NOVA – Norwegian Social Research in Brief<br />

NOVA – Norwegian Social Research – is a national research institute under the auspices of the<br />

Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. The National Assembly, Stortinget, provides the<br />

basic funding. The aim of the institute is to develop knowledge and understanding of social conditions<br />

and processes of change. It focuses on issues of life-course events, level of living conditions and<br />

aspects of life-quality as well as on programmes and services provided by the welfare system.<br />

THE STAFF<br />

NOVA has a highly competent and multidisciplinary staff. By the turn of the year the research staff<br />

consisted of 85 researchers. Psychology and sociology are the most common disciplines among the<br />

research staff.<br />

RESEARCH<br />

Within its fields NOVA performs research assignments commissioned by public and private sector clients.<br />

The Institute also initiates research and development projects. NOVA is the leading national research<br />

institute on child welfare, youth, ageing and the elderly, and social security.<br />

NOVA’s key research areas are:<br />

• Welfare of children and youth<br />

• Youth<br />

• Public policy and the financing and living conditions of families<br />

• Quality of life, welfare services and health<br />

• Social security and social policy<br />

• Ageing and the life-course<br />

• Migration<br />

NOVA’s four Strategic Institute Programmes (SIPs) constitute a particular focus on selected areas:<br />

• Welfare services undergoing change<br />

• On the threshold of a multi-cultural society<br />

• Childhood research<br />

• Sources of maintenance in a life-course and generational perspective<br />

COLLABORATION<br />

NOVA aims to maintain and develop cooperation with national research establishments. Training of<br />

research fellows is an important part of the collaboration with Norwegian universities and university<br />

colleges. The Institute encourages its researchers to present papers at international conferences and to<br />

participate in international research projects.<br />
