This describes how the new dictionary (new definitions and new explanations)
were made on the basis of Latvian common language dictionaries and
the Oxford’s dictionary in English as well. It was stated that explanations of
the same word or term in different dictionaries (and languages) differ. for
solving discrepancies the main attention ought to be paid to finding the essential
characteristic features of the concept before formulating the definition.
Theoretical conclusions are made analysing the terms word, word stock,
language unit, language system, language level, sentence, utterance, text and
their definitions. The model for the analysis of a sentence on four linguistic
levels (syntactic, lexical, morphological and phonetical) is added too.
In the conclusion it is pointed out that a cognitive approach is necessary
for finding scientific answers on the problematic issues.
