PROMONTORIOARCHI – Mas há limites para a cedência...JLF – Mas não há cedência nenhuma. Não estamos a ceder a nada.Respondemos a um programa que às vezes vai evoluindo, até pela própriaconsciência do cliente sobre o que pretende, mas somos nós que o fazemos.Ninguém fala em cedências quando vê uma “Descida da Cruz” de El Greco.Mas, se visse o contrato que dois anos antes da entrega ele assinou, percebiacomo muito do que lá está e a própria disposição das figuras foi uma exigênciada encomenda, além do prazo.ARCHI – Mas há clientes difíceis, que dão imensa luta…JLF – Isso é muito bom quando acontece. Um bom entrevistador faz-nosdizer coisas que provavelmente não tínhamos a intenção de dizer. O arquitetotem de pensar que também tem de ser provocado. O cliente não tem de fazero papel de morto à frente do arquiteto. Não podemos pensar que sabe o quesabemos ou mais do que sabemos; ou que temos de nos subjugar a ele. Nadadisso. Já nos aconteceu dizer: “Eu isso não altero, mas acredite, vai ver que vairesultar…” Esta confiança do cliente só é possível se de facto houver clima ese a relação for leal.PMB – Para muitos arquitetos existe ainda a ideia mítica desse clientechamado Estado, que, como entidade abstrata e inimputável, tudo permitia,e a qualquer preço.ARCHI – Em termos de futuro, quais são as vossas expectativas?PMB – O ateliê em Portugal é uma espécie de centro agregador, masestamos a criar raízes noutros sítios, que vão aumentando por si próprios.O nosso objectivo mais imediato é consolidar a presença em regiões onde jáestamos, principalmente no Médio Oriente, Magreb e África.JLF – Em Moçambique, um cliente disse-me que comparava os arquitetosaos médicos, no sentido que são alguém que gostava de ter próximo, paraconversar, para ajudar a pensar. O arquiteto, na sua função, deseja-setambém uma pessoa próxima, com quem se trava intimidade, em quem seconfia, para aconselhar, para ajudar a avaliar e a analisar, na procura dabeleza, do bem-estar e do conforto.JLF – But there is none. We are not giving in on anything.We respond to a programme that sometimes evolves, even by the customer’sown awareness about what he wants, but we’re the one who design the project.Nobody talks about concessions when they see a “Descent from the Cross” byEl Greco. But, if someone were to see the contract that he had signed two yearsbefore delivery, they would realize that much of what is there and the veryarrangement of the figures was a requirement of the client, in addition to thedeadline.ARCHI – But there are difficult clients. Clients that give an immense fight...JLF – That’s very good when it happens. A good interviewer makes us saythings that probably we didn’t intend to say. The architect has to think thathe must also be provoked. The client doesn’t have to play dead in front of thearchitect. We can’t think that he knows what we know or more than we know;or that we have to subjugate ourselves to him. None of it. We’ve had to say:“I won’t change that, but believe me, you’ll see that it will work...” Thisconfidence of the client is only possible if there is, in fact, a good environmentand if the relationship is loyal.PMB – For many architects there exists also this mythical entity of a client,which is both abstract and untouchable, called “The State”, that allowedeverything at whatever cost.ARCHI – In terms of the future, what are your expectations?PMB – The firm in Portugal is a kind of base that harbours the mainproduction, but we are putting down roots elsewhere, which are growing bythemselves. Our immediate goal is to consolidate the presence in areas wherewe already are, especially the Middle East, Maghreb and Africa.JLF – In Mozambique, a client told us that he compared the architects tomedical doctors, in the sense that they where someone good to have around,to talk, to help you think. The architect, in his metier, is truly a person to bewanted, to be trusted; someone who assesses and advises man’s search ofbeauty, wellbeing and comfort.ArchiNews 24 47
