ABSTRACT
The progressive development of technical, scientific and biological knowledge in
endodontic procedures has provided high success rates. However, this type of
treatment consists of several operative steps that are prone to accidents and
complications during clinical course. Among these complications, we emphasize
the inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia, lingual and mentalis during the
endodontic therapy of the lower posterior teeth. Thus, the aim of this study was
to evaluate through a literature review, the occurrence of paresthesia during the
treatment of root canals, obtained from sources of cataloging bibliographic
identified electronically in MEDLINE and the Cochrane Collaboration. The
search strategy was conducted by the PubMed website
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed) in the period from 2000 to 2010, while
classical studies reference. Starting with the literature reviewed, we can
conclude that the frequency of involvement of these nerves can be minimized
by knowledge of topographic anatomy, nerves involved, a matter of technique
used in endodontic treatment, and better knowledge about the materials used.
Key - words: Paresthesia; endodontic treatment; intraoperative complications.
