during the war time were also known as “the red sisters”. Women who during the war acquired<br />
the nursing specialty were called sanitary sisters. The First World War showed, however, that<br />
not each woman could be a sister of charity, since there were also persons who lived merely<br />
for their own good lacking the sense of duty.<br />
After the restoration of Latvia’s independence, the Russian Red Cross Society united the Russian<br />
Sisters of Mercy and continued to take care of those who formerly belonged to the various<br />
former Russian Red Cross communities offering job and organising Latvian language courses.<br />
