ABSTRACT
The present dissertation puts on evidence the “botequim” (popular Brazilian
bar) in the urban area of Rio de Janeiro as a special space of sociability and interaction
of its regular costumers. Through ethnographic fieldwork in a specific “botequim” and
using data from a wider survey about botequins in the city of Rio de Janeiro it is
intended to analise problems such as urban integration, masculinity and feminility,
uses of drinking, consumption, and specially the reciprocity of the informal credit system
of the “botequim”, the “pendura”. For this purpose, it was used as methodologic
approach the participant observation.
