De strijd ging tussen het VWO 4 en het SPI.
The final battle was between VWO-4 and SPI.
The SPI Family
The SPI team did not lack supporters: teachers, fellow
students, family, and friends, in fact the entire SPI
Family was somehow involved in this talents expo. The
team and their teacher had decided to camp at school
for a whole month. ‘There was barely time between
the shows to prepare for the next performance’, says
Jeneva Campagne, member of the team. ‘We only
went home after the shows, but the following day we
were back together again, and that was fun.’
The teacher’s lounge was their sleeping quarters;
cooking and eating were all done at school. Besides
permanent coaches Patrick Tuinfort and Jane Wekker,
several other teachers, friends and fellow students
came to visit. ‘Their presence, inspiring words, and
surely the sweets and fruits were quite an incentive’,
says a smiling Ifuel Alberg, another member of the
team. The moral support during the shows was excellent.
Fellow students, friends and family flooded the
Nesty Indoor Stadium to cheer their team on.
Special
Originality and creativity are pivotal aspects in the
training of the nearly 1,000 SPI students. For the Got
Talent ? team they therefore needed to find extraordinary,
artistic and very creative performers. ‘We’ve
tried to be very special, presenting the audience with
topics they would never expect’, says Ifuel. ‘Our African
dance on house music, our kumakoisi (traditional
Surinamese restroom), our funeral, that were a few of
our special scenes’, says Jeneva. The performances
caused awe among the audience and the jury alike.
Spending the Prize Money
“We’ll use the money for something that will benefit
both students and teachers’, says Mac Intosh. Last
year’s US$10,000 has not been used yet and the
plans were simply frozen. Now that the prize money
has been doubled SPI has more room to put it to
good use. Both students and teachers have tabled
proposals how to spend the money. One of these was
the construction of a swimming pool and improvement
of the sports facilities. ‘But I think we’ll finally
decide on building a completely equipped training
facility’, says Mac Intosh.
