In earlier times Leiden was known
for its textile industry, which was
further supplemented by such
diverse branches as the metalworking,
graphics and conserves
industries. From industrial city to
a prominent centre of the Dutch
knowledge economy in the 21st
century; biotechnology, education,
business services, scientific research
and the creative sector now
dominate the employment market
in Leiden. With its universities
(Leiden University and Webster
University), its college and other
educational institutions, Leiden is
now a leading knowledge centre.
Not only regionally and nationally,
but also internationally.
Leiden Bio Science Park
Leiden: life sciences city
Life sciences in Leiden are
concentrated in the Leiden Bio
Science Park. This park is the
largest life sciences knowledge
cluster in the Netherlands, with
some sixty specialist biotech companies
and knowledge institutions.
The park has been in existence
since 1984 and occupies some
110 hectares, an area larger than
Leiden’s city centre.
The park houses biotech companies
of all kinds and sizes: from
start-ups to multinationals,
from companies specialising in
research to production facilities
and suppliers.
Leiden University
Leiden University is an internationally
renowned research-oriented
university. Scholars carry out
scientific research in some thirty
research institutes covering a
diverse range of fields. The Leiden
research institutes frequently form
part of national research schools
that are inter-university partner-
ships. Many Leiden researchers
work closely with other research
institutes, companies and
government organizations both
at home and abroad.
LUMC
The Leiden University Medical
Center (LUMC) is one of the eight
university medical centres in the
Netherlands. The LUMC strives
for continuous improvement in the
quality of healthcare, and aims
to continue to play a leading role
both nationally and internationally.
The LUMC offers specialist treatments
that are only authorised to
be carried out in a limited number
of medical centres.
The LUMC has a tradition of
conducting pioneering medical
and biomedical research, which
gives it a leading position
internationally.
