Essas
here to give them all the support we can.”
As with jiu-jitsu, the classes are given in the mornings and
afternoons, so students can participate who attend school
in either the morning or afternoon session. The classes are
open to all between 10 and 17 years of age who are regularly
enrolled in school.
Soccer
The project directed by Mário Dias, coordinator of sports
activities for Beija-Flor, unites Brazil’s two greatest national
passions: soccer (or futebol, if you please) and samba. The
roughly 150 students enrolled learn the fundamentals of both
regular soccer and “society” soccer (played on a smaller field
with only 7 players to a side). As Mário puts it: “Here at Beija-
Flor the problem is there are so many activities that I run the
risk the kids will prefer to take jiu-jitsu or table tennis classes
(chuckles). Just joking. We have plenty of kids for all sports
activities. It’s logical that Brazilian culture concentrates on
soccer. Most other sports arrived here more recently. But one
day I’m sure we’ll have greater demand for all sports. The fact
is that today soccer excites the kids’ imaginations the most,
especially because they believe – justifiably so – that soccer is
