 Prosimulium rufipes (Meigen)Records from Sierra Nevada (Carlsson, 1969) are not valid andrefer to P. latimucro.7 Simulium azorense CarlssonAccording to Crosskey (1986) this is the only blackflyinhabiting the Azores islands.8 Simulium guimari BeckerEndemic species in the Canary Island, occurring in the islandsof Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma (Crosskey, 1988);also reported in La Gomera (new data).9 Simulium petricolum (Rivosecchi)According Crosskey & Crosskey (2000) this species isincluded in the Spain records from Grenier & Bertrand (1954,as aureum, in part), Beaucournu–Saguez (1975b as latizonum)and González Peña (1985, as latizonum).10 Simulium tenerificum CrosskeyEndemic species in the Canary Islands occurring in Tenerife(Crosskey, 1988) and La Gomera (new data).11 Simulium velutinum (Santos Abréu)Probably referred to as S. aureum in old references. Reportedas aureum s.l. and rubzovianun in Beaucournu–Saguez (1975aand 1972). See Crosskey (1988) for Canary Islands references.12 Simulium latipes (Meigen)The identification of the species is based on one specimen(larva with pupal gills developed) from the Adaja river (Avilaprovince) (González, 1990,1997). Even though the larval andgill morphology is definitively clear, the presence of thisspecies in the Iberian Peninsula should be confirmed.13 Simulium angustitarse (Lundström)In Spain, this species is reported from Andalusia as Simulium(Nevermannia) sp. in González (1990) (Crosskey & Crosskey,2000). Grácio (1985) has recorded this species from Portugalbut verification is needed because of the likelihood that thisrecord relates at least partly to S. lundstromi.14 Simulium armoricanum Doby & DavidPart of the material identified by Carlsson (1969) as Eusimuliumlatipes is S. armoricanum (Crosskey & Crosskey, 2000).15 Simulium bertrandi Grenier & DorierGrenier (1953) reported the species as Simulium sp. IV. Thespecies is only from the Pyrenees (including Andorra).16 Simulium brevidens (Rubtsov)Reported from the Pyrenees (González 1990, Vinçon &Clergue–Gazeau, 1993) and from the Sierra de la Demanda(Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).17 Simulium carpathicum (Knoz)This species is included in the Pyrenean blackflies inventory(Clergue, 1991) and reported in rivers near Andorra (Vinçon& Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).18 Simulium carthusiense (Grenier & Dorier)Reported as Simulium sp. in Grenier & Bertrand (1954).
