little jewel is that piece of Tuscany tourists love
most; partly for its history, partly for its nearly
immortal charm, partly thanks to its geographical
position envied all the world round. And it
is right from here, amongst the vineyards, wheat
fields, a superb, traditional cuisine and local
wine that you can plunge into an atmosphere
that is simple but rich in culture.
San Gimignano still holds its civic structure and
14th century architecture intact and it is one of
the best European examples of urban organization
of the commune era.
Decorated and crowned by the 12 towers which
dominate the Val d’Elsa landscape, the city has
a fascinating past to tell. Right since the middle
of the 14th century, San Gimignano was an important
customs stop to/from Pisa and Florence
and the citizens had the job to carry out customs
control along the Arno. A trading and cultural
crossroad, this hamlet was a relay point for the
pilgrims coming from the Cisa, crossing the area
of Lucca and Val d’Elsa to reach Siena following
the nearby Via Francigena. Originally of Etruscan
foundation and subsequently Roman, in
mente mancare. Immersa nelle magnifiche colline
