Rare species; identified in Ciudad Realprovince (Crosskey & Crosskey, 2000).2 Prosimulium aculeatum RivosecchiThe species is reported only from Majorca (Crosskey, 1991a).3 Prosimulium faurei Bernard, Grenier & Bailly–ChoumaraSpecies reported in southern Spain by Crosskey & Crosskey(2000). Previous records report the species as Prosimulium(Urosimulium sp.) (in González Peña et al., 1986), as P. juncii,error for juccii (in González, 1990) <strong>and</strong> as P. aculeatum –gr.sp. (González, 1997).4 Prosimulium hirtipes (Fries) (complex)Records of Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong> (1954) from southern Spain areconsidered to have been incorrect identifications (= latimucro).The species is reported in rivers born in the Pyrenees(including Andorra) <strong>and</strong> associated tributaries in Spain(González, 1980, 1981 a–b, 1990; Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau,1993).5 Prosimulium latimucro (Enderlein)According to Crosskey & Crosskey (2000) this species isreferred to in the following Spain records: Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong>(1954) as hirtipes, Grenier & Dorier (1959) as hirtipes,Carlsson (1969) as rufipes <strong>and</strong> inflatum <strong>and</strong> Beaucournu–Saguez(1975a) as Prosimulium sp.6 Prosimulium rufipes (Meigen)Records from Sierra Nevada (Carlsson, 1969) are not valid <strong>and</strong>refer to P. latimucro.7 Simulium azorense CarlssonAccording to Crosskey (1986) this is the only blackflyinhabiting the Azores isl<strong>and</strong>s.8 Simulium guimari BeckerEndemic species in the Canary Isl<strong>and</strong>, occurring in the isl<strong>and</strong>sof Tenerife, Gran Canaria <strong>and</strong> La Palma (Crosskey, 1988);also reported in La Gomera (new data).9 Simulium petricolum (Rivosecchi)According Crosskey & Crosskey (2000) this species isincluded in the Spain records from Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong> (1954,as aureum, in part), Beaucournu–Saguez (1975b as latizonum)<strong>and</strong> González Peña (1985, as latizonum).10 Simulium tenerificum CrosskeyEndemic species in the Canary Isl<strong>and</strong>s occurring in Tenerife(Crosskey, 1988) <strong>and</strong> La Gomera (new data).11 Simulium velutinum (Santos Abréu)Probably referred to as S. aureum in old references. Reportedas aureum s.l. <strong>and</strong> rubzovianun in Beaucournu–Saguez (1975a<strong>and</strong> 1972). See Crosskey (1988) for Canary Isl<strong>and</strong>s references.12 Simulium latipes (Meigen)The identification of the species is based on one specimen(larva with pupal gills developed) from the Adaja river (Avilaprovince) (González, 1990,1997). Even though the larval <strong>and</strong>gill morphology is definitively clear, the presence of thisspecies in the Iberian Peninsula should be confirmed.13 Simulium angustitarse (Lundström)In Spain, this species is reported from Andalusia as Simulium(Nevermannia) sp. in González (1990) (Crosskey & Crosskey,2000). Grácio (1985) has recorded this species from Portugalbut verification is needed because of the likelihood that thisrecord relates at least partly to S. lundstromi.14 Simulium armoricanum Doby & DavidPart of the material identified by Carlsson (1969) as Eusimuliumlatipes is S. armoricanum (Crosskey & Crosskey, 2000).15 Simulium bertr<strong>and</strong>i Grenier & DorierGrenier (1953) reported the species as Simulium sp. IV. Thespecies is only from the Pyrenees (including Andorra).16 Simulium brevidens (Rubtsov)Reported from the Pyrenees (González 1990, Vinçon &Clergue–Gazeau, 1993) <strong>and</strong> from the Sierra de la Dem<strong>and</strong>a(Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).17 Simulium carpathicum (Knoz)This species is included in the Pyrenean blackflies inventory(Clergue, 1991) <strong>and</strong> reported in rivers near Andorra (Vinçon& Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).18 Simulium carthusiense (Grenier & Dorier)Reported as Simulium sp. in Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong> (1954). Partof the material identified by Carlsson (1969) as Eusimuliumlatipes corresponds to this species (Crosskey & Crosskey,2000).19 Simulium costatum FriederichsThis species is reported only from the Dem<strong>and</strong>a <strong>and</strong> Guadarramamountains (Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).20 Simulium cryophilum (Rubtsov) (complex)The species is named as latipes in Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong> (1954)<strong>and</strong> Grenier & Dorier (1959), by misidentification.21 Simulium lundstromi (Enderlein)This species is named as S. angustitarse in González (1990<strong>and</strong> 1997) <strong>and</strong> Grácio (1985).22 Simulium naturale DaviesThe species is reported only from Galicia (Beaucournu–Saguez, 1975b) <strong>and</strong> Portugal (Grácio, 1985b).23 Simulium pinhaoi Santos Gracio, 1985Endemic species from Portugal.24 Simulium quasidecolletum CrosskeyReported as carthusiense f. truncata in González (1990) fromPyrenean headwaters.25 Simulium auricoma MeigenDistribution restricted to northern areas of Spain (Pyrenees<strong>and</strong> Picos de Europa (Beaucournu–Saguez, 1975b) <strong>and</strong>Portugal (Grácio, 1985b).26 Simulium galloprovinciale GiudicelliRare species restricted, in Spain, to Guadalquivir riverheadwaters area.27 Simulium ibericum Crosskey & Santos GrácioEndemic species from the Iberian Peninsula. It was describedwith material from northern Portugal <strong>and</strong> western Spain(Cáceres Province).28 Simulium lamachi Doby & DavidThis species was reported at a single locality in Granada(Spain) (Clergue–Gazeau <strong>and</strong> Vinçon, 1990 <strong>and</strong> Vinçon <strong>and</strong>Clergue–Gazeau, 1993).29 Simulium paraloutetense CrosskeyThe species was described from adult material collected in1931 in Gran Canaria. The aquatic stages have now beenfound at a single site in Gran Canaria <strong>and</strong> this endemicCanarian species described in detail (Crosskey et al., 1998).30 Simulium argenteostriatum StroblIn the Iberian Peninsula, this species is restricted to thePyrenean range.31 Simulium bezzii (Corti)Reported in previous references as Tetisimulium or Simulium(Tetisimulium) bezzii. Presence in the Balearic isl<strong>and</strong>s (Majorca,in González, 1990) has not been confirmed.32 Simulium hispaniola Grenier & Bertr<strong>and</strong>Northern area of the Iberian Peninsula.33 Simulium intermedium RoubaudSee taxonomy <strong>and</strong> distribution in the Iberian Peninsulacomments in Crosskey & Crosskey (2000).34 Simulium maximum (Knoz)This species is reported by Vinçon & Clergue–Gazeau (1993)
