Come ci si sente a guidare queste moto così
particolari?
«La moto americana, e in particolare la Harley Davidson,
è la vera moto. Non è come le moto giapponesi o
europee. Non è una questione di velocità, io non corro.
È il fatto di sentire le vibrazioni nel manubrio, sentire
il motore, maneggiare il cambio...è un insieme di
aspetti che caratterizzano la moto, com’era fatta una
volta. Adesso anche le Harley sono cambiate, ma ne
tengo ancora due o tre vecchie con le quali vado a fare
qualche giro con gli amici. La vera moto è quella col
carburatore, che hanno smesso di produrre nel ‘98: ci si
possono mettere le mani, il rumore è diverso. Da là mi
sono poi avvicinato al country, quella musica vecchia,
contadina degli americani che ha continuato sempre
ad appassionarmi. Io ho sempre lavorato, coltivando
la forma di libertà che queste passioni e stile di vita
possono dare».
Quanto del Paolo Alessi motociclista si riflette sul
Paolo Alessi imprenditore?
«Io da 55 anni sono in fabbrica. Ho cominciato con mio
fratello quando avevo 14 anni. Oggi ne ho 69 e sono
ancora qua. Mi è sempre piaciuto non tanto il lavoro
come lavoro, perché altrimenti avrei cercato altre strade
ma il partire e inventare qualcosa, avere fantasia. E la
fantasia uno dove la mette? Sia nella vita lavorativa che

‘American motorbikes and Harley Davidsons in
particular, are real motorbikes. They’re not like Japanese
or European motorbikes. It’s not a matter of speed.
I don’t go fast. It’s a matter of feeling the handlebars
vibrate, hearing the engine, handling the gears... it’s
many things, it’s motorbikes as they used to be. Harleys
have changed now too but I’ve still got two or three old
ones I go out with my friends on. Real motorbikes have
carburettors, which they stopped making in 1998. You
can get hold of them, the noise they make is different.
That’s how I was introduced to country and western
music, that old American farming music which I still love.
I’ve always worked, cultivating the sort of freedom that
these passions and lifestyles can give you.’
How much of Paolo Alessi the biker is there in Paolo
Alessi the entrepreneur?
‘I’ve been in the factory for 55 years. I started with my
brother when I was 14. Now I’m 69 and I’m still here.
What I’ve always loved is less work for its own sake,
because otherwise I’d have sought out other paths,
than the starting out and inventing things, being
creative. And what do we do with our creativity? Put it
into both our working and private lives. I’ve always been
a bit of an eccentric. I’ve never gone over the top but
nella vita privata. Sono sempre stato un po’ eccentrico.
Non è che abbia mai ecceduto su queste cose ma sono
molto fantasioso in effetti. Me lo dicono anche i miei
figli. A volte mi vengono fatte anche osservazioni per il
mio modo di vestirmi, di comportarmi. Ma tutto questo
fa parte dell’indole di una persona. Di ciò che sono».
Lei, sia in azienda che nella vita fuori dall’azienda, si
sente un po’ un “Easy Rider”?
«Senza sottovalutare gli altri, mi sento un po’ “fuori”
dagli altri. Senza essere il “ganassa”, lo sbruffone di
turno. Alcuni scopi nella vita li ho diversi. Non sono un
materialista. Mi sono sempre piaciuti i motori, ho avuto
la fortuna di poterli vivere e la fantasia di coltivare le
mie passioni senza mai dare peso al fatto di possedere
questi mezzi. È sempre stata una cosa che sentivo
dentro. Quello che ti senti di fare, lo fai senza fatica.
Una persona, alla fine, si esprime in queste cose.
Perché l’essere umano si esprime nei suoi difetti, nei
suoi pregi e nei suoi sogni. E ognuno racchiude nella
sua scatoletta l’essere individuale che è».

People sometimes comment on the way I dress, the way
I behave. But all this is a matter of personality. Of what
I am.’
At the firm and in your life outside it, do you feel a
bit “Easy Rider”?
‘Without underestimating other people, I feel a bit of
an ‘outsider’. Without being a big talker, the loudmouth
of the moment. I’ve always had various goals in life. I’m
not a materialist. I’ve always liked motorbikes, I’ve been
lucky enough to be able to own them and the creativity
to cultivate my passions without giving too much weight
to the ownership side. It’s something I’ve always felt
inside. If you’re doing what feels right it’s not hard work.
Ultimately we express ourselves in this way. Because
human beings express themselves in their vices, virtues
and dreams. Each one of us has the individual we are
closed up in our boxes.’
