Fernando Gabeira
Escritor, jornalista e ex-deputado federal pelo Rio de Janeiro (1998-2010), nascido em
1941, é mineiro de Juiz de Fora e carioca por opção desde 1963. Destacou-se como
jornalista, no Jornal do Brasil, onde trabalhou de 1964 a 1968. No final dos anos 60,
ingressou na luta armada contra a ditadura militar. Foi preso e exilado por dez anos.
Com a anistia, voltou ao Brasil no final de 1979 e dedicou-se a uma intensa produção
literária, construindo as primeiras análises críticas da luta armada e impulsionando no
país temas como as liberdades individuais e a ecologia.
Publicou os livros O que é isso companheiro, O Crepúsculo do macho, Entradas e bandeiras,
Hóspede da utopia, Nós que amávamos tanto a Revolução e Vida Alternativa. Em
1987, cobriu em Goiânia o acidente radioativo com o césio 137 e escreveu seu décimo
livro, Goiânia, Rua 57 – O nuclear na Terra do Sol. Em 1988, lançou o livro Greenpeace:
verde guerrilha da paz, que apresentou ao Brasil a filosofia e os bastidores da maior
organização ecologista do mundo.
Em 1989, foi candidato a presidente da República. Em 1994, elegeu-se deputado federal
e, desde então, tem sido reeleito. É um dos mais influentes deputados do Congresso
Nacional.
Writer, journalist and former federal deputy of Rio de Janeiro (1998-2010), Gabeira was born in 1941, in Juiz de Fora, Minas
Gerais, and selftitled “carioca” since 1963. He distinguished himself as a journalist at Jornal do Brasil, where he worked from
1964 to 1968. By the end of the 1960’s he joined the armed movement against the military dictatorship. He was arrested and
exiled for ten years. Through anisty he came went back to Brazil in the end if 1979 and dedicated himself with intense literary
production, bulding the first critic analysis of the armed movement and bringing to public debate themes such as individual
liberty and ecology.
He has published O que é isso companheiro (What is this camarade), O crepúsculo do macho (The male’s dawn), Entradas e
bandeiras (Entrances and flags), Hóspede da utopia (Utopia’s guest), Nós que amávamos tanto a Revolução (We who loved so
much the Revolution) and Vida Alternativa (Alternative Life). In 1987 he gave journalistic coverage to the radioative accident
in Goiânia, the cesium 137, and wrote his tenth book, Goiânia, Rua 57 – O nuclear na Terra do Sol (Goiânia, 57th street – The
nuclear in the Land of the Sun. In 1988 he released the book Greenpeace: verde guerrilha da paz (Greenpeace, green guerrilla
of peace), which introduced Brazil to the philosophy and the behind-scenes of the biggest ecological organization of the
world.
In 1989, Gabeira ran for the presidential election. In 1994 he was elected federal deputy and since then has been reelected.
He is one of the most influent deputies of the National Congress.
