The competition programme for theOpera House and City Library of theMunicipality aims to celebrate the cityas a unique canvas of the cultural, economic, religions and politicalinteractions across centuries betweenthe east of the Mediterranean, theMiddle East and Europe. With more than 2 hectares andlocated in a major junction of Aleppo’scentre, – between the Great Mosqueand the Fountain Square –, the plothas severe building restrictions. The massing follows almostmechanically the compliance with theplanning constrains and programmerequirements, namely the limitationof the building footprint to 45% ofthe plot. All this lead to a simple andcompact built form.In essence, a rectangular box withinwhich the various functions share thesame hall. A semi-transparent draperyof lace, or wickerwork, envelopsthe “box” behind the structuralfaçade, using an evocative pattern ofAleppo’s historically celebrated motifof pistachio leaves and flower; apattern whose intricate combinationsrecurrently migrate from the traditionof tapestry, ceramics and metal workinto architecture. The idea of lightness andtransparency behind this veiled box isfurther reinforced by the archway thatevolves in a rising sequence touchingthe ground and finally merging withthe dressing theme.Geometrically conceived as astructural grid of squares andcylinders intersected by arches andspherical domes, a vast open-airportico or pronaos, announces theentry to the building. The latter, conveying the ceremonial pathos andsymbolic solemnity in accordance withthe magnitude of this civic structure, isalso spatially reminiscent of ambianceof Aleppo’s Souk, imparting the placea sense of being, rather that justpassing through. The same principle of intersectedarchways follows through into thefoyers in a unified sequence. The whole public space is thereforebased in a three-dimensionalarchitectural grammar of Arab andLevantine influence, such as thetransition from a monochromaticexternal surface in stone, to the whiteconcrete and gold-leafed interiorspace. Inside, the Opera is an alltimeclassic auditorium with stalls, boxes and multi-level balconies, withits bulkheads in an acoustic gold--leafed pattern and a large centralchandelier. The library seats on topof this theatre box, thereby concealingpart of the volume of the stage towerand technical areas, simultaneouslyoffering the opportunity for alandscaped rooftop courtyard.68 ArchiNews 24
